The United States continues to face a mental health crisis. A strong body of evidence supports poor sleep as a significant contributor to the development and exacerbation of mental health conditions. To achieve public health goals, it is critical to understand the associations among sleep health characteristics and mental health in the general population, and how practicing healthy sleep behaviors can promote better mental health across communities. National Sleep Foundation calls for focused actions to promote sleep health and mental health from a wide range of society members. Efforts to inc

Sleep and mental health are closely interconnected. Alterations in sleep patterns are frequent among patients with psychiatric disorders and can exacerbate symptom severity or interfere with treatment outcomes. Despite this, systematic sleep assessment is not consistently integrated into psychiatric practice. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the main questionnaires available to assess sleep and its disturbances in psychiatric populations. We propose a minimal sleep semiology framework that includes non-specific sleep complaints (satisfaction, non-restorative sleep), sleep sympt

The prevalence of sleep problems is high in primary care patients and in anxious individuals. This study assessed whether total sleep time and bedtime procrastination mediated the association between anxiety and sleep problems. We predicted higher anxiety would be negatively associated with total sleep time and positively associated with bedtime procrastination and sleep problems, and these variables would statistically mediate the association between anxiety and sleep problems. Participants were 308 adult primary care patients, predominantly female (non-Hispanic White = 158, Latinx = 111, mea

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disruption is a common complaint among patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Modern technology of activity monitoring (actigraphy) enables extended, objective, unobtrusive recording and measuring of daytime and nighttime activity. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the actigraphic sleep patterns in PTSD compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: We searched through seven electronic databases from inception to July 2022. Only case-control studies comparing rest-activity variables measured by actigraphy devices between clinically diagnosed PTSD patients an
