Problems in cancer screening in the older patient.

If prevention is to become a structured portion of medical care, a complex societal and professional learning process will have to occur in order to change the practice of medicine. Physicians, together with other health professionals, must work to remove the barriers and to determine the social, medical and personal activities necessary to preserve a high quality of life for their patients over a full lifespan. To accomplish this, the physician must not only treat disease but also promote a healthy living environment. With the increasing amounts of valid information available on the effective

Empathy deficits in women with complex trauma following childhood sexual abuse.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) stemming from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is characterized by profound interpersonal difficulties in later life. Despite the crucial role empathy plays in social functioning, the specific deficits in emotional and cognitive empathy in CPTSD remain understudied. This study employs a rich, naturalistic empathy task to investigate empathic responses among women with CPTSD following childhood sexual abuse. Female participants with CPTSD following CSA and female controls viewed autobiographical videos containing emotional pain, while providing dynamic

Development and assessment of a self-management intervention for urinary incontinence among patients with prostate cancer: protocol for a randomized feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common complication among patients with prostate cancer who have undergone radical prostatectomy. Guided by social cognitive theory and a framework for the recovery of health and well-being, we propose to develop and test a self-management intervention for patients with prostate cancer who experience urinary incontinence after undergoing radical prostatectomy. METHODS: In this study, a self-management intervention for urinary incontinence (SMI-UI) is developed, comprising a mobile self-management application, a self-management handbook, and professional s

Correlates of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms among Formerly Incarcerated, Homeless Women.

Posttraumatic stress symptoms are a pressing issue among women experiencing incarceration and homelessness. Baseline data were collected among formerly incarcerated homeless women (N = 130) who were on average 38.9 (SD = 11.36, range 19-64) years of age and recruited into a pilot randomized control trial (RCT) intervention program. A logistic regression was used to assess correlates of PTSD symptoms. The majority of the sample self-reported witnessing violence (85%) and had moderate PTSD symptoms (M = 1.61, SD = 1.62, range: 0-4). No past month drug use (p = 0.006), higher anger scores (p = 0.

Comparative assessment on rodent impacts and cultural perceptions of ecologically based rodent management in 3 Afro-Malagasy farming regions.

Rodents generate negative consequences for smallholder farmers in Africa that directly impact household and livestock damage, food security, and public health. Ecologically Based Rodent Management (EBRM) seeks sustainable solutions for the mitigation of rodent damage through assessments of rodent population dynamics, agro-ecosystems, and socio-cultural contexts. We adopt a comparative approach across 3 rural Afro-Malagasy smallholder farming regions in South Africa, Tanzania, and Madagascar to assess the household impacts of rodent pests and current perceptions and preferences associated with

Assessment of social traits in married couples: Self-reports versus spouse ratings around the interpersonal circumplex.

Personality traits predict the quality of intimate relationships, and as a result can be useful additions to assessments of couple functioning. For traits involving social behavior, the affiliation (i.e., warmth, friendliness vs. hostility, quarrelsomeness) and control (i.e., dominance vs. deference, submissiveness) dimensions of the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) are an alternative to the 5-factor model traits of agreeableness and extraversion, given that they may provide a more specific and relevant description of social behavior in the context of couple functioning. The couple context creat

Altered effective connectivity network of the amygdala in social anxiety disorder: a resting-state FMRI study.

The amygdala is often found to be abnormally recruited in social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients. The question whether amygdala activation is primarily abnormal and affects other brain systems or whether it responds "normally" to an abnormal pattern of information conveyed by other brain structures remained unanswered. To address this question, we investigated a network of effective connectivity associated with the amygdala using Granger causality analysis on resting-state functional MRI data of 22 SAD patients and 21 healthy controls (HC). Implications of abnormal effective connectivity and c

[Reproductive risk factors and sexual history associated with cervical cancer in Mexico].

Uterine cervical cancer is one of the principal public health problems in Mexico. The national mortality rate for cervical cancer in 1991 is estimated at 9.5 per 100,000 women, representing 4,194 deaths. In the period from August 1990 to December 1992, a case-control study was carried out that included 630 cases of histologically confirmed cervical cancer in eight Mexico City hospitals (two for people with no social security cover, four of the social security system and two private). As controls, 1,005 women were chosen from a random sampling of houses in the Mexico City metropolitan area. The

Impact of self-imposed prevention measures and short-term government-imposed social distancing on mitigating and delaying a COVID-19 epidemic: A modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread to nearly every country in the world since it first emerged in China in December 2019. Many countries have implemented social distancing as a measure to "flatten the curve" of the ongoing epidemics. Evaluation of the impact of government-imposed social distancing and of other measures to control further spread of COVID-19 is urgent, especially because of the large societal and economic impact of the former. The aim of this study was to compare the individual and

Social support for women after fistula repair: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula (OF) is a birth complication that largely affects women in developing countries. These women suffer constant incontinence, shame, social segregation, and health problems. Reconstructive surgery can usually repair OF, enabling the women to reintegrate back into their communities. However, pro repair does not necessarily equate with emotional recovery. Our objective was to explore women's experiences of social support after first time OF repair. METHODS: An evidence synthesis was performed based on a systematic search of literature done between January and March 20

Swedish social insurance officers' experiences of difficulties in assessing applications for disability pensions--an interview study.

BACKGROUND: In this study the focus is on social insurance officers judging applications for disability pensions. The number of applications for disability pension increased during the late 1990s, which has resulted in an increasing number of disability pensions in Sweden. A more restrictive attitude towards the clients has however evolved, as societal costs have increased and governmental guidelines now focus on reducing costs. As a consequence, the quantitative and qualitative demands on social insurance officers when handling applications for disability pensions may have increased. The aim

Needle phobia--changing venepuncture practice in ambulatory care.

Needle phobia is a term used in practice to describe an anticipatory fear of needle insertion. A proportion of children display high levels of fear, pain and behavioural distress when exposed to, or anticipating, needle insertion. A difficult routine venepuncture in our ambulatory care unit led staff to review practice and develop a three-step approach to overcoming 'needle phobia': relaxation, control and graded exposure. These developments have resulted in the unit becoming a local referral centre for children and young people between the ages of 5-19 years with this problem. Time and skill

Using Facebook to Improve Participation in Colorectal Cancer Screening: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening participation in Canada is lower than the national target, and interventions designed to increase screening participation are generally expensive and have limited impact. Social media can be used as an innovative strategy to increase participation in cancer screening, particularly Facebook (FB), as it is the most popular social media platform for the population eligible for CRC screening. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to report on the protocol for a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial that will test the effectiveness of CRC social

Health and well-being among 70-year-old migrants living in Sweden--results from the H 70 gerontological and geriatric population studies in Göteborg.

BACKGROUND: Comparative epidemiological studies in migrants in Sweden have shown increased prevalence of psychosocial morbidity in young adults, but there is paucity of information on health in people aged 65 years and over. AIMS: We aim to compare prevalence of mental, physical and social health problems, rates of hospital admission, and mortality in Swedish and non-Swedish born people aged 70 years living in Göteborg, Sweden, and examine associations between social factors, physical health, mood and life satisfaction in the ethnic groups. In addition, we aim to test for the hypothesis that

A longitudinal study on the mental health status of young and middle-aged orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the mental health trajectory and its influencing factors in young and middle-aged orthodontic patients. METHODS: In a longitudinal study, 154 patients were recruited from Nantong Stomatological Hospital (March 2023-October 2024). A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) control cohort was established to balance demographic characteristics. Data on general information, social support (Social Support Rating Scale), and psychological distress (Kessler 10 scale) were collected at eight time points from treatment initiation to 15 months. Mental health trajectories were analyzed

Association between voice-activated technology interventions and well-being in older adults living alone: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of community-dwelling older adults living alone face a range of physical, psychological and social challenges that negatively impact their well-being. Various technologies have been developed to support healthy ageing, with voice-activated technology (VAT) offering particularly promising opportunities to improve later life well-being. However, its effect on older adults living alone has not yet been systematically evaluated. Thus, this study aims to provide an evidence base for the effectiveness of VAT interventions in enhancing the physical, psychological and so

Who do we follow online? An experimental study on source clarity and social proximity in digital health communication.

Public health communication increasingly relies on digital channels where advice is encountered from diverse sources that vary in source clarity (whether the sender is perceived as clearly identifiable) and social proximity (whether the sender is perceived as relationally close). To examine how these sources shape compliance with health advice, we conducted a randomized controlled online experiment (N = 810) simulating a social media environment in which each participant viewed one weight-management post attributed to one of eight sources: parents, friends, colleagues, doctors, health influenc

The role of neighbourhood environments in hospitalization risk for diabetes and related conditions: A population-based cohort analysis by remoteness and deprivation indices.

BACKGROUND: Most socio-epidemiological studies on diabetes incidence, prevalence, or hospitalization focus on individual-level risk factors. This population-based cohort study sought to advance understanding on the associations of contextual characteristics and risk of diabetes-related avoidable hospitalization (DRAH) among at-risk Canadians. DATA AND METHODS: A national cohort was compiled from the 2013/2014 Canadian Community Health Survey, representing 5.1 million adults aged 35 years and older, reporting having been diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease. Their informatio

Abnormal spontaneous neural activity in the medial prefrontal cortex and right superior temporal gyrus correlates with anhedonia severity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUD: Converging evidence indicated the presence of clinically significant anhedonia in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Studying anhedonia and its neural correlates in OCD may be beneficial in understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of OCD. However, the neural mechanisms that underlie anhedonia in OCD still remain unclear. The present study was designed to bridge this research gap by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: 29 OCD patients with anhedonia (OCD-AH), 31 OCD patients with normal hedonia (OCD-NH), and 30 healthy con
