Beyond genes: A systematic review of environmental risk factors in specific reading disorder.

BACKGROUND: While an understanding of the genetic contributions to specific reading disorder (RD) is emerging, there is no agreement about which putative hazard factors are clearly involved in the aetiology of this disorder. AIMS: A literature review looking at the impact of environmental risk variables implicated in RD either per se or when interacting with the genes. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We performed a systematic literature review using the following keywords: dyslexia OR reading disability AND environmental risk factors OR environmental hazard factors, in the following electronic datab

Toward an Understanding of the Role of the Environment in the Development of Early Callous Behavior.

Key to understanding the long-term impact of social inequalities is identifying early behaviors that may signal higher risk for later poor psychosocial outcomes, such as psychopathology. A set of early-emerging characteristics that may signal risk for later externalizing psychopathology is callous-unemotional (CU) behavior. CU behavior predicts severe and chronic trajectories of externalizing behaviors in youth. However, much research on CU behavior has focused on late childhood and adolescence, with little attention paid to early childhood when preventative interventions may be most effective

[Development and neural basis of social behavior].

We have developed a multi variate analysis of social communication behavior which allows for discriminating the emotional state of an agent interacting with other agents (Bouquet method). Domestic chick or common marmoset was reared under socially isolated conditions, later tested for its development of communication behavior with peers by Bouquet, and compared with that of animals reared under grouping conditions. We found the existence of high sensitive period for social interaction, given less experience, developing less affiliated behavior. From chick model, a couple of neuronal difference…

Social integration and social contribution moderate the moral injury-suicidality link among veterans.

Moral injury, arising from perceived violations of deeply held moral beliefs, is a significant risk factor for suicidality among veterans. Consistent with the buffering hypothesis, factors associated with social well-being may attenuate this relationship. This study tested whether two facets of social well-being, specifically social integration (i.e., feeling connected) and social contribution (i.e., believing one's actions matter), combine to moderate the moral injury-suicidality relationship. Using data previously collected from 1469 veterans who participated in the Military Mental Health an

A test of the social withdrawal syndrome hypothesis of bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The study examined the social withdrawal syndrome (SWS) hypothesis of bulimia nervosa (BN). According to the hypothesis, eating disorders such as BN are associated with a coherent set of social withdrawal cognitions, affect, and behavior. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: Eight-eight young female adults completed a standardized measure of bulimic symptoms and measures of social withdrawal (affective withdrawal, trust beliefs in close others, and disclosure). Participants were engaged in a laboratory-based peer interaction which yielded the SWS measure of perceived lack of social connect

Social anxiety and cannabis use: an analysis from ecological momentary assessment.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear especially vulnerable to cannabis-related problems, yet little is known about the antecedents of cannabis-related behaviors among this high-risk population. The present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the relations among social anxiety, cannabis craving, state anxiety, situational variables, and cannabis use in the natural environment during ad-lib cannabis use episodes. Participants were 49 current cannabis users. During the two-week EMA period, social anxiety significantly interacted with cannabis craving to predict

'Living with tics': self-experience of adolescents with Tourette syndrome during peer interaction.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe the essence of the self-experience of adolescents with Tourette syndrome in the context of peer interaction. BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome has an adverse impact on adolescents' physical, psychological and interpersonal interactions. Peers provide adolescents with social interactions that are crucial to the formation of self-identity. Studies exploring the self-experience of adolescents with Tourette syndrome in the context of peer relationships are lacking. DESIGN: A qualitative, phenomenological research design was used. METHODS: A total of 12 adolescents w…

Autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents with fragile X syndrome: within-syndrome differences and age-related changes.

The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) was used to examine diagnostic profiles and age-related changes in autism symptoms for a group of verbal children and adolescents who had fragile X syndrome, with and without autism. After controlling for nonverbal IQ, we found statistically significant between-group differences for lifetime and current autism symptoms for the Communication and Restricted Interests/Repetitive Behaviors domains, but not the Reciprocal Social Interaction domain. Effect sizes for differences in Reciprocal Social Interaction also were smaller than effect sizes for th…

A longitudinal study of active treatment of adaptive skills of individuals with profound mental retardation.

A longitudinal study indicated that a single group of adults living in a large state institution (O'Berry Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina) benefited from receiving active treatment, although no control group was permitted. After five years, 59 individuals with profound mental retardation improved their skills in six general areas of dressing, grooming, eating, toileting, communication, and social interaction. After five more years of active treatment, 51 persons who had remained in the program maintained their skills in dressing, grooming, eating, and communication. Significant improvement…

"I Want to Be Alone, but I Don't Want to Be Lonely": Uncertainty Management Regarding Social Situations among College Students with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (iSAD) experience adverse outcomes in daily life due to the disorder (e.g., lower educational and work achievement compared to their healthy counterparts). They are prone to social isolation, even though they desire intimate interpersonal relationships. Yet, little research on iSAD is devoted to understanding in detail a) when they interpret social situations as social-anxiety-provoking, b) how this interpretation motivates their assessments of their efficacy and likely interaction outcomes, and c) how they choose specific information-seeking strategies

Inorganic Polyphosphate Is Essential for Salmonella Typhimurium Virulence and Survival in Dictyostelium discoideum.

Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) deficiency in enteric bacterial pathogens reduces their ability to invade and establish systemic infections in different hosts. For instance, inactivation of the polyP kinase gene (ppk) encoding the enzyme responsible for polyP biosynthesis reduces invasiveness and intracellular survival of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) in epithelial cells and macrophages in vitro. In addition, the virulence in vivo of a S. Typhimurium Δppk mutant is significantly reduced in a murine infection model. In spite of these observations, the role played by p

Interaction between product strategy selection and the carbon quota allocation policy.

The interaction between the government's carbon reduction policy and a firm's product strategy has not been well studied in the literature. This paper considers the government's two different carbon quota allocation policies for the cap-and-trade scheme and the firm's two product strategies and investigates the interaction between them by establishing a theoretical model and deriving the optimal decisions. This paper first examines the firms' selection of low-carbon products or ordinary product strategies under the government's two carbon quota allocation policies and then studies the governme

Social Comparison as a Moderator of the Relationships Between Romantic Partner Phubbing and Mental Health Among Hispanic Emerging Adults.

Romantic partner phubbing (RPP) is when one ignores their romantic partner in favor of one's smartphone. Although RPP may be related to poorer mental health, less is known whether social comparison moderates this association. The present study investigated how social comparison moderates the associations between RPP and depressive, anxiety, and stress (DAS) symptoms in Hispanic emerging adults. Hispanic emerging adult college students (n = 210) completed a survey assessing demographics, RPP, social comparison, and DAS symptoms. Results indicated a significant interaction between RPP and social

Relationships Between Emotion Regulation, Social Communication and Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The relationship between emotion regulation, social interaction and different types of restricted and repetitive behaviors is poorly understood. In the present study, structural equation modeling based on information about 239 individuals with autism was used to examine whether emotion regulation and social communication were associated with self-injury and stereotyped behaviors. Results showed that poor emotion regulation had a unique association with self-injury while difficulties with social communication was uniquely associated with stereotyped behaviors. Emotion regulation and social comm…

Venom and Social Behavior: The Potential of Using Spiders to Evaluate the Evolution of Sociality under High Risk.

Risks of sociality, including competition and conspecific aggression, are particularly pronounced in venomous invertebrates such as arachnids. Spiders show a wide range of sociality, with differing levels of cannibalism and other types of social aggression. To have the greatest chance of surviving interactions with conspecifics, spiders must learn to assess and respond to risk. One of the major ways risk assessment is studied in spiders is via venom metering, in which spiders choose how much venom to use based on prey and predator characteristics. While venom metering in response to prey acqui

The relationship between social reward behavior and mesolimbic dopamine release.

Deficits in social behavior, such as reduced motivation and social avoidance, are key symptoms in several psychiatric disorders. Distinct mo … sure nucleus accumbens dopamine release. Additional measures included the frequency and duration of social interactions during conditioning sessions. No relationship was found between baseline (pre-cocaine) dopamine and social place preference in either sex. However, in males, social place preference negatively correlated with cocaine-induced phasic dopamine release …

Association of Online Parent-Child Interactions With Depressive Symptoms Among Middle-Aged and Older Empty Nesters in China.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is prevalent among empty nest older adults who do not live with their children. With rapid technological development, online interaction presents a new opportunity to improve older adults' mental health. However, the relationship of online parent-child interaction with depressive symptoms among empty nesters remains under-examined. Guided by the social support theory, this cross-sectional study examined the association between online parent-child interaction and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese empty nesters. METHODS: A total of 5198 Chinese empty

Altered Positive Affect in Clinically Anxious Youth: the Role of Social Context and Anxiety Subtype.

Anxious youth may experience altered positive affect (PA) relative to healthy youth, perhaps because of greater sensitivity to social experi … end. These findings suggest that clinically anxious youth may more sensitive to positive events and social interactions than healthy youth. Findings provide potential treatment targets for anxious youth, including applying regulatory strategies to positive events.

Age, Motor Function, and Cognitive Function Influence Preferences for Telerehabilitation Mediated by a Social Robot Augmented With Telepresence.

Social robot augmented telepresence (SRAT) is a potential approach to provide rehabilitative care to remote patients, while overcoming barriers to physical clinician-patient interaction. This study evaluated the preference of the subjects, stratified by age, motor impairment level and cognitive impairment level, for three modes of rehabilitation care delivery: face-to-face (FTF), classical telepresence (CT), and via social robot-augmented classical telepresence (SRAT). Forty-two participants completed the experiment that included assessments of upper-limb motor function and cognitive function
