Stigma as social comorbidity in epilepsy.

Empirical evidence confirms both the pervasiveness and the significant impact of stigma among people with epilepsy (PWE). Despite being one of the most extensively studied neurological disorders, epilepsy continues to carry a disproportionate social burden across cultures and historical periods. Stigma is not only a psychological consequence but also a chronic social determinant of health that negatively affects quality of life, social participation, and long-term outcomes. Recent research highlights the multidimensional nature of epilepsy-related stigma, including internalized, enacted, and i

Social networks and type 2 diabetes: a narrative review.

It has been known for decades that social networks are causally related to disease and mortality risk. However, this field of research and its potential for implementation into diabetes care is still in its infancy. In this narrative review, we aim to address the state-of-the-art of social network research in type 2 diabetes prevention and care. Despite the diverse nature and heterogeneity of social network assessments, we can draw valuable lessons from the available studies. First, the structural network variable 'living alone' and the functional network variable 'lack of social support' have

Exploring the links between emotional intelligence resilience support and mental health in college students.

This study examines how emotional intelligence (EI) relates to mental health among college students and whether psychological resilience and social support mediate this association. Using purposive and snowball sampling, we collected 706 valid online questionnaires (October-November 2023). Data were analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM) in AMOS 26.0. EI showed significant positive associations with psychological resilience, social support, and mental health; resilience and social support were each positively associated with mental health. Mediation tests (bootstrap, 5,000 resamples)

Obsessions and compulsions: dimensional structure, reliability, convergent and divergent validity of the Padua Inventory.

This study presents data on dimensional structure, reliability, convergent and divergent validity of the Padua Inventory (PI). In a sample (n = 430) of normal Dutch subjects. The dimensional structure and the strength of the factors were comparable to those found in the Italian sample. The reliability of the PI was found to be satisfactory. As hypothesized substantial correlations were found between the PI and related scales of the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) and between the PI and the subscales Sensitivity, Hostility and Depression of the revised version of the Symptom Chec

Effect of social influence on antiviral therapy behavior among chronic hepatitis B patients with different disease knowledge levels.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a global health challenge with low rates of diagnosis and treatment worldwide. Since social factors and individual cognition significantly influence antiviral therapy adherence in CHB patients, both of which are shaped by patients' understanding of hepatitis B, this study aimed to investigate the effects of social influences on antiviral therapy behavior among CHB patients with different levels of disease knowledge. METHODS: From March to October 2023, a survey was conducted among CHB patients in Fuqing City, Fujian Province. A self-designed scale was

Social Media Use and Openness to "Sugar Relationships": Cultural Tightness-Looseness as a Moderator Across 22 Countries.

Social media use has been widely linked to sexual attitudes, yet it remains unclear whether its association with openness to sugar relationships is uniform across countries or contingent on country-level normative contexts. In the present study, we examined whether country-level cultural tightness-looseness moderated the relationship between social media use and openness to sugar relationships across 22 countries. Openness to sugar relationships was conceptualized as a manifestation of a broader orientation toward sexual-economic exchange. Using data from 22,292 adult women drawn from a large

Prematurity insults remodel cerebellar development and behaviour.

Preterm survivors often develop motor and socio-cognitive impairments that implicate altered cerebellar development, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. A key challenge is that prematurity involves overlapping perinatal insults that converge on the developing brain, making their individual effects difficult to disentangle. Here, we model two major prematurity-associated insults, maternal immune activation (MIA) and neonatal hypoxia (Hx), in mice. By controlling timing and sequence, we define how these insults shape cerebellar assembly during rapid maturation. Comparative an

Relative Brain and Brain Part Sizes Provide Only Limited Evidence that Machiavellian Behaviour in Cleaner Wrasse Is Cognitively Demanding.

It is currently widely accepted that the complexity of a species' social life is a major determinant of its brain complexity, as predicted by the social brain hypothesis. However, it remains a challenge to explain what social complexity exactly is and what the best corresponding measures of brain anatomy are. Absolute and relative size of the brain and of the neocortex have often been used as a proxy to predict cognitive performance. Here, we apply the logic of the social brain hypothesis to marine cleaning mutualism involving the genus Labroides. These wrasses remove ectoparasites from 'clien

Early impact of X- and Y-chromosome variations (XXX, XXY, XYY) on social communication and social emotional development in 1-2-year-old children.

Sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) are characterized by an extra X- or Y-chromosome (XXX, XXY, XYY). The present study aims to investigate early signs of social communication and social emotional development in very young children with SCT. Thirty-four children with SCT (aged 12-24 months) were included in this study, as well as 31 age-matched controls. Social communication was measured with structured behavior observations according to the Early Social Communication Scales, and social emotional developmental level with the Bayley Social Emotional parental questionnaire. The role of postdeployment social factors in linking deployment experiences and current posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology among male and female veterans.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The postdeployment social context is likely highly salient in explaining mental health symptoms following deployment. The aim of this study was to examine the role of postdeployment social factors (social support and social reintegration difficulty) in linking deployment-related experiences (warfare exposure, sexual harassment, concerns about relationship disruptions, and deployment social support) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in male and female veterans. DESIGN: A survey was administered to 998 potential participants (after accounting for

Abnormal Social Reward Responses in Anorexia Nervosa: An fMRI Study.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) display impaired social interactions, implicated in the development and prognosis of the disorder. Importantly, social behavior is modulated by reward-based processes, and dysfunctional at-brain-level reward responses have been involved in AN neurobiological models. However, no prior evidence exists of whether these neural alterations would be equally present in social contexts. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional social-judgment functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of 20 restrictive-subtype AN patients and 20 matched healthy controls

Empowering digital public health: a study on the mechanisms by which the application of digital technology drives social entrepreneurial intentions in the health sector among university students.

Amidst the tide of the rapid development of digital public health, digital technology has become a core tool driving university students to address social pain points such as health inequality and engage in social innovation. Based on social innovation theory, this study constructs a multiple mediation model of "digital technology application--digital health practice literacy--psychological capital--social entrepreneurial intention," aiming to explore the internal capability and psychological transmission pathways through which digital technology empowerment influences university students' soc

The Sikkim mouse (Mus pahari) exhibits distinct spatial, circadian, and social behaviors compared to laboratory mice.

While the laboratory mouse is one of the most studied organisms on the planet, comparative research on the spatial and social structures of closely related Mus species remains limited. Here, we characterize the spatial, circadian, and social behavior of the Sikkim mouse (Mus pahari) wild-derived inbred strain PAH/Eij in comparison to the laboratory mouse strain C57BL/6J (Mus musculus domesticus, shortened to 'B6'). Using a common garden approach, we monitored mice in replicate mixed-sex group social behavior trials within an indoor mesocosm using radiofrequency identification (RFID) antennae. …

Are you laughing at me? Neural correlates of social intent attribution to auditory and visual laughter.

Laughter is a multifaceted signal, which can convey social acceptance facilitating social bonding as well as social rejection inflicting social pain. In the current study, we addressed the neural correlates of social intent attribution to auditory or visual laughter within an fMRI study to identify brain areas showing linear increases of activation with social intent ratings. Negative social intent attributions were associated with activation increases within the medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex (mPFC/ACC). Interestingly, negative social intent attributions of auditory laught
