Phosphorus (P) fertilizers promote soil petroleum-hydrocarbon (PHC) bioremediation by correcting carbon-to-P ratio imbalances. While these inputs create conditions favorable to microbial growth, areas of a site or an entire site with low degradation rates (i.e., "stalled") occur for unknown reasons. We hypothesized that soil conditions limit P bioavailability, leading to stalls in PHC bioremediation, and adding the correct P amendment restarts microbial activity. Soils were collected and characterized from four cold calcareous PHC-impacted sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, undergoing bioremediati…

The excessive use of fertilizers can lead to increased production costs, degraded soil quality, diminished product excellence, and environmental contamination. To address this issue, a solution involving soil testing and customizing fertilizer application has been proposed. The current standard methodology for soil parameter assessment relies on chemical analysis performed by trained laboratory technicians, which only allows for the measurement of one indicator at a time. Hence, a novel approach utilizing the fusion of near-infrared (NIR) and Raman dual-spectral features has been suggested to …

The huge amount of urea applied has necessitated best-developed practices to slow down the release of nitrogen (N) fertilizer while minimizing nitrate loss. However, the impact of nitrification inhibitors on mineral-N turnover and the associated microbial mechanisms at different stages remains unknown. A 60-day incubation experiment was conducted with four treatments: no fertilizer (CK), urea (U), urea with copper pyrazole (UC), and urea coated with copper pyrazole (SUC), to evaluate the changes about soil ammonia N ( N H 4 + -N) and nitrate N ( NO 3 - -N) levels as well as in soil microbia…

The significance of soil organic matter (SOM) in environmental contexts, particularly its role in pollutant adsorption, has prompted an increased utilization of molecular simulations to understand microscopic interactions. This study introduces a coarse-grained SOM model, parametrized within the framework of the versatile Martini 3 force field. Utilizing models generated by the Vienna Soil Organic Matter Modeler 2, which constructs humic substance systems from a fragment database, we employed Swarm-CG to parametrize the fragments and subsequently assembled them into macromolecules. Direct Bolt…

The phosphate-modified biochar (BC) immobilizes cadmium (Cd), yet little is known about how phosphate species affect Cd detoxification in contaminated soils. We developed phosphate-modified biochar through the pyrolysis of wheat straw impregnated with three types of phosphate: mono‑potassium phosphate (MKP), dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (DKP), and tripotassium phosphate (TKP). The Cd adsorption mechanism of modified biochar was investigated by biochar characterization, adsorption performance evaluation, and soil incubation tests. The results demonstrated that the efficiency of biochar in imm…

Long-term wastewater irrigation leads to the loss of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the tillage layer of calcareous land, which irreversibly damages the soil's ability to retain cadmium (Cd). In this study, we selected calcareous agricultural soil irrigated with wastewater for over 50 years to examine the recalcification effects of sugar beet factory lime (SBFL) at doses of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. We found that SBFL promoted Cd transformation in the soil from active exchangeable species to more stable carbonate-bonded and residual species, which the X-ray diffraction patterns also confirmed resul…

It is important to ensure the nutritional quality and safe production of rice. Here, plot experiments were used to analyze the effects of three soil amendments-10 t ha-1 of biochar (BC), 1.5 t ha-1 of lime (LM), and 2.25 t ha-1 of silicon-calcium fertilizer (SC)-on the soil characteristics, rice yield and quality of double-cropping rice grown in mildly cadmium-polluted paddy fields. Compared with the control treatment (CK), the BC and SC treatments significantly improved rice processing, appearance and nutritional quality, but reduced cooking quality. All three soil amendments significantly re…

Spintor® (SPIT®) is a commercial formulation of a bioinsecticide with the active ingredient Spinosad (SPIN). Despite the efforts of regulatory agencies, there still is a lack of information regarding short- and long-term exposures to soil-dwellers, as well as effects at environmentally relevant concentrations. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of SPIT® and SPIN, on the oligochaete Eisenia fetida, and the arthropod Folsomia candida. For this, natural soil was spiked with environmentally relevant concentrations (0.00-1.49 mg of the active ingredient·kg-1 of dry soil) to assess avoidance be…

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions can cause air pollution that is harmful to human health, even producing serious ecological problems. Whether it is diluted in the air or not, the management and valorization of NOx from industrial emissions have been constrained by technology and finance. This study shows that red soil can be used as a photocatalyst to convert NOx into soil nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) in the soil. The addition of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) onto the soil surface improves the photocatalytic precipitation efficiency of 1 ppm NO, approaching a removal efficiency of 7…

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal disease affecting humans and other mammals, caused by environmental pathogens of the genus Coccidioides. Understanding the ecological factors that shape the distribution of Coccidioides in soils is important for minimizing the risk of human exposure, though this remains challenging due to the pathogen's highly variable spatial distribution. Here, we examined associations between the soil microbial community and Coccidioides immitis presence within the Carrizo Plain National Monument-a minimally disturbed grassland ecosystem, and the site of a longitudinal study e…

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis remains a notable health problem in developing countries. In 1990 in Shanghai, a city in eastern China, 47% of the population was affected. Due to a series of comprehensive approaches, the prevalence decreased to 0.5% in 2009. We collected 10-year surveillance data to assess the epidemic situation of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in Shanghai. Stool samples and questionnaires from participants were collected. The Kato-Katz technique was used to detect infections with Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), and Tr…

Grassland degradation decreases ecosystem productivity and diminishes soil biodiversity, leading to the loss of beneficial microorganisms. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a critical role in ecosystem functioning, being a key link between plant and microbial communities, soil, and vegetation. Here, we evaluated the potential of increasing the productivity of degraded grassland by AMF inoculation. A gradient of soil biodiversity: complete sterilization, low, moderate, and high biodiversity was established using the dilution-to-extinction approach. Grassland microcosms under greenhouse co…

Soil protists are increasingly studied due to a release from previous methodological constraints and the acknowledgement of their immense diversity and functional importance in ecosystems. However, these studies often lack sufficient depth in knowledge, which is visible in the form of falsely used terms and false- or over-interpreted data with conclusions that cannot be drawn from the data obtained. As we welcome that also non-experts include protists in their still mostly bacterial and/or fungal-focused studies, our aim here is to help avoid some common errors. We provide suggestions for curr…

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a pathogen that causes Aujeszky's disease (AD) in animals, leading to huge economic losses to swine farms. In order to discover anti-PRV compounds, we studied the extracts of the strain Streptomyces jiujiangensis NBERC-24992, which showed significant anti-PRV activity. Eight benzoheterocyclic secondary metabolites, including three new compounds (1-3, virantmycins D-G) and five known compounds (4-8, virantmycin, A-503451 D, A-503451 D acetylate, A-503451 A, and A-503451 B), were isolated from the broth of NBERC-24992. The structures of the new compounds were identifi

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil transmitted helminthiases (STH) have been historically recognized as a major public health problem in Angola. However, lack of reliable, country wide prevalence data on these diseases has been a major hurdle to plan and implement programme actions to target these diseases. This study aimed to characterize SCH and STH prevalence and distribution in Angola.
METHODS: A country wide mapping was conducted in October 2018 (1 province) and from July to December 2019 (14 provinces) in school aged (SAC) children in 15 (of 18) provinces in Angola, using WHO …

Critical to meeting cellular phosphorus (P) demand, soil bacteria deploy a number of strategies to overcome limitation in inorganic P (Pi ) in soils. As a significant contributor to P recycling, soil bacteria secrete extracellular enzymes to degrade organic P (Po ) in soils into the readily bioavailable Pi . In addition, several Po compounds can be transported directly via specific transporters and subsequently enter intracellular metabolic pathways. In this review, we highlight the strategies that soil bacteria employ to recycle Po from the soil environment. We discuss the diversity of extrac…

Successful application of microbial biofertilizers, such as phosphorus (P) solubilizing fungi to agroecosystems, is constrained from the lack of knowledge about their ecology; for example in terms of how they respond to an external input of carbon (C) to get established in the soil. In two soil incubation experiments we examined the performance of the P solubilizing fungus Penicillium aculeatum in non-sterile and semi-sterile (γ-irradiated) soil with different C and P sources. Results from the first experiment with C sources showed that starch and cellulose generally improved P solubilization …

The co-existence of antibiotics and heavy metals in soil with manure application poses high risk to both environment and human health, and thus effective remediation methods are in urgent need. This study investigated the synergistic effects of electrokinetic remediation (EKR) on antibiotic resistance and arsenic (As) in co-contaminated paddy soils. EKR treatments in soil amended with pig manure (EKR-PD) showed better remediation efficiency compared with that without pig manure. In detail, the content of available As and the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) decreased by 25.2 %-…

Soil heavy metal pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China, especially cadmium (Cd), which has the most extensive contaminated soil coverage. Therefore, more economical and efficient remediation methods and measures are needed to control soil Cd contamination. In this study, different amendments (biochar (B), organic fertilizer (F), lime (L)) and actinomycetes (A) inoculants were applied to Cd contaminated farmland to explore their effects on wheat growth. Compared with Control, all treatments except A treatment were able to significantly increase the underground par…

Zoonotic pathogens are among the most important causes of ill health all over the world. The presence of these pathogens in free ranging baboons may have significant implications for humans. In Kenya, the encroachment of wildlife habitats has led to increased interaction between humans and wildlife especially non-human primates. The current study therefore aimed at investigating any possible zoonotic gastrointestinal helminths of olive baboons (Papio anubis) at the human-wildlife interface in two park borders and a ranch in Kenya, namely, Tsavo West National Park, Tana River Primate Reserve an
