Of the single-suture craniosynostoses, unicoronal synostosis (UCS) is widely acknowledged to represent the most varied and complex set of craniofacial deformities. This is attributed to the endocranial base being affected along with the coronal suture. This deformity may present with both coronal and frontosphenoidal synostosis and has been associated with elevated intracranial pressure; brain morphological abnormalities; vertical dystopia; ambylopia; malformations of the forehead, orbit, midface, and mandible; and behavioral, cognitive, and speech abnormalities. It is the variable structural

A two-wall decompression of the orbit, consisting of removal of the medial and lateral walls, was successful in eight patients with thyroid ophthalmopathy. The lateral wall was by removed by using the standard orbitotomy technique in addition to enlarging the space with a pneumatic burr, and the medial wall was removed through a direct medial canthal incision. Two patients had optic neuropathy, one had intermittent subluxation of the globe, and five had symptoms of exposure or increased pressure in the orbital area. In our eight patients, the two with optic neuropathy improved, the patient wit

Eight pregnant Macaca nemestrina were administered from 7.5 to 10 mg/kg retinoic acid by mouth from day 20 to 44 of gestation. All fetuses exhibited craniofacial abnormalities. The craniofacial complex was studied in detail utilizing gross photography, silver nitrate impregnation, radiography, alizarin staining, and histologic processing. Nearly all the bones of the craniofacial complex were affected; the zygomatic bone and the mandible were most severely altered. Premature fusion of the coronal suture occurred in all the specimens, and there was a clockwise rotation of the craniofacial comple

Our aim in this work is to define the importance of anatomical knowledge in septoplasty operation and to prevent complications. Septoplasty is one of the most common operations in otorhinolaryngology to treat the nasal obstruction caused by septal deviation. During and after septoplasty, there are some recorded complications, such as hemorrhage, hematoma, septal abscess, septal perforation, saddle nose, infection, anosmia, visual disturbances, cavernous sinus thrombosis, meningitis, pneumoencephalos, subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural empyma, brain abscess, periorbital emphysema, toxic shock sy

PURPOSE: The treatment of midfacial retrusion, due to congenital midfacial hypoplasia or trauma, is a challenging problem. Conventional Le Fort III osteotomies, with the surgical mobilisation of the entire midface, offers one solution. Distraction osteogenesis has become an accepted, and often preferred, technique for the treatment of severe midfacial hypoplasia. Existing distraction devices have several disadvantages. To overcome some of these disadvantages, an internal and temporal positioned distraction device was developed.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The new, internal positioned distractor dev

It is generally accepted that computed tomography (CT) is superior to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in demonstrating bony erosion while MRI is better in delineating soft tissue abnormality. The ability to detect skull base erosion by CT and MRI was compared in a retrospective study of 114 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Involvement of the following structures was demonstrated on CT and MRI: pterygoid plates [CT--10 (9%) patients, MRI--8 (7%) patients]; pterygoid process [CT--22 (19%) patients, MRI--22 (19%) patients]; clivus [CT--17 (15%) patients, MRI--26 (23%) patients]; pet

Radiocephalometric analysis, based mainly on the foramina of the trigeminal nerve branches, was applied to three samples of adults, two representing fairly extreme profile types, the third representing "normal" dentofacial build. The aim of the study was to find out whether the analytical method could be used to differentiate between facial types. It appeared that some elements of the method had diagnostic powers, and could substitute for traditional methods. Many dimensions inspected, however, were fairly similar in all facial types, thus suggesting a general basic role of the trigeminal nerv

An orbital injury can be responsible for compressing the optic nerve in the optic canal. This compression leads to a syndrome of physiological division with homo-lateral blindness and absence of pupillary reaction of light during stimulation of the injured eye, whereas the light reflex is present with contralateral stimulation. Computed tomography studies show the compression site directly: optic canal fracture, or indirectly: hematoma of posterior ethmoidal cells and sphenoidal sinus, fracture of the posterior part of the orbit. This type of injury can be improved by surgical decompression of

Most cases of osteomyelitis of the skull base occur as a result of inadequately treated localized malignant otitis externa. We present four patients with osteomyelitis of the skull base who did not present initially as malignant otitis externa. Increased morbidity may occur when these atypical cases are not promptly recognized and treated.

A spinal fluid leak from the intracranial space to the nasal respiratory tract is potentially very serious because of the risk of an ascending infection which could produce fulminant meningitis. Cerebrospinal rhinorrhea typically stems from a complication of head trauma, and fortunately these leaks tend to heal spontaneously. In a smaller percentage of cases, intracranial lesions or congenital osteomeningeal defects are harbored, allowing spinal fluid to enter the nasal cavity, and patients with this condition rarely heal without operative intervention. Succesful repair of a dural defect manda

INTRODUCTION: Children with severe congenital absence of teeth present uncommon morphologies and therapeutic challenges. This study was designed to investigate the characteristic skeletal and dental features of this group.
METHODS: A group of 28 children with at least 10 congenitally missing teeth (excluding third molars) was examined roentgenographically. The data were collected from their intraoral series or panoramic views and lateral cephalograms. The results of their cephalometric analyses were compared with classic cephalometric norms and with local population norms.
RESULTS: Specific

Skull-base imaging has been a key factor in the advancement of skull-base surgery. The analysis of MR imaging or CT of the skull base emphasizes important landmarks, which are key to surgical planning. Although the definitive diagnosis usually is done by biopsy, the radiologist can limit the list of possibilities of the identity of a skull base lesion. The apparent site of origin is a key factor. Separation of cystic abnormalities from more solid enhancing abnormalities also is critical.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and sphenoid sinusitis remain major concerns after endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEAs) for midline skull base tumors. To our knowledge, this study is among the first to directly compare synthetic polyurethane foam (SPF) with balloon catheters (BCs) for sphenoid sinus packing, assessing efficacy and safety, including in high‑flow CSF leaks. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center, observational study included 116 patients who underwent EEAs between April 2016 and March 2025. Since May 2021, SPF has replaced BCs for sphenoid sinus

Basal encephalocoeles are rare congenital abnormalities of the skull base. The authors describe a rare case of spontaneous CSF leak and meningitis secondary to an intra-sphenoidal encephalocoele. Initial endoscopic transsphenoidal repair was unsuccessful, necessitating a combined subtemporal and transsphenoidal approach to close the defect.

In the present study, we investigated the relationship between sphenoid sinus, carotid canal, and optic canal on paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT). This study was performed retrospectively. PNSCT images of 300 adult subjects (159 male, 141 female). Sphenoid sinus (pneumatisation, dominancy, septation, inter-sinus septa deviation), anterior clinoid process pneumatisation, Onodi cell, carotid and optic canals (width, dehiscence, classification) were measured. In males, type 3 pneumatised sphenoid sinus (in both sides) and in females type 2 pneumatised sphenoid sinus (right side) and ty
