BACKGROUND: It has been widely documented that quadrupedal animals rarely display natural spontaneous scoliotic rachis deviations of the spinal column. The objective was to determine spinal deformities developed by geriatric monkeys of the Macaca mulatta species, by radiographical and tomographical studies of the vertebral column correlating morphological changes with altered physiological parameters and electrical neurosensorial conductivity of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of six geriatric monkeys was used: three non-scoliotic subjects and three mon

A 35-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis 1 and thoracic kyphoscoliosis had incomplete paraplegia. She had a history of hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma which had been excised 4 years previously. Plain radiographs of the spine revealed kyphoscoliosis from the third to sixth thoracic vertebrae. Kyphosis and scoliosis angles were 86 degrees and 28 degrees, respectively. Radiographs of the skull and hands showed radiological changes suggestive of hyperparathyroidism. Laboratory tests showed low-normal serum calcium, hypophosphatemia, elevated serum alkaline phosphatase, and low s

Idiopathic scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity and in the thoracic region the essential lesion lies in the sagittal plane in the form of an area of inappropriate lordosis. The thoracic kyphosis is normally protected from buckling by being behind the axis of spinal column rotation but when the thoracic lordosis develops it brings the apical region anterior to this axis and thus under compression with resultant buckling failure of the spinal column. The condition of idiopathic thoracic scoliosis is the opposite to idiopathic hyperkyphosis (Scheuermann's disease), the latter being

Precise measurement of Spinal Cord Cross-Sectional Area (SC-CSA) is crucial for monitoring SC health and diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases. Accurate measurement of SC-CSA is challenging due to several factors such as SC curvature, patient positioning, segmentation methods, and limitations of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) resolution. Traditional methods that rely on vertebral levels as a reference suffer from inter-subject variability and limited reproducibility. In this study, we propose a novel landmark-based method to define robust anatomical references for standardizing the delineati

Surgery of the thoracic and lumbar spine must employ monopolar electrical coagulation due to the necessity of bleeding control because alternative methods have too many limitations. The use of such electrocoagulation in cochlear implant (CI) users carries a high risk of damaging the assistive listening device. The objective of this paper is to present the management of 2 CI system users with advanced spinal curvature who required surgical treatment for scoliosis. A review of the literature was conducted on the use of medical procedures based on the conduction of electrical potentials within CI

BACKGROUND: Congenital scoliosis (CS) is a spinal deformity caused by defective segmentation and development of vertebrae during early embryogenesis. It occurs in 0.5%-1% in 1000 births and may rarely occur with congenital defects affecting the heart or genitourinary system. Truncus arteriosus (TA) is a life-threatening cardiac defect in which a single arterial trunk supplies both systemic and pulmonary circulation, leading to complications such as pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and severe hypoxia. Although rare individually, the co-occurrence of both conditions poses unique diagnostic

A 3-D ultrasound (US) imaging technique has been studied to facilitate the diagnosis of spinal deformity without radiation. The objective of this article is to propose an assessment framework to automatically estimate spinal deformity in US spine images. The proposed framework comprises four major components, a US spine image generator, a novel transformer-based lightweight spine detector network, an angle evaluator, and a 3-D modeler. The principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminative scale space tracking (DSST) method are first adopted to generate the US spine images. The proposed det

Akabane virus (AKAV) is known as a major teratogenic agent of ruminant fetuses. In this study, we investigated the relationship between porcine abnormal deliveries and AKAV by serology, pathology, and virology investigations using specimens from 16 stillborn fetuses delivered in southern Japan between 2013 and 2015. The major clinical manifestations in stillborn fetuses were hydranencephaly, arthrogryposis, spinal curvature, and both skeletal muscle and subcutaneous edema. Histologic examination of the specimens identified atrophy of skeletal muscle fibers accompanied by adipose replacement. N

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the most common pediatric musculoskeletal disorder, causes a three-dimensional spine deformity. Lenke type 5 AIS is defined as a structural thoracolumbar/lumbar curve with nonstructural thoracic curves. Although a rod curvature will affect clinical outcomes, intraoperative contouring of the straight rod depends on the surgeon's knowledge and experience. This study aimed to determine the optimum rod geometries to provide a pre-bent rod system for posterior spinal surgery in patients with Lenke type 5 AIS. These pre-bent rods will be beneficial for achievin

BACKGROUND: Recent studies support the need for sagittal alignment restoration when performing lumbar degenerative spinal fusions. The development of patient-specific spine rods (PSSRs) may help maintain or improve sagittal alignment in these surgeries.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted for patients who underwent posterior spinal surgeries involving 4 or less levels. The preplanned PSSR radii of curvature (ROC) was compared with standard prebent rods with a ROC of 125 mm. All surgeries were performed at a single institution by 3 surgeons from September 2016 through October 2018. D

Anterior discectomy and fusion to treat cervical degenerative disc disease is the preferred procedure for many spine surgeons. The ideal device for structural reconstruction of the anterior cervical spine remains controversial. The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of a non-threaded titanium cage in performing anterior spinal fusion for cervical degenerative disc disease. The clinical and radiologic data of 78 consecutive patients were reviewed. Neurologic outcome was assessed using Odom's criteria. Neck pain was graded using a 10-point visual analog scale.

In cataract extraction surgery, patient positioning and surgeon comfort are necessary for success. The patient's head must be flat and parallel to the floor to minimize complications and permit the use of a standard ophthalmic microscope. This position is often difficult in patients with spinal abnormalities, such as age-related hyperkyphosis or the exaggeration of the thoracic spine curvature. Multiple methods have been proposed to improve positioning in patients with spinal abnormalities. While these positions benefit the patient, they are often uncomfortable for the surgeon due to a lack of

BACKGROUND: Spinal motion is facilitated by a "three joint complex", two facet joints and one intervertebral disc at each spinal level. Both the intervertebral discs and facet joints are subject to natural age-related degeneration, and while these processes may be linked it is not clear how. As instability in the disc could underlie facet arthritis, we evaluated the hypothesis that the discs and facet joints are mechanically coupled.
METHODS: We recruited young, asymptomatic volunteers (n = 10; age: mean 25, range 21-30 years; BMI: mean 23.1, range 19.1-29.0 kg/m2) and applied magnetic resona

PURPOSE: This study aimed to improve the effectiveness of orthotic treatment for the patients with AIS using the three-dimensional clinical ultrasound (3D CUS) method in which the optimal location of pressure pad of spinal orthosis was determined with the assistance of ultrasound image analysis.
METHODS: By means of 3D CUS method, the spinous process angle (SPA) could be traced and used as a clinical parameter to estimate the Cobb's angle in order to determine the location of pressure pad. Twenty-one patients (test group) and 22 patients (control group) were recruited to the ultrasound-assist

82 children with nephroblastomas, who had therapy between 1960 and 1983, underwent continuous follow-up examinations until 1988. 79 children who survived had been treated with nephrectomy followed by radiation therapy (n = 72) and chemotherapy (n = 72). 64 of these patients had a combination of both post-surgical treatments. Radiotherapy was performed with cobalt-60 until 1977, followed by high-energy photon and electron beam therapy since 1978. In the beginning the dose applied in each patient within five to seven weeks was 46.5 Gy. Since 1972 it was reduced to 42.8 Gy and after 1978 to 32.3

INTRODUCTION: The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is a potential source of pain in the ASD population. Incidence and predictors of preoperative SIJ pain and rates of resolution with surgery in the ASD population are not well understood.
METHODS: A prospective, multicenter database of surgically treated ASD patients was queried for baseline SIJ pain at the preoperative assessment. SIJ pain was defined as self-reported back pain in the posterior superior iliac spine region scored ≥4 out of 10 and ≥3 of 5 positive provocative SIJ maneuvers. Demographic data, spinal alignment parameters, and health assess
