The application of micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) to the analysis of illicit drug seizures is presented. Areas investigated include general screening and qualitative and, in some instances, quantitative analysis of various drugs, including heroin, opium, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD and anabolic steroids. Much of this work has been initiated and/or improved by the late Prof. Dr. Manfred Donike. OnLine assays for cannabinoids, barbiturates, opiates, and cocaine from Roche Diagnostics were run on the automatic analyzer COBAS FARA II. The assay programs and the cutoff definition were modified to obtain maximum sensitivity and reagent economy. The limits of detection and curve stability data of the modified assays were compared with the original, as well as with EMIT d.a.u. Cannabinoid 20 assay, and the modified assays were found to be more favorable. Modified OnLine assays appear to be a convenient and cost-effective method for drug screening in urine.
