The standard treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is surgery. Partial nephrectomy is often performed for treatment of small RCC. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) offers another nephron-sparing minimally invasive approach. It is most successful for tumors not larger than 3 cm in diameter. The rate of severe complications of RFA is low. Further studies are necessary to determine the long-term efficacy of RFA in RCC.
