Brain connectivity and novel network measures for Alzheimer's disease classification.

We compare a variety of different anatomic connectivity measures, including several novel ones, that may help in distinguishing Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients from controls. We studied diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging from 200 subjects scanned as part of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. We first evaluated measures derived from connectivity matrices based on whole-brain tractography; next, we studied additional network measures based on a novel flow-based measure of brain connectivity, computed on a dense 3-dimensional lattice. Based on these 2 kinds of connectiv

Bioinformatics-Inspired IMU Stride Sequence Modeling for Fatigue Detection Using Spectral-Entropy Features and Hybrid AI in Performance Sports.

Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) provide an accessible means of monitoring fatigue-related changes in running biomechanics, yet most existing methods rely on limited feature sets, lack personalization, or fail to generalize across individuals. This study introduces a bioinformatics-inspired stride sequence modeling framework that integrates spectral-entropy features, sample entropy, frequency-domain descriptors, and mixed-effects statistical modeling to detect fatigue using a single lumbar-mounted IMU. Nineteen recreational runners completed non-fatigued and fatigued 400 m runs, from

Using machine learning methods to analyze the association between urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and chronic bowel disorders in American adults.

The etiology of chronic bowel disorders is multifaceted, with environmental exposure to harmful substances potentially playing a significant role in their pathogenesis. However, research on the correlation between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chronic bowel disorders remains limited. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in 2009-2010, we investigated the relationship between 9 PAHs and chronic diarrhea and constipation in U.S. adults. We employed unsupervised methods such as clustering and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to ide

Rainfall frequency and uncertainty analysis in arid regions using machine learning and statistical distribution models based on a 91-year rainfall record.

Accurate estimation of rainfall depths associated with standard return periods is fundamental for hydraulic design, flood risk assessment, and water resources management, particularly in arid regions. Statistical extreme value distributions have long been the standard approach for rainfall frequency analysis, whereas machine learning (ML) has recently emerged as a potential alternative. This study presents a comprehensive comparison between twenty-five statistical distribution models and three supervised ML regressors-Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boost

Machine learning identifies clinical sepsis phenotypes that translate to the plasma proteome.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis therapy is still limited to treatment of the underlying infection and supportive measures. To date, various sepsis subtypes were proposed, but therapeutic options addressing the molecular changes of sepsis were not identified. With the aim of a future individualized therapy, we used machine learning (ML) to identify clinical phenotypes and their temporal development in a prospective, multicenter sepsis cohort and characterized them using plasma proteomics. METHODS: Routine clinical data and blood samples were collected from 384 patients. Sepsis phenotypes were identified ba

Radiomics and deep learning for immune checkpoint inhibitor outcomes: imaging-derived immune phenotyping and clinical translation across solid tumors.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed the treatment of multiple solid tumors, but durable benefit remains restricted to a subset of patients and conventional size-based imaging does not fully capture immune-related response patterns. Radiomics and deep learning offer a route to convert routine CT, MRI, and PET/CT into quantitative biomarkers of tumor phenotype, whole-body heterogeneity, and temporal treatment response. This narrative review critically synthesizes the evidence across solid tumors with an emphasis on four questions that are often separated in the literature: what

Early Detection Methods for Autism Spectrum Disorder: From Clinical Screening to Multimodal AI.

Early detection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children is essential for timely referral, developmental monitoring, and access to early intervention. However, conventional screening and diagnostic pathways often depend on parent-report instruments, episodic clinical observation, and specialist-administered assessments, which may delay identification during the first years of life. This scoping review maps the methodological landscape of early ASD detection from traditional clinical screening to multimodal artificial intelligence (AI). A structured literature search was conducted ac

Applications of artificial intelligence in systemic lupus erythematosus: integrating multi-omics data for precision medicine.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a clinically and biologically heterogeneous autoimmune disease in which patients with similar or disparate clinical phenotypes can exhibit distinct molecular drivers. This heterogeneity limits the utility of traditional, largely linear, analytic approaches and contributes to variations in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic outcome. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), offers a complementary framework for extracting nonlinear patterns from complex biomedical datasets and for translating high dimensional mo

Counterfactual prescriptions via hierarchical ML for missed chemotherapy appointment prevention.

Missed medical appointments, including cancellations and no-shows, disrupt clinical workflows, reduce resource efficiency, and can compromise patient care. This study develops a machine learning (ML) framework to jointly predict cancellations and no-shows using approximately 1.8 million chemotherapy appointments from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. We implement a hierarchical ML approach that first detects cancellations and then predicts no-shows among the remaining cases. Combining static appointment features with dynamic temporal features derived from prior schedu
