Experimental and clinical evaluation of transperitoneal laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To report a surgical technique for transperitoneal laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy (TLU) in dogs and describe complications and outcome in a cohort of dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study and case series. ANIMALS: Purpose-bred research dogs (n = 3) and canine clinical cases (9). METHODS: In 11 of 12 dogs, a 3 port laparoscopic approach was used and in 1 dog a 4-port approach was used. Incision through the retroperitoneal space was followed by early dissection of the ureter to aid retraction and elevation of the renal hilus. Dissection was performed principally by use of a vesse

Arthroscopically accessible anatomy of the tarsal collateral ligaments in the horse.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the arthroscopically accessible anatomy of the tarsal collateral ligaments in the horse. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. ANIMALS: Cadaveric equine hind limbs (n = 24) obtained from horses without tarsal disease. METHODS: Two pairs of tarsal joints were used to obtain silicone models of the tarsocrural joint and dissect the tarsal collateral ligaments (CLs). Ten pairs of tarsocrural joints had arthroscopic exploration and the accessible parts of the tarsal CLs were marked with an arthroscopic hook knife. Subsequently, the limbs were dissected and the marked positions

The role of muscle activation in cruciate disease.

Traditional investigations into the etiopathogenesis of canine cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease have focused primarily on the biological and mechanical insults to the CCL as a passive stabilizing structure of the stifle. However, with recent collaboration between veterinarians and physical therapists, an increased focus on the role of muscle activity and aberrant motor control mechanisms associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and rehabilitation in people has been transferred and applied to dogs with CCL disease. Motor control mechanisms in both intact and cruciate-def

Estimation of joint incongruence in dysplastic canine elbows before and after dynamic proximal ulnar osteotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize joint incongruence in dysplastic canine elbows before and after dynamic proximal ulnar osteotomy (DPUO). STUDY DESIGN: Clinical, prospective study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 10; 12 elbows) with ≥ 2 mm radioulnar incongruence (RUI), FCP, and/or OCD. METHODS: Computed tomography in a nonload bearing position was used to generate in silico 3D models of the elbow joint before DPUO, and this was repeated after DPUO union (median 3 months postoperatively). On these models, RUI, humeroradial and humeroulnar subchondral joint space width (SJSW) as well as alignment of the proxim

Medial ridge elevation wedge trochleoplasty for medial patellar luxation: a clinical study in 5 dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a surgical technique to elevate the medial trochlear ridge for surgical correction of medial patellar luxation, and to evaluate clinical outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 5) with Grade 3 medial patellar luxation. METHODS: An asymmetrical wedge was removed from the trochlear groove, rotated 180°, and placed in the recess to create an elevated medial trochlear ridge. Postoperative radiography, CT scan, and subjective evaluation of clinical outcomes were performed. RESULTS: Surgical procedure and postoperative recovery were uncomplicated. There was n

Resistance to lateral luxation of two canine total elbow replacement systems under variable mechanical loads.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the loads required to induce lateral luxation of the Iowa State University (ISU) elbow implant, a modified elbow implant, and the normal canine elbow with the ligaments and joint capsule removed. STUDY DESIGN: Mechanical testing on cadaveric specimens SAMPLE POPULATION: Twelve thoracic limbs were harvested from adult, medium sized dogs that had been euthanatized for reasons unrelated to the study. METHODS: The torque needed for luxation was identified on potted cadaver elbows under variable axial load and compared to ISU implants and modified implants. Shear force need

Long-term effect of cervical distraction and stabilization on neurological status and imaging findings in giant breed dogs with cervical stenotic myelopathy.

OBJECTIVES: To assess long-term clinical and imaging outcomes in giant breed dogs with cervical stenotic myelopathy treated surgically. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 7). METHODS: All dogs had lateral or dorsolateral cord compression at 1 or more sites and were treated with cervical distraction and stabilization using PMMA plugs. Four dogs had follow-up CT or CT/myelography performed at least 6 months postoperatively. Spinal canal stenosis measurements were compared between pre- and postoperative CT images. Long-term clinical neurologic re-evaluation ranged from

Stent reconstruction of an injured parotid duct in a thoroughbred colt.

OBJECTIVE: To report successful use of stent repair for a chronically injured parotid duct in a thoroughbred colt. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report. ANIMAL: A 2-year-old thoroughbred colt. METHODS: Chronic injury to the parotid duct was identified 4-cm caudal to the facial vessel notch on the ventral border of the right mandible. After careful surgical dissection of the surrounding firm fibrous tissue, the defect was temporarily stented using an 8-Fr human ureteral catheter (223600 ERU(®) SOFT URETERAL(®) , Laboratoires pharmaceutique, Betschdorf, France) to bridge the tissue loss. OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) long-term survival of dogs with tracheal collapse (TC) receiving cervical extraluminal prosthetic rings (ELR) and (2) whether intrathoracic collapse effects long-term survival of dogs receiving ELR. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 33) with TC that had ELR. METHODS: Medical records (July 2002-July 2008) were searched for TC dogs treated with ELR. Age, breed, gender, location of TC, and age at follow-up (death or censor) were recorded. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated. RESULTS: Of 114 TC dogs, 33 had ELR. Breeds and gender w

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of a bipolar vessel-sealing device for peripheral lung lobe biopsy in healthy dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Mature female hound dogs (n = 6). METHODS: Thoracoscopic access was obtained by placement of a subxiphoid telescope portal with instrument portals at the right 4-6th intercostal spaces and the left 10th intercostal space. The 10-mm Ligasure Atlas device was used to collect a biopsy specimen from the periphery of the left cranial lung lobe. Dogs were recovered from anesthesia.
