Apocrine cystomatosis is a rare condition characterized by clusters of cystically dilated sweat glands or other specialized apocrine glands. Cystic dilation of cutaneous sweat glands has been described in humans, dogs, and cats, but not in pigs, to our knowledge. We describe herein linear, brown, colloid-filled cavities < 1 cm diameter within the subcutaneous fat of the entire dorsal region of carcasses of three 6-mo-old pigs. These incidental findings were detected during meat inspection in 3 different slaughterhouses in Catalonia, Spain. Histopathology revealed multiple cystic cavities lined…

Anhidrosis is a failure in sweat production in response to physiological thermal or chemical stimuli. Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis is a rare disorder without sweat gland pathology and without neurologic symptoms. Most cases have been reported from Far East. We report a case of a 58-year-old Caucasian male who suffered from heat intolerance, heat-induced cutaneous burning and failed to sweat even in sauna for five years. A skin biopsy disclosed no pathologies. He had no neurologic disorders. The diagnosis of acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis was confirmed and treatment wi…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pathology, diagnosis and treatment of a patient with hemotidrosis.
METHODS: Coagulation tests, coagulation factor activities, von Willebrand factor concentration, bleeding time and platelet aggregation were measured. The bloody exudates from the skin was examined under light microscopy. The involved skin area biopsy was examined histologically.
RESULTS: The bloody exudates contained all kinds of normal blood cells mixed with sweat-like fluid, rather than true-sweat. Histopathologic examination showed normal sweat gland structure without blood cells. The patient …

Transient aquagenic palmar hyperwrinkling (TAPH) is a rarely reported cutaneous condition clinically characterized by swelling and hyperwrinkling of the palms, and associated with burning sensations after briefly immersing the hands in water. Upon the withdrawal of water, the symptoms rapidly disappear. We report on a 10-year-old boy with type I diabetes, who developed the typical symptoms of TAPH concomitantly with the onset of palmar hyperhidrosis. Determination of the sodium chloride concentration of the sweat revealed elevated levels. Subsequent screening for the most common mutations of t…

Eyelid lesions with apocrine differentiation are uncommon. A retrospective review of 1,920 biopsied sweat gland lesions at a tertiary hospital's ocular pathology laboratory from 2006 to 2024 revealed seven unique cutaneous eyelid tumors with sweat gland apocrine differentiation. The distinct clinical presentation and histopathologic features of the selected eyelid tumors are described. The lesions were further differentiated based on immunohistochemical analysis. Seven patients were identified with enlarging unilateral eyelid sweat gland lesions. All lesions underwent excisional biopsy and dem…

Wearable, noninvasive sensors enable the continuous monitoring of metabolites in sweat and provide clinical information related to an individual's health and disease states. Uric acid (UA) is a key indicator highly associated with gout, hyperuricaemia, hypertension, kidney disease, and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. However, the detection of UA levels typically relies on invasive blood tests. Therefore, developing a wearable device for noninvasive monitoring of UA concentrations in sweat could facilitate real-time personalized disease prevention. Here, we introduce 1,3,6,8-pyrene tetrasulfonic acid sod…

An isotonic electrolyte solution with a composition similar to equine sweat was compared to an isotonic glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution for oral rehydration therapy in exercising horses. Ten horses were dehydrated by using frusemide and allocated randomly to receive 4 different oral solutions: isotonic sweat-like electrolyte solution, half-strength hypotonic electrolyte solution, isotonic glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution, and plain water. Solutions were given by nasogastric tube using the same volume as the bodyweight lost by each horse. Blood samples were collected before and through…

BACKGROUND: Axillary hyperhidrosis is a dysfunction of the secretion of sweat glands. Conservative treatment modalities are mostly ineffective. Liposuction combined with subcutaneous curettage (TLC) destroys the sweat glands, while Botox injections inhibit the cholinergic transmission.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Of a total of 88 patients, TLC was carried out in 47 and 41 patients received intradermal Botox injections. The effect of both forms of treatment on the quality of life was assessed using a specific hyperhidrosis questionnaire and was correlated with sweat volumes measured by gravimetry.

BACKGROUND: Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) is an autonomic neurological disease in which exocrine glands are oversecreted due to autonomic dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system. Chrna1 promotes the pathogenesis of PFH. We aimed to check if downregulating of Chrna1 by cisatracurium could alleviate the symptoms of PFH.
METHODS: The effect of cisatracurium in a hyperhidrosis mice model induced by pilocarpine hydrochloride was monitored for sweat gland secretion, and ultrastructural sweat secretory granules in sweat glands were analyzed. Meanwhile, markers of hyperhidrosis were checked…

A major function of the skin is the regulation of body temperature by sweat secretions. Sweat glands secrete water and salt, especially NaCl. Excreted water evaporates, cooling the skin surface, and Na+ ions are reabsorbed by the epithelial sodium channels (ENaC). Mutations in ENaC subunit genes lead to a severe multi-system (systemic) form of pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) type I, characterized by salt loss from aldosterone target organs, including sweat glands in the skin. In this study, we mapped the sites of localization of ENaC in the human skin by confocal microscopy using polyclonal anti…

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease commonly found among the Caucasian population. The availability of sweat test and with increasing experience have made it possible to diagnose more cases of CF. Our first case of CF was diagnosed 16 years ago and to date we have managed sixteen cases of CF. Sixteen children were diagnosed with CF in our units at the Paediatric Institute and University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). They were referred with either one or all of the following symptoms: i) recurrent pneumonia, ii) bronchiectasis, iii) failure to thrive, iii) malabsorption or iv…

We examined autonomic dysfunctions in 12 patients with chronic-recurrent-progressive polyradiculoneuritis (C-R-P-PRN), consisting of 6 males and 6 females with the clinical duration of 8 months to 16 years, and with the age ranged 13 and 71 years. Sixteen healthy volunteers, aged 20 to 70 years, were also examined. Thermal sweat rate was recorded on the palm, forearm, upper arm, anterior chest, lateral thigh and lateral aspect of lower leg using a ventilated capsular method in a climatic chamber at 40 degrees C and 40% of relative humidity. After steady state was attained, thermal sweat rate w…

Data on Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) RNA detection in non-blood specimens remain limited. We evaluated CCHFV RNA detection in nasopharyngeal (NP), oropharyngeal (OP), and sweat swab samples from hospitalized patients with CCHF. Among 50 patients with confirmed CCHF, CCHFV RNA was detected in at least one NP or OP swab in 91.5% of patients. Sweat swabs were positive in 34.9% of cases and sweat RNA detection was associated with greater disease severity. Among patients with paired admission and discharge samples 75% became swab PCR-negative at discharge. Upper respiratory swabs …

Generalised anhidrosis (GA) shows a uniform clinical picture whether the pathogenesis involves intrinsic abnormalities of sweat glands or postganglionic sympathetic cholinergic nerve dysfunction. We describe two patients who presented intolerance to heat and anhidrosis. In the first patient, symptoms started at 33 years of age, and were associated with absent tendon reflexes and a mydriatic right pupil unreactive to light. The other patient had been unable to sweat since birth. GA was diagnosed on the basis of clinical findings and thermoregulatory tests. Microneurography and morphological ana…

In a randomised, double-blind, controlled clinical trial of the effect of treatment with tap water iontophoresis, 11 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis were treated actively on one hand and with placebo on the other. The patients' sweat production was 100% higher (median) than measured in control subjects of the same age and sex. Prior to iontophoresis, the patient's sweat production was the same on both hands but after treatment it was reduced significantly on the treated hand (p less than 0.01) compared with the sweat production prior to treatment as well as with that of the untreated side. …

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial prostheses play a vital role in rehabilitating facial form and function, with long-term colour stability being a key determinant of patient satisfaction. These prostheses are routinely exposed to ultraviolet radiation, sweat, and cleaning agents, which may compromise their appearance over time.
AIM: To compare the colour stability of two maxillofacial silicone elastomers, Siloczest LSR 120 and Cosmesil M511 under simulated ageing conditions replicating clinical exposures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 samples (40 per material) were fabricated and divided into…

INTRODUCTION: The major pathophysiological symptom of the menopause affecting daily life is hot flushes, which are also associated with elevated cardiovascular disease risk. A hot flush is a sudden and intense heat sensation causing skin flushing and profuse sweating. Menopause-induced oestrogen deficiency could increase the sensitivity of skin blood vessels and sweat glands in postmenopausal women, which could result in more frequent and larger increases in skin blood flow in postmenopausal women consistent with hot flushes. Furthermore, oestrogen withdrawal could also alter the structure of …

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in Autonomic Nervous System activity are well described in psychosis but their peripheral versus CNS origins remains unresolved. However, the purely peripheral component of the sudomotor sweat reflex can be quantified using the Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (Q-SWEAT), in which local postganglionic fibers are stimulated by applying acetylcholine to the skin.
METHOD: This study assessed Q-SWEAT, psychiatric symptoms (PANSS; HAMD) and cognition (MATRICS) in 33 participants with psychosis, 17 with nonpsychotic affective disorders, and 23 healthy controls. Stati…

BACKGROUND: Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) is characterized by excessive sweating in localized regions, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. The imbalance between sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter 1 (NKCC1) and potassium-chloride cotransporter 2 (KCC2) disrupts chloride ion homeostasis, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of PFH.
METHODS: Sweat gland tissues from 76 healthy controls and 76 PFH patients were collected. Expression levels of NKCC1 and KCC2 were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting. Primary sweat gland cells isolated from …

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a fatal autosomal recessive disorder which affects all exocrine glands, or perhaps all epithelial surfaces. The three organs most consistently affected are the eccrine sweat gland, which produces excessively salty sweat; the lung, in which chronic obstructive pulmonary disease invariably develops and is usually the cause of mortality; and the pancreas, which fails to produce adequate bicarbonate ion and water in nearly all patients, and produces inadequate digestive enzymes in most, giving rise to pancreatic insufficiency. However, the liver, reproductive tracts, intest…
