[Congenital Horner syndrome].

The authors report a case of congenital Horner's syndrome. Through ophthalmological tests, it is realized a comparative study between a patient with congenital Horner's syndrome and a patient who is a carrier of this syndrome acquired by a cervical sympathectomy. We have come to the conclusion that possibly there is a congenital lesion ea the third sympathetic neuron.

Sympathetic connections to the fifth and sixth cranial nerves.

Thirty additional parasellar gross dissections and light microscopic examinations have been carried out, confirming a previous observation that the sympathetic nerve or nerves running with the carotid artery gives off a multitude of fine branches at irregular intervals on the way up, but the largest residual component joins the sixth cranial nerve and leaves to join the first division of the fifth cranial nerve. No similar fibers can be found by us to the sympathetic in the neck results in a Horner's syndrome and that section of the ophthalmic artery at its point of departure from the carotid

Sympatho-adrenal hyperactivity--the key to irreversible shock?

There would appear sound evidence on which to incriminate sustained sympatho-adrenal hyperactivity as a deleterious factor of prime importance in hypovolaemic shock. The use of sympathomimetics in the treatment of shock of this type is irrational and deleterious. Their rational use in those few cases of clinical shock where they are indicated will have to await knowledge of plasma catecholamine levels in such cases. Experimental studies involving α- and β-adrenergic blockade, unilaterally and in combination, have revealed that, contrary to previous theories, deterioration is mediated through b

[The autonomic system reactivity of airport technical personnel using individual protective devices against noise].

The study covered cardiac rhythm variability and hemodynamic parameters in airfield technical personnel under exposure to aviation noise and with use of individual protective measures against noise. Individual protective means remove unfavorable stressful external effects of noise--that is manifested by more stable parameters of sympathetic nervous system activity.

[Thyreotoxic crisis triggered by stimulation of the adrenal gland medulla].

Thyroid storm was observed in a patient with Grave's disease after stimulation of release of epinephrine and norepinephrine with 2-DG. Measurements of catecholamine secretion before and during onset of thyrotoxic crisis suggested the important bearing of increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system on pathogenesis of thyroid storm.

Neurodevelopment. Parasympathetic neurons originate from nerve-associated peripheral glial progenitors.

The peripheral autonomic nervous system reaches far throughout the body and includes neurons of diverse functions, such as sympathetic and p … arasympathetic neurons in diverse tissues and organs, which may enable wiring of the developing parasympathetic nervous system.

Sympathetic Denervation for Treatment of Ventricular Arrhythmias.

Ventricular arrhythmias are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with heart disease. A growing understanding of the cardiac autonomic nervous system's crucial role in the pathogenesis of ventricular arrhythmias has led to the development of several neuromodulation therapies. Sympathetic neuromodulation is being increasingly utilized to treat ventricular arrhythmias refractory to medical therapy and catheter ablation. There is a growing body of preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the use of thoracic epidural anesthesia, stellate ganglion blockade, cardiac sympathetic de

Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Epidemiology, Etiology and Management.

The spinal cord is a conduit within the central nervous system (CNS) that provides ongoing communication between the brain and the rest of the body, conveying complex sensory and motor information necessary for safety, movement, reflexes, and optimization of autonomic function. After a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), supraspinal influences on the peripheral nervous system and autonomic nervous system (ANS) are disrupted, leading to spastic paralysis, sympathetic blunting, and parasympathetic dominance, resulting in cardiac dysrhythmias, systemic hypotension, bronchoconstriction, copious re

Cardiac Autonomic Dynamics Differentially Shape Cognitive and Affective Theory of Mind: Evidence From Respiratory Manipulation.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a fundamental component of social cognition that enables individuals to infer others' mental states and predict their behavior. Although ToM may be shaped by cardiac autonomic dynamics, the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying its cognitive (CToM) and affective (AToM) components remain unclear. Prior research has predominantly emphasized cardiac parasympathetic (PNS) modulation, whereas the role of cardiac sympathetic (SNS) activation-particularly under experimental manipulation-remains underexplored. The present study experimentally manipulated cardiac autonomic s

Post-stroke hemiplegic limb cold sensation and sympathetic nervous regulation: A review.

PurposeThis review aimed to compare the efficacy of various sympathetic nerve regulation techniques in the treatment of cold sensations or abnormal sweating in hemiplegic limbs following stroke, providing guidance for managing autonomic nervous system dysfunction in post-stroke patients.MethodsA comprehensive search of the PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases was conducted using the keywords "cerebral infarction," "cerebral hemorrhage," "stroke," "stellate ganglion block," "sympathetic nerve block," "sympathetic neurolysis," and "radiofrequency sympathectomy." The autonomic and nociceptive response to acute experimental stress is impaired in people with knee osteoarthritis: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in autonomic function are evident in some chronic pain conditions but have not been thoroughly examined in people wit … ress was lacking in the knee OA and FM groups. CONCLUSION: Preliminary evidence shows impaired parasympathetic nervous system function at rest and in response to nociceptive and mental stress in people with knee OA, with some evidence of altered sympathetic nervous system function. Impaired ANS function could contribute to ongoing pain experienced, and interventions that t …

Neuro-immune crosstalk in breast cancer: molecular mechanisms from stress signals to immune escape.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) exhibits marked biological heterogeneity and remains a major cause of cancer-related death in women. With adv … ensity is elevated in BC tissues and correlates with greater invasiveness and poorer prognosis. The sympathetic nervous system promotes tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis mainly through β-adrenergic signaling and suppression of anti-tumor immunity. Chronic psychological stress further enhances tumor-promoting immune changes through sustained neuroendocrine activatio …

Reduced unilateral sweating caused by varicella zoster virus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster is an infectious skin disease caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which has been latent in the posterior root ganglia of the spinal cord or cranial ganglia for an extended period. Neurological complications caused by herpes zoster include aseptic meningitis, white matter disease, peripheral motor neuropathy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. However, reduced unilateral sweating caused by the VZV is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports the case of a 34-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with sore throat, dizziness, and
