Diagnosis and management of unusual dental abscesses in children.

Although the majority of dental abscesses in children originate from dental caries or trauma, a few are associated with unusual conditions which challenge diagnosis and management. Recent research findings have shed light on these unusual entities and greatly improved understanding of their clinical implications. These conditions include developmental abnormalities such as dens invaginatus in which there is an invagination of dental tissues into the pulp chamber and dens evaginatus in which a tubercle containing pulp is found on the external surface of a tooth crown. In addition, inherited con…

Clinical Complications of Fixed Anterior Prostheses After Traumatic Premature Loss of Primary Maxillary Incisors: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Premature loss of primary maxillary incisors after traumatic dental injuries may require secondary rehabilitation in preschool children. Evidence on complications associated with fixed anterior prostheses in this context remains limited. This retrospective cohort study evaluated recorded complications of fixed anterior prostheses supported by preformed crowns for prematurely lost primary maxillary incisors, with emphasis on trauma-related tooth loss and recurrent traumatic episodes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, clinical records of children treated

Multidisciplinary approach in the management of a complicated crown root fracture.

BACKGROUND: This article describes the management of a complicated crown root fracture. CASE REPORT: A young patient presented with a crown root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor with an oblique subgingival fracture line. A multidisciplinary treatment approach including endodontic treatment, orthodontic extrusion, surgical extraction and intra-alveolar repositioning was used to gain sufficient crown length of the fractured maxillary incisor. The coronally repositioned maxillary left central incisor was stabilised by sutures and a resin wire splint. A resin core was built up follo

Orthodontic Treatment of Maxillary Incisors with Severe Root Resorption Caused by Bilateral Canine Impaction in a Class II Division 1 Patient.

This case report shows the successful alignment of bilateral impacted maxillary canines. A 12-year-old male with the chief complaint of the protrusion of his maxillary anterior teeth happened to have bilateral maxillary canine impaction on the labial side of his maxillary incisors. Four maxillary incisors showed severe root resorption because of the impacted canines. The patient was diagnosed as skeletal Class II malocclusion with proclined maxillary incisors. The impacted canine was carefully retracted using sectional buccal arch wires to avoid further root resorption of the maxillary incisor

Effect of finish line design and cementation on fracture resistance of 3D printed definitive crowns.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While 3-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a suitable technique for fabricating definitive restorations, the influence of cervical finish line design, cementation strategy, and artificial aging on fracture resistance remains unclear. PURPOSE: This in vitro study aimed to identify the optimal preparation design and cementation method based on the fracture resistance of 3D printed definitive premolar crowns immediately or after aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 120 3D printed definitive crowns were fabricated using printing resin fortified with ceramic fillers

The effect of different ferrule heights and crown-to-root ratios on fracture resistance of endodontically-treated mandibular premolars restored with fiber post or cast metal post system: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different ferrule heights and crown-to-root ratios on the fracture resistance of endodontically-treated premolars restored with fiber post or cast metal post system. METHODS: Eighty extracted human mandibular first premolars with single root canal were treated endodontically and cut from 2.0 mm above the buccal cemento-enamel junction, to create horizontal residual roots. The roots were randomly divided into two groups. The roots in group FP were restored with a fiber post-and-core system, while the roots in group MP were restored wit

Evaluation of Fracture Resistance of Reattached Fractured Tooth Fragment Stored in Different Storage Media: An In Vitro Study.

AIM: To evaluate the fracture resistance of coronal fractured tooth fragments stored in five different storage media when reattached with nanohybrid flowable composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The crown portion of 50 extracted human permanent maxillary central incisors were divided into three equal parts (incisal third, middle third and cervical third) and then marked incisal third were cut with the diamond disk. These were divided into five equal groups according to the type of storage media used i.e. dry storage, fresh tender coconut water, HBSS, milk, and propolis for 2 hours. Coronal fract

Decoronation of an ankylosed tooth: Postoperative restoration by means of an intermediate fixed orthodontic laboratory device.

UNLABELLED: Rehabilitation of missing decoronated permanent incisors in growing children and adolescents is a major challenge. The psychologic impact of the loss of an incisor is significant due to its immediate influence on facial appearance. Final restoration is planned only after skeletal growth cessation. Consequently, the fabrication and installation of an immediate temporary restoration, which is expected to remain in place for a long period, must meet the patient's esthetic demands and be durable in the oral environment. Several proposed removable and fixed restorations have presented s

Management of the dentogingival complex after forced eruption: a case report.

Trauma to anterior teeth can be devastating to patients and also can present a variety of clinical challenges for the restorative dentist. Although many solutions exist today to restore or replace damaged anterior teeth, the management of hard tissue, soft tissue, and the resulting esthetic outcome can be unpredictable and undesirable. This case report demonstrates the use of forced eruption in restoring a severely fractured central incisor. Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the dentogingival complex will achieve predictable and esthetic results.

Crocodyliform feeding traces on juvenile ornithischian dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Kaiparowits Formation, Utah.

Crocodyliforms serve as important taphonomic agents, accumulating and modifying vertebrate remains. Previous discussions of Mesozoic crocody … bite marks present on a left scapula and a right femur, as well as a partial probable crocodyliform tooth crown (ovoid in cross-section) preserved within a puncture on the right femur, comprise the bulk of the feeding evidence. Computed tomography scans of the femoral puncture reveal impact damage to the surrounding bone and that the distal tip of the embedde …

Outcome of orthodontic space closure with a missing maxillary central incisor.

Orthodontic space closure is one of the treatment alternatives when a maxillary central incisor is missing. Because no systematic analysis of such treatment results is available, a sample of 20 consecutively treated patients was examined in a follow-up study. All patients had received orthodontic treatment with the objective of closing the space for the missing central incisor. Biologic features and the clinical appearance of the recontoured lateral incisor (test tooth) replacing the missing tooth were compared with the neighboring intact central incisor, which served as control tooth. The pat

Infected Dentigerous Cyst and its Conservative Management: A Report of Two Cases.

AIM: To check the efficacy of decompression technique in children with dentigerous cysts. BACKGROUND: Most commonly occurring odontogenic cysts in the oral cavity are radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.1 According to Kramer, a cyst is defined as a pathological cavity having fluid, semi-fluid, or gaseous contents, which is not created by the accumulation of pus. A cyst which is lined by epithelium is known as a true cyst and that which is not lined by epithelium known as a pseudocyst.2 The dictionary meaning of dentigerous is "structures resembling teeth".3 A dentigerous cyst is found envel

Long-term tooth loss in periodontally compromised but treated patients according to the type of prosthodontic treatment. A retrospective study.

If prosthodontic treatment is considered after periodontal therapy, the questions arise i) does prosthodontic treatment affect the treatment outcome of the dentition in general and ii) which type of prosthesis is related to best treatment outcome of abutment teeth? Our goal was to compare long-term tooth loss after comprehensive periodontal therapy in patients with or without prosthodontic treatment. Ninety patients' charts with a total of 1937 teeth who had received comprehensive periodontal treatment 5-17 years ago by the same periodontist were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty-five patients

Characterization of crocodile teeth: correlation of composition, microstructure, and hardness.

Structure and composition of teeth of the saltwater crocodile Crocodylus porosus were characterized by several high-resolution analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction in combination with elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed that the mineral phase of the teeth is a carbonated calcium-deficient nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite in all three tooth-constituting tissues: Dentin, enamel, and cementum. The fluoride content in the three tissues is very low (<0.1 wt.%) and comparable to that in human teeth. The mineral content of dentin, enamel, and cementum as determined by thermogravimet

Development of prognostic indicators using classification and regression trees for survival.

The development of an accurate prognosis is an integral component of treatment planning in the practice of periodontics. Prior work has evaluated the validity of using various clinical measured parameters for assigning periodontal prognosis as well as for predicting tooth survival and change in clinical conditions over time. We critically review the application of multivariate Classification And Regression Trees (CART) for survival in developing evidence-based periodontal prognostic indicators. We focus attention on two distinct methods of multivariate CART for survival: the marginal goodness-
