Dental injuries and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and traumatic dental injuries in children. A total of 194 children aged 7-15 years participated in this study. Fifty-seven traumatic injuries to permanent teeth were observed in 33 children. Although a statistically significant difference was not found (p= .848), the rate of incidence was higher in the group with ADHD (17.5%) than in the control group (16.5%). The maxillary right central incisors accounted for nearly half of all injured teeth, while the maxillary central incisors

Surgical extrusion of crown-root-fractured teeth: a clinical review.

AIM: In this clinical study combined surgical and endodontic treatment was performed in 20 cases of crown-root fracture and the outcomes reviewed. METHODOLOGY: Surgical treatment involved a conventional extraction and stabilization technique. Root canal treatment using calcium hydroxide was performed. Before root canal obturation, a calcium hydroxide dressing was maintained for 3 months. RESULTS: Follow-up examinations, which varied between 6 and 36 (mean 14.5) months, showed that there were no radiographic and clinical signs of progressive root resorption, marginal bone loss or periapical d

Single-Breath Simultaneous Measurement of DLNO and DLCO as Predictor of the Emphysema Component in COPD - A Retrospective Observational Study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Extensive carious lesions and/or large preexisting restorations possibly contribute to crack formation, ultimately resulting in a fracture that may lead to the loss of a tooth cusp. Hence, preparation design strategy in conjunction with the restorative material selected could be influential in the occurrence of a cuspal fracture. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fatigue behavior and fracture strength of maxillary premolars restored with direct composite and indirect ceramic inlays and overlays, with different preparation depths in the prese

Retrospective survey of dental anomalies and pathology detected on maxillary occlusal radiographs in children between 3 and 5 years of age.

PURPOSE: Radiographs play an important role in the diagnosis of anomalies and pathology of the oral structures of young children as well as in the interception and management of developmental problems in the dentition. The occlusal film, commonly indicated in the young child, is a helpful tool in establishing a baseline and in revealing certain region-specific dental concerns in a timely fashion. The purpose of this retrospective study was to perform a comprehensive examination of maxillary occlusal radiographs in a clinical pediatric population and to determine the prevalence of dental anomal

Surgical repositioning of intruded immature permanent incisor: an updated treatment concept.

Intrusion of immature permanent anterior teeth presents a great dilemma due to variety of treatment options. The ideal treatment option is the one with least probability of developing complications like external root resorption, obliteration of pulp canal, marginal bone loss etc. This paper presents a case report with treatment strategy of repositioning, splinting, successfully attempted apexification and obturation of a completely intruded immature permanent central incisor. Excellent healing with no post-operative complications even after 10 months of follow up.

Hyper-IgE syndrome in an 11 year old female presenting with acneiform rash.

Hyper-IgE (HIES) is a rare, primary immunodeficiency characterised by eczema, recurrent staphylococcal infections, pneumonia, increased serum IgE and eosinophilia. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl presenting to dermatology with an acneiform facial rash and associated bacterial lymphadenitis. History was significant for otitis media, primary tooth retention, low impact wrist fracture, infantile acne and an absence of eczema or pneumonia. Investigations demonstrated mildly elevated IgE, normal eosinophils but positivity for a STAT3 gene mutation-thus representing a case of HIES present

Tongue piercing: case report of a local complication.

Historically, wearing adornments on pierced body parts has been associated with many cultures as manifestations of religious or cultural identities. Currently, its use has a broad acceptance among young people. The most common sites for piercings are the tongue and lower lip in the oral cavity. Several complications may be associated with this practice with the most frequently observed being halitosis, periodontitis, tooth fracture, glossitis, and the formation of abscesses. This paper is a case report of a patient who had a complication from a piercing on the tongue located under the overlyin

Delayed endodontic and prosthetic treatment of two traumatized incisors.

This case report describes the delayed endodontic and prosthetic treatment of two maxillary central incisors in a 16-year-old patient. Both teeth had been traumatized eight years previously. The examination revealed arrested root formation with wide open apices, periapical inflammation and inflammatory resorption. Endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide led to formation of hard tissue barriers in both teeth so that definite obturation could be performed. One tooth was lost due to a deep crown-root-fracture and replaced by an intraosseous implant, whereas the other incisor was retained for

Dens evaginatus. Case report and review of the literature.

Dens evaginatus is a disturbance in tooth formation that produces a tubercle of hard tissue on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. This unusual condition occurs most frequently in Oriental persons and is relatively uncommon in the western hemisphere. The tubercle, which often contains pulp tissue, can cause alterations in occlusion; pulpal and periapical inflammation are common sequelae of attrition or fracture of the evagination. Although teeth with necrotic pulps require extraction or endodontic therapy, prophylactic pulp capping is recommended for vital teeth. This case report of a 24-year-

[Diagnostic considerations of cone beam CT used in endodontics].

Cone beam CT (CBCT) has been widely used in endodontics in recent years. To promote the rational and effective application of CBCT in endodontics, this article introduces the principle of "As low as diagnostically acceptable being indication-oriented and patient-specific (ALADAIP)" for radiographic examination in endodontics. It summarizes and discusses key points of CBCT images evaluation in root canal anatomical variations, dens invaginatus, pulp calcification, odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, root fractures, periapical lesions, and post-endodontic treatment pain. Additionally, it explores h

[Osteogenesis imperfecta in monozygotic twins in Burundi].

Little data is available about osteogenesis imperfecta in Black African children. This defect was diagnosed in monozygotic twins from Rwanda who presented multiple fractures, in particular of the femur, when they began to walk. Osteogenesis imperfecta was confirmed by lower limb deformity, presence of wormian bones in the skull, blue sclera, and tooth defects. In addition to the fact that it is uncommon to encounter this condition in monozygotic twins, this case is interesting for several reasons. Was osteogenesis imperfecta in these patients type I, frequent, or type III, exceptional? More im

Oral symptoms in bulimia nervosa. A survey of 34 cases.

Bulimia nervosa is increasingly recognized as an eating disorder with significant medical and dental complications, including increased caries rate, thermal hypersensitivity, enamel erosion, xerostomia, and parotid gland hypertrophy. This article reviews the oral manifestations in bulimia nervosa and presents a questionnaire study of oral symptoms in 34 women with bulimia nervosa. Twenty-three (68%) of the subjects reported dental symptoms, such as hypersensitive teeth (47%), tooth pain (18%), dental fractures (6%), and subjectively increased caries rate (29%). Twelve women (35%) reported dry

Dental wear caused by association between bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux disease: a rehabilitation report.

Bruxism is a pathological activity of the stomatognathic system that involves tooth grinding and clenching during parafunctional jaw movements. Clinical signs of bruxism are mostly related to dental wear and muscular and joint discomforts, but a large number of etiological factors can be listed, as local, systemic, psychological and hereditary factors. The association between bruxism, feeding and smoking habits and digestive disorders may lead to serious consequences to dental and related structures, involving dental alterations (wear, fractures and cracks), periodontal signs (gingival recessi

Influence of periapical radiographs with different vertical angulations and digital filters on horizontal root fracture diagnosis: an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of the number of periapical radiographs with different vertical angles of the X-ray beam and the impact of digital enhancement filters on the diagnosis of horizontal root fracture (HRF). METHODS: Twenty-four single-rooted teeth, 12 with HRF and 12 without HRF, composed the sample. For the first evaluation, periapical radiographs of the teeth were acquired individually with the VistaScan® system, using three vertical angulations of the X-ray beam (orthoradial, plus 15°, and minus 15°), which were arranged in different image files containing one, two, or th

Contrasting Responses Following Transverse Root Fractures in Two Maxillary Central Incisors: (a) Marginal Breakdown With Superimposed Infection and (b) Transient Internal Surface and Tunnelling Resorption. A Case Report of Management With a 34-Year 9-Month Follow-Up.

An example of contrasting responses in two root fractured teeth in a 16-year-old male seriously injured in a hit-and-run motor accident is documented over a 34-year 9-month period. Extended non-surgical endodontic management was necessary for one of the root-fractured central incisors that had developed an infective marginal breakdown, and by contrast, the contralateral incisor with a diagnosis of internal surface resorption and internal tunneling resorption was carefully monitored to ultimate resolution.

Comparative Evaluation of Two Post-Bonding Reinforcement Protocols for Fragment Reattachment in Uncomplicated Crown Fracture-An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Re-bonding of a fractured fragment without any preparations or reinforcement has been recommended as the preferred treatment of uncomplicated crown fractures. A recent systematic review found that post-bonding reinforcements could reduce the risk of loss of attached fragments in teeth with uncomplicated and complicated crown fractures. Hence, this study aimed to compare various techniques of reinforcement in terms of the force required to fracture, using bovine incisor models with simulated uncomplicated crown fractures. METHODS: This in vitro study was initiated after obtain
