Hyper-beta-alaninemia was found in a somnolent, convulsing infant. Hyper-beta-aminoaciduria (beta-ala, betaAIB and taurine) was also observed, varying directly with plasma beta-alanine concentration. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the health status of Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) soldiers changed after one year of military service.
METHODS: We selected 483 ROKAF soldiers from the 11 749 recruits who participated in the 2011 physical examination. The selected soldiers underwent another physical examination in 2012 for advancement to senior airman. Data from 2011 and 2012 were merged. To collect data on lifestyle, a questionnaire was sent to all included subjects via the military intranet e-mail service.

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is a rare inherited form of chorioretinal degeneration due to a deficiency of ornithine aminotransferase (OAT). We localized the enzyme in rat ocular tissues using immunocytochemical procedures. Immunoreactivity was observed in the epithelia of ciliary body, iris, and lens. Retinal pigment epithelium and Müller cells were immunoreactive in the retina. A little immunoreactive product was found in the choroid. Our findings suggested that OAT plays an important role in ornithine metabolism in these ocular tissues.

Cytomegalovirus infection is typically asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals. A 26-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a fever and breathlessness. BACKGROUND: Transient infantile hypertriglyceridemia (HTGTI) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1 (GPD1) gene.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of HTGTI in a Chinese female infant. She presented with hepatomegaly, hypertriglyceridemia, moderately elevated transaminases, and hepatic steatosis at 3.5 months of age. A novel mutation c.523C>T, p. (Q175*) was identified in GPD1. The patient was a homozygote and her parents were heterozygous for the mutation. Ultrastructural study showed intrahepatocytic lipid droplets.

We experienced two cases of renal infarction with atrial fibrillation who presented with acute abdominal pain. On initial urinalysis, both patients showed no hematuria, but the plasma lactate dehydrogenase level was markedly elevated with little or no rise in plasma transaminases. The effect of single dose of praziquantel (400 mg/kg) or two doses on two consecutive days was studied in mice infected with S. mansoni.
