Some violence related to CoViD-19 counteracting measures occurred in some Italian prison last month. Epidemic CoViD-19 reflects the higher risk of infections among inmates and personnel, due to closed proximity, prison overcrowding and structural conditions of Italian prisons. In the world, the higher risk infections among prisoners has been investigated in many studies, showing that, compared with the general public, people in prisons have a higher prevalence of infection such as HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and tuberculosis. This is recognized as a major issue for the health of people in pri

Exposure to pathogenic agents is a major occupational risk factor in healthcare facilities. The most common pathogenic agents are human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In Italy, about 70-80% of all cases of exposure to biological agents result from injuries caused by needles or other sharp instruments used during healthcare procedures. These accidents place a high economic burden on healthcare facilities. Indeed, each event is estimated to cost around € 375. Various studies have shown that the adoption of needlestick-prevention devices reduces

Few guidelines for health care of refugees exist in Germany. Screening as a part of initial health checks as well as general organisation of early health care for refugees is very heterogenous across different regions. Current experience will be relevant to develop integrated health care models. Prevention and care of infectious diseases are an important part of early health care for refugees, even if non-communicable diseases and mental health conditions should also be considered in every effort to design early health care models. We are presenting a pragmatic review of current evidence for p

At least 80% of the whole Polish population, including prepubertal children and adolescents, adults and seniors, are vitamin D deficient, defined as 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L. 83% of Polish newborns start their lives at the state of vitamin D deficiency because 78% of their mothers are also deficient. It was observed that treating patient vitamin D deficiency to vitamin D status serum 25(OH)D) 75-100 nmol/L increased effectiveness of therapies in infectious diseases (chronic hepatitis C, tuberculosis), osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Chronic Kidney Diseases and atopic dermatitis. . This case report describes the clinical, ultrasonographic and postmortem findings in an alpaca with Mycobacterium kansasii infection. The alpaca was referred because of chronic weight loss and weakness. The results of clinical examination, haematology and serum biochemistry were not diagnostic. Ultrasonography of the liver revealed multiple, hyperechogenic lesions with a diameter of 1 to 3 cm. Histological evaluation of a liver biopsy sample showed acute, multifocal, suppurative, necrotising hepatitis. Despite treatment with antibiotics, the alpaca died. Postmortem examination revealed nodular

Non-human primates (NHP) have become an indispensable model in studying the common and dangerous human chronic infections, including HIV/SIV, Hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis. More recently, we and others have used aged NHP to model human immune aging. Chronic infections and aging are both characterized by a significant depletion of defined lymphocyte subsets and the compensatory attempts to regenerate the immune system. As the efficacious antiviral drugs and novel methods to improve and boost the immune system emerge, therapeutic immune regeneration has become a realistic goal in both the

Retrospective analysis of 982 renal transplants over 21 years (1981 to 2002) sought to evaluate the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB). This analysis included 74 patients: 30 with a past TB history, who had INH prophylaxis since the beginning of immunosuppression, and 44 who only became TB infected after receiving transplants. The diagnosis of TB was made by a compatible medical situation with bacteriological/histological confirmation, which when not possible, underwent a therapeutic test occur. The average time for the illness to surge was 3 years. The mortality rate was 34.9% (15/44). Patients

Vasculitis may involve the central and peripheral nervous system in HIV-infected patients. Central nervous system vasculitis is rare with HIV infection and most are owing to opportunistic infections including varicella, CMV, fungal, tuberculosis, and syphilis. Vasculitis of the peripheral nerve may cause mononeuritis multiplex or polyneuropathy, sometimes as the first symptom of HIV or after AIDS has developed. Symptoms may be limited to the peripheral nerve. The etiology may be infection of endothelial cells, hepatitis B or HIV-induced immune complexes, or dysregulation of cytokines and adhes

BACKGROUND: The number of families traveling with their children to their country of origin and/or to tropical destinations has increased in Switzerland and includes a changing profile and multinational range of patients. Defining the profile of reported travel-associated illnesses will help to improve the prevention and treatment of such illnesses in children.
METHODS: This study includes children aged up to 16 years who sought medical advice for a presumed travel-related illness at the emergency room of the University of Zürich Children's Hospital during the period July 2007 to December 200

BACKGROUND: Severe liver injuries were attributed to the rifampin and pyrazinamide (RZ) regimen after it was recommended for treating latent tuberculosis infection. Implicating RZ as the likeliest cause required excluding alternative causes.
METHODS: US health departments reported data on patients who died or were hospitalized for liver disease within 1 month after taking RZ for latent tuberculosis infection from October 1998 through March 2004. The circumstances were investigated on site for each case. Illness characteristics, reasons for RZ treatment, doses and frequency of administration o

BACKGROUND: In Germany, medical care of prisoners is completely separated from extramural health care. The extent and quality of medical care among prisoners in Germany are therefore largely unknown. We performed a secondary data analysis of pharmacy sales data for tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis C (HCV) and opioid substitution treatment (OST) delivered to prisons in 11 federal states (FS) in Germany between 01/2012 and 03/2013. The aims of this study were to assess (i) the treatment availability for the selected diseases and OST in German prisons, (ii) the proportion of prisoners treated pe

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an inducible enzyme involved in the catalysis of heme conversion into biliverdin. We describe a patient with a novel stop-gain mutation in the HMOX1 coding sequence resulting in HO-1 deficiency. A 17-month-old female with fever, tachypnea, and signs of respiratory distress was referred to our center. Four admissions ensued during the eight months follow up. At the first admission, she had massive pericardial effusion without any laboratory findings for tuberculosis, viral infectionsor malignancies. An abdominal ultrasound examination confirmed hepatomegaly.Laboratory

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment is highly effective, but response to therapy varies by geography and population subgroups. We assessed differences in TB treatment response in a representative and heterogeneous Brazilian population. We estimated genetic ancestry according to major genetic ancestry groups (African, European, and Amerindian) in the Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis (RePORT)-Brazil cohort using ADMIXTURE software. RePORT-Brazil is an observational prospective cohort study of individuals with newly-diagnosed, culture-confirmed, pulmonary TB. Outcomes attribute
