Do self-statements enhance the effectiveness of virtual reality exposure therapy? A comparative evaluation in acrophobia.

There is a clear need for more detailed analysis of the role of cognitive self-statements in virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). To date, no research on this topic has been done. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether coping self-statements would enhance the effectiveness of VRET. In a randomized crossover design, 26 patients with acrophobia (DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia) were randomly assigned to two sessions of VRET followed by two sessions of VRET plus coping self-statements, or the other way around: first two sessions of VRET plus coping self-statements follow

The role of presence in virtual reality exposure therapy.

A growing body of literature suggests that virtual reality is a successful tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Virtual reality (VR) researchers posit the construct of presence, defined as the interpretation of an artificial stimulus as if it were real, to be a presumed factor that enables anxiety to be felt during virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE). However, a handful of empirical studies on the relation between presence and anxiety in VRE have yielded mixed findings. The current study tested the following hypotheses about the relation between presence and anxi

D-HaploDB: a database of definitive haplotypes determined by genotyping complete hydatidiform mole samples.

The Definitive Haplotype Database (D-HaploDB) is a web-accessible resource of genome-wide definitive haplotypes determined from a collection of Japanese complete hydatidiform moles (CHMs), each of which carries a genome derived from a single sperm. Currently, the database contains genotypes for 281 439 common SNPs from 74 CHMs which were determined by a high-throughput array-based oligonucleotide hybridization technique. The database also presents maps of haplotype blocks and linkage disequilibrium bins together with tagSNPs that might prove useful for association studies of disease genes. Cry

The development of a symptom questionnaire for assessing virtual reality viewing using a head-mounted display.

PURPOSE: Virtual reality devices, including virtual reality head-mounted displays, are becoming increasingly accessible to the general public as technological advances lead to reduced costs. However, there are numerous reports that adverse effects such as ocular discomfort and headache are associated with these devices. To investigate these adverse effects, questionnaires that have been specifically designed for other purposes such as investigating motion sickness have often been used. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a standard questionnaire for use in investigating symptoms t

The virtual advisor program: linking students to mentors via the world wide web.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medicine (EM) is a popular specialty for medical students choosing a career. Many attend medical schools without an affiliated EM residency and lack both the formal mentorship and informal guidance provided by medical school advisors (or faculty) involved in an accredited EM training program. Others desire specialized advice based on geographic or specific academic interest. OBJECTIVE: The authors describe user characteristics of a Web-based virtual advisor program that paired medical students with EM faculty advisors. METHODS: Prospective users access the system from a

Automating sentinel-1 SLC product processing: Parallelization and optimization for efficient polarimetric parameter extraction.

Processing Sentinel-1 (S1) Single Look Complex (SLC) data is time-consuming, even with software like SNAP or PolSARpro. Command line processing on Windows provides an automated alternative, enabling R-based processing of multiple S1-SLC files without manual interaction. Here we demonstrate a user friendly automated process, to process an unlimited number of S1-SLC images, tailored for users with minimal SAR or programming competence. The proposed workflow integrates RStudio, SNAP, and PolSARpro software libraries to implement the same processes a user can achieve via the corresponding graphic

Towards a Machine-Learning Approach for Sickness Prediction in 360° Stereoscopic Videos.

Virtual reality systems are widely believed to be the next major computing platform. There are, however, some barriers to adoption that must be addressed, such as that of motion sickness - which can lead to undesirable symptoms including postural instability, headaches, and nausea. Motion sickness in virtual reality occurs as a result of moving visual stimuli that cause users to perceive self-motion while they remain stationary in the real world. There are several contributing factors to both this perception of motion and the subsequent onset of sickness, including field of view, motion veloci

Human nephrotoxicity prediction models for three types of kidney injury based on data sets of pharmacological compounds and their metabolites.

The kidney is the most important organ for the excretion of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites. Among the complex structures of the kidney, the proximal tubule and renal interstitium are major targets of nephrotoxins. Despite its importance, there are only a few in silico models for predicting human nephrotoxicity for drug candidates. Here, we present quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for three common patterns of drug-induced kidney injury, i.e., tubular necrosis, interstitial nephritis, and tubulo-interstitial nephritis. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to b

Is virtual endoscopy of the middle ear useful?

Virtual endoscopy is a relatively new imaging technology in otology, and therefore data on its efficacy in clinical situations are limited. We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the clinical relevance of radiologic diagnoses based on virtual endoscopy of the middle ear. Our patient population was made up of 30 adults who were scheduled to undergo surgery to correct conductive hearing loss of unknown etiology. Virtual endoscopy was performed on three-dimensional images that were constructed from images obtained with conventional two-dimensional computed tomography (CT). Findings on virtu

Children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are impaired at place learning but not cued-navigation in a virtual Morris water task.

We employed a computerized (virtual) Morris water task (VMWT) to measure place learning and cued-navigation in eight adolescent males (9.5-16.5 years old) diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Eight adolescent males matched for age and ethnicity with no history of prenatal alcohol exposure served as controls. Participants were trained to navigate to a hidden platform in a fixed location relative to a set of four conspicuous extramaze cues. After 20 hidden platform trials, a single no-platform probe trial was conducted, followed by 8 trials during which the platform was visible (cued-nav

The development and clinical trial of a Driving Simulator for the handicapped.

We developed a Virtual Reality Driving Simulator in order to safely evaluate and improve the driving ability of the handicapped. The Virtual Environment consists of 18 sections (e.g. a speed limited road, a strait road, a curved road, a left turn course, etc) and each section is linked naturally. For the interface of our driving simulator, an actual car was adapted for realism and then connected to a computer. We also equipped it with hand control driving devices especially adapted for the handicapped. A beam projector was used so that the subjects could see the virtual scene on a large screen

A novel application of computer-aided design and manufacturing for reduction cranioplasty.

Macrocephaly is a rare presentation of untreated hydrocephalus. In cases where medical management has failed, macrocephaly can be managed with reduction cranioplasty. Traditionally, reduction cranioplasty is highly dependent on intraoperative tailoring of bone segments to obtain the best possible result and involves high risks of associated severe blood loss and mortality. In this clinical report, we describe a patient with hydrocephalus macrocephaly treated with reduction cranioplasty with the innovative use of computer-aided design and manufacturing to reduce intraoperative risks and improve
