Non-conscious face recognition in patients with face agnosia.

Four patients with face agnosia, a condition in which there is a failure to recognize previously known faces or faces that ought to have been learned without difficulty, were studied with an experimental paradigm in which both overt (verbal self-report) and covert (electrodermal skin conductance response) probes of recognition were used. The results showed a striking dissociation between the two indices: (1) all 4 patients generated more frequent and significantly larger-amplitude skin conductance responses to familiar faces, as compared to unfamiliar ones. This outcome contrasts with the find

Visual discrimination and inhibitory control deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome: A pilot study using rodent touchscreen technology.

Several non-verbal cognitive and behavioral tests have been developed to assess learning deficits in humans with Down syndrome (DS). Here we used rodent touchscreen paradigms in adult male mice to investigate visual discrimination (VD) learning and inhibitory control in the Dp(16)1/Yey (C57BL/6J genetic background), Ts65Dn (mixed B6 X C3H genetic background) and Ts1Cje (C57BL/6J genetic background) mouse models of DS. Dp(16)1/Yey and Ts1Cje models did not exhibit motivation or learning deficits during early pre-training, however, Ts1Cje mice showed a significant learning delay after the introd

Auditory memory decrements, without dissimulation, among patients with major depressive disorder.

Questions have been raised about whether poor performance on memory tasks by individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) might be the result of poor or variable effort or disease-related disruption of neural circuits supporting memory functions. The present study examined performance on a measure of task engagement and on an auditory memory task among 45 patients with MDD (M age = 47.82, SD = 19.55) relative to 32 healthy controls (HC; M age = 51.03, SD = 22.09). One-hundred percent of HC and MDD volunteers performed above the threshold for adequate effort on a formal measure of task enga

[Sequential information processing in children with and without auditory processing disorder].

BACKGROUND: It is a controversial issue whether sequential processing in children with auditory processing disorders (APD) is a unimodal auditory impairment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Normal achieving controls (n=12; mean age: 101.1 months; SD 20.3) and children referred to clinical facilities for assessment including children with monosymptomatic APD (n=25; mean age: 90.8 months; SD 9.8), children with developmental language disorder (DLD]) + APD (n=11; mean age: 89.5 months; SD 14.9), children with dyslexia + APD (n=10; mean age: 113.8 months; SD 17.1) were compared using the subtest digit reca

Item recognition is less impaired than recall and associative recognition in a patient with selective hippocampal damage.

This article explores the recall, item recognition, and associative recognition memory of patient B.E., whose pattern of retrograde amnesia was reported by Kapur and Brooks (1999; Hippocampus 9:1-8). Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown that B.E. has bilateral damage restricted to the hippocampus. The structural damage he had sustained was accompanied by bilateral hypoperfusion of the temporal lobe, revealed by positron emission tomography (PET), and which single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) suggested was greater in the left than the right temporal lobe. B.E. sh

Validity and neuropsychological characterization of Asperger syndrome: convergence with nonverbal learning disabilities syndrome.

The authors investigated the validity of Asperger Syndrome (AS) by comparing the neuropsychological profiles in this condition and Higher-Functioning Autism (HFA). Diagnostic assignment followed a stringent procedure based on ICD-10 research criteria for the two disorders. The groups had comparable age and Full Scale IQ distributions. The groups differed significantly in 11 neuropsychological areas. The profile obtained for individuals with AS coincided closely with a cluster of neuropsychological assets and deficits captured by the term nonverbal learning disabilities, suggesting an empirical…

The Rehabilitation for Visual Cognitive Impairment due to Hippocampal Infarction: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Disturbances in the visual pathway cause visual cognitive impairment. There is a lack of information regarding the effect of rehabilitation on individuals affected by this condition. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions in this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an 87-year-old woman with hippocampal infarction. While the patient's ability to perform daily activities and engage in conversations was normal, she faced challenges at the execution stage, such as naming, constructing sentences, and copying. We diagn

Microscopic white matter changes in the cingulum contribute to memory impairment among older adults with obstructive sleep apnea in the memory clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in memory clinic patients and is associated with learning and memory deficits. In a … e OSA, alterations were observed in the cingulum and fornix. Cingulum changes were linked to poorer verbal learning and memory. DISCUSSION: OSA is associated with disrupted memory-related pathways. Cingulum changes are associated with memory performance in moderate and severe cases.

The cultural evolution of mind reading.

It is not just a manner of speaking: "Mind reading," or working out what others are thinking and feeling, is markedly similar to print reading. Both of these distinctly human skills recover meaning from signs, depend on dedicated cortical areas, are subject to genetically heritable disorders, show cultural variation around a universal core, and regulate how people behave. But when it comes to development, the evidence is conflicting. Some studies show that, like learning to read print, learning to read minds is a long, hard process that depends on tuition. Others indicate that even very young,

Children's school performance is not impaired by short-term administration of diphenhydramine or loratadine.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a second-generation H1 antihistamine produces less sedation in children and permits greater learning in a school setting than a classic antihistamine. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-three 8- to 10-year-old children who had histories of seasonal allergic rhinitis but had no symptoms at the time of the study were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: placebo, diphenhydramine, or loratadine. Medications were administered on 3 of 4 study days, twice 6 hours apart, while participants attended a laboratory school. Classroom testing at the e

Are mathematics disabilities due to a domain-general or a domain-specific working memory deficit?

The relationship between verbal and visual-spatial working memory and mathematical computation skill was examined in children and adults with and without disabilities in mathematics. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that, when partialing for the influence of reading ability, age, and gender, mathematical computation was better predicted by verbal than by visual-spatial working memory. Furthermore, the results showed that the relationship between mathematics ability and working memory were not significantly moderated by age but were stable across a broad age span. We concluded that, re

Workplace Violence in Indonesian Clinical Learning Environments: Cultural and Organisational Contexts Shaping Nursing Students' Experiences.

Workplace violence in clinical learning environments is increasingly recognised as a threat to nursing education and workforce sustainability, yet it is often understood as a series of isolated incidents rather than as a condition shaped by broader cultural and organisational forces. This study explored how workplace violence was experienced by nursing students, clinical nurses and clinical instructors in Indonesian hospital placements. Drawing on descriptive phenomenological accounts, the analysis shows how hierarchical relations, patient authority, collectivist expectations and gendered prof
