BACKGROUND: Abnormal vestibular function has been reported in patients with vestibular migraine (VM). However, it is unclear whether the proportion of patients with vestibular dysfunction differs between the diagnoses of VM and probable VM (PVM).
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 1736 patients who underwent cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential testing to air-conducted sound (ACS cVEMP), ocular VEMP testing to bone-conducted vibration (BCV oVEMP), and caloric testing. We used the diagnostic criteria for VM provided in the appendix of the International Classification of Heada

Seven patients with bilateral vestibular dysfunction were investigated with a new broad frequency oscillatory test. The vestibular stimulation was of two types: a pseudo-random oscillation in the frequency range 0.5-4 Hz and a sinusoidal frequency sweep from 0.5 to 3.5 Hz. Compensatory eye movements were recorded by EOG. Gain and phase values between eye and head movements were extracted using power spectral analysis technique. Two different visual conditions were used: 1) fixating a stationary target and /) fixating a moving target (visual suppression test). At high frequencies all patients s

PURPOSE: Military personnel and veterans exposed to blast overpressure waves frequently report vestibular symptoms, including dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Although blast exposure is known to disrupt vestibular function, how vestibular deficits develop over time, particularly at the level of vestibular afferent signaling, remains unclear.
METHODS: In this study, we used an ear-blast model to investigate the early injury responses and progression of vestibular deficits following a single, moderate-intensity blast exposure (20 PSI) in male and female Long-Evans rats. Vestibular function wa

The evoked response to repeated brief stimuli, such as clicks or short tone bursts, is used for clinical evaluation of the function of both the auditory and vestibular systems. One auditory response is a neural potential - the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) - recorded by surface electrodes on the head. The clinical analogue for testing the otolithic response to abrupt sounds and vibration is the myogenic potential recorded from tensed muscles - the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP). VEMPs have provided clinicians with a long sought-after tool - a simple, clinically realistic indic

CONCLUSIONS: We used a feedback method, based on a blood pressure manometer with inflatable cuff, to control the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) contraction. To obtain comparable left-right VEMP responses, it is necessary (1) to determine which cuff pressures on both sides yield identical mean rectified voltage (MRV) values of the SCM contraction and (2) to apply these cuff pressures during the VEMP test.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the SCM muscle contraction variability on the VEMP variables when applying the feedback method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects pushed with their ja

CONCLUSION: Testing of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) with head rotations (including head impulses) using the magnetic scleral search coil technique (SCT HHI) provides valuable additional diagnostic information in patients with persistent dizziness, oscillopsia or imbalance. It identifies high and low frequency/acceleration vestibular abnormalities that are frequently missed using other methods.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of SCT measurement of the horizontal VOR in the multidisciplinary neurotology clinic of a tertiary referral centre.

In a previous study we reported promising results for a new test to differentiate in vivo unilateral otolith functions. That study pointed to a need for further validation on known pathological cases. In this presentation we will detail the results gathered on a group of clinically verified vestibular defectives (verum) and a normal (control) group. The subjects in the verum group were former patients of the ENT clinic of the university hospital. These subjects had usually suffered from neurinoma of the VIIth cranial nerve or inner ear infections. All had reguired surgical intervention includi

In this paper data are presented from an experiment which provides evidence for the existence of a short latency, acoustically evoked potential of probable vestibular origin. The experiment was conducted in two phases using bone-conducted acoustic stimulation. In the first phase subjects were stimulated with 6-ms, 500-Hz tone bursts in order to obtain the threshold V(T) for vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). It was confirmed that the difference between bone-conducted auditory and acoustic vestibular thresholds was slightly over 30 dB. The estimated threshold was then used as a refer

The authors estimated the frequency of Ménière's disease occurrence among patients of Department of Otolaryngology, University School of Medicine in Lodz in years 1986-1995. The incidence of Ménière's disease was evaluated as 0.46% of all clinic patients and as 1.7% of cases which were treated for aural diseases. Diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical symptomatology, exact medical examination and audiologic tests. The function of vestibular organs was assessed with the help of caloric tests with ENG recordings. Ménière's disease incidence has been the subject of many epidemiological paper

BACKGROUND: Vestibular dysfunction causing imbalance affects c. 80% of acute hospitalized traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases. Poor balance recovery is linked to worse return-to-work rates and reduced longevity. We previously showed that white matter network disruption, particularly of right inferior longitudinal fasciculus, mediates the overlap between imbalance and impaired vestibular perception of self-motion (i.e., vestibular agnosia) in acute hospitalized TBI. However, there are no prior reports tracking the acute-longitudinal trajectory of objectively measured vestibular function for hosp
