Vestibular, olfactory, and vibratory responses of nucleus basalis prosencephali neurons in pigeons.

Evoked multiple unit responses were recorded through chronically implanted electrodes from the nucleus basalis prosencephali of the pigeon (Columba livia) upon vibratory stimulation of the beak-tip and airborne auditory stimulation, thus confirming earlier anatomical and physiological findings. Electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve led to similar short latency responses. A specific directional sensitivity to rotatory vestibular stimulation was observed. Pitch motions of the head in the downward direction evoked the most pronounced multi-unit responses. These results support the suggest

Augmentation by 4-aminopyridine of vestibulospinal free fall responses in chronic spinal-injured cats.

This study examines the effect of the potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on free fall responses (FFR) in the hindlimb muscles of chronically spinal injured cats. The thoracic spinal cord of 7 adult female cats was injured by a standardized contusion method. At 3-7 months post-injury the FFR in 6 hindlimb muscles was recorded electromyographically in each animal, under ketamine sedation. The normal short-latency response to a sudden drop was severely attenuated in all injured animals and practically undetectable in 2 cases. Within 15 min following intravenous administration of 1 m

European vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 4. Thresholds of perception of whole-body linear oscillation.

Thresholds for the detection of linear oscillatory motion at 0.3 Hz in the X, Y and Z body axes were determined during the flight of Spacelab-1 and on the ground pre- and post-flight, using the method of limits with a single staircase procedure. Pre-flight, Z axis thresholds (mean 0.077 ms-2) were significantly higher than X and Y thresholds (mean 0.029 ms-2). Measures obtained on three crew members in-flight exhibited thresholds greater, by a factor of 1.5-4.3, than those obtained pre-flight. Post-flight, two crew members had significantly elevated X and Y axis thresholds whereas the other tw

[Human tolerance to rotation at different levels of increased gravitation].

The effects of acceleration of different value (up to 2 g) on the level of motion sickness, vestibular and postural reactions to rotation were studied. The experiments were carried out in a centrifuge equipped with a cabin that could be mounted at a different distance from the axis of rotation. Three experimental runs were conducted with a rate of rotation of 15.3 and accelerations values of 1.09, 1.6 and 2.0 g. Vestibular stimulation was produced by head movements of a predetermined number. It was found that with increase in the acceleration value the level of motion sickness decreased and th

Menière's disease: morphological findings in eighth nerve and vestibular end organs.

37 patients with advanced Menière's disease were operated on by translabyrinthine 8th nerve neurectomy or middle fossa vestibular neurectomy. Cochlear and vestibular nerves, epithelia of the utricular macula and ampullar crista of horizontal canal were studied. All specimens were fairly well preserved and the microscopic studies suggested that there is no general deterioration of these structures even in long-standing, advanced Menière's disease, but some minor deviations from normal are present in individual cells.

[Acute isolated vestibular paralysis. A clinical and electronystagmographic follow-up study in 28 patients].

Twenty-eight patients with unilateral acute vestibular paralysis (vestibular neuronitis) were examined after a period of 4-140 months. Seventeen of these patients were examined by electronystagmography with caloric stimuli at 44 degrees, 30 degrees, 17 degrees and 0 degrees C. Most were free of subjective symptoms only one-third had slight unsteadiness after sudden head movement. Subjective symptoms were independent of the presence of permanent canal paralysis or partial recovery of caloric excitability. Spontaneous nystagmus of 3-6,6% intensities was found in 11 of 17 patients. The normal lim

The nystagmus threshold in turning test in different age groups and in patients suffering from otosclerosis.

The threshold of nystagmus during angular acceleration and deceleration was investigated in two series of healthy persons with an average age of 20 and 42 years and in series of otosclerotic patients with an average age of 42 years. It was shown that age as such does not influence the thresholds, but a lesion in the inner ear, such as otosclerosis, causes higher thresholds even in younger subjects.
