The authors studies bone mineral density (BMD) was studied by ultrasound densitometry of the calcaneus on an Achilles + device (Lunar, USA) and phosphorus and calcium metabolism in patients with vibration disease. The patients' age ranged from 41 to 61 years. A control group comprised 88 healthy males of the same age. Long-term exposure to systemic and local vibration causes a reduction in the mineral density of bony tissue in the presence of slightly enhanced bone resorption.

Data of analysis of the role of vibration in the development of hepatobiliary pathology in helicopter pilots are reported. Vibration was found to drastically deteriorate colloid-osmotic qualities of the bile and increase the lithogenesis risk. Exposure to vibration over 10 and more years of the flying career may instigate cholelithiasis. Dynamic USI with functional testing for early diagnostics and correction with ursodeoxycholic acid (ursosan) of disorders in the colloid-osmotic properties of the bile and can be proposed as one of the methods to prevent cholelithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare various effects on the hand-arm system of vibration exposure from a chipping hammer and a grinder with the same frequency weighted acceleration. Grip and push forces were measured and monitored during the exposure. Some disorders of the brain stem and spinal cord microcirculation were observed in male adult guinea pigs exposed to vertical vibration of frequency 40 Hz and amplitude 1 mm for 3 hours daily during 7, 14, 30 days. These changes after 7 days of vibration were seen as congestion with single small haemorrhages and after 14 days as diffuse spongiosis of the brain stem and spinal cord. After 30 days both congestion with haemorrhages and spongiosis were noted but the first predominated.

In previous experimental and clinical studies on aortic valvular stenosis it has been suggested that in addition to the degree of stenosis, other factors, such as the pathoanatomy of the valve and turbulence-induced vibrations, might be of importance. Using echocardiography, vibrations of the interventricular septum were demonstrated in six consecutive patients with congenital aortic stenosis. In comparable normal subjects no such vibrations could be seen. The clinical significance of ventricular wall vibrations has not yet been established.

The investigations were carried out on guniea pigs subjected to vibration of varying parameters and varying duration. Isotope method with 35-S-cysteine administered suboccipitally was used, and the investigated material included supraoptic nuclei and the pars nervosa of the hypophysis.
