BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Surgical resection for thymic epithelial tumors has traditionally been performed via a median sternotomy or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). In recent years, however, robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) has been increasingly adopted as a minimally invasive alternative, with a growing number of reports. This review summarizes the progress achieved to date and outlines future perspectives in robot-assisted thymectomy.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of single-port and two-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in patients with pneumothorax.
METHODS: Between June 2016 and December 2018, a total of 44 patients (39 males, 5 females; mean age 27.0±9.5 years; range, 15 to 60 years) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery due to the spontaneous pneumothorax in our center were retrospectively evaluated. The study population was divided into two groups as the single-port (n=29) and two-port (n=15) procedure according to the number of port entries applied during the operation.

Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is defined as the hyperinflation of pulmonary lobes due to obstruction of the flow of air via a known or unknown etiology, which causes pressure symptoms in the adjacent organs. A 36-year-old woman with no significant medical history was referred to our institution for evaluation of recurrent pneumothoraces. She had had approximately 16 right-sided pneumothoraces over the prior 3 years. Her pneumothoraces were accompanied by chest pain, and they all presented within 3 days of her menstrual period. She had had three pleurodeses over the prior 3 years. Additionally, she underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) exploration, and her diaphragm was reported as normal. She had had a lung biopsy done, which only revealed normal lung parenchyma.
