Optical coherence tomography-based topography determination of corneal grafts in eye bank cultivation.

Vision loss due to corneal injuries or diseases can be treated by transplantation of human corneal grafts (keratoplasty). However, quality assurance in retrieving and cultivating the tissue transplants is confined to visual and microbiological testing. To identify previous refractive surgery or morphological alterations, an automatic, noncontact, sterile screening procedure is required. Twenty-three corneal grafts have been measured in organ culture with a clinical spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer. Employing a biconic surface fit with 10 degrees of freedom, the radii of curvature

Electric cataract: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of electrically induced cataract in both eyes in a 12-year-old boy, after a high-voltage electric shock, is reported. He sustained skin burns on the neck, chest, abdomen, and inner left arm. The cataract developed first in the left eye and later on in the right eye. The child regained normal vision in both eyes after cataract extraction and aphakic correction with spectacles. The need for awareness of the possibility of this complication and screening of all cases of electrical injuries is stressed. The majority of cases respond well to surgery, but final visual acuity will depend on th

Necrotizing Herpetic Retinopathy: A Case of Delayed Acute Retinal Necrosis Presentation in a Patient With Uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus and Complications.

Necrotizing herpetic retinopathy is a term used to describe two similar yet different forms of retinopathy - acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and progressive outer retinal necrosis (PORN), which can both present similarly with eye pain and/or vision loss stemming from inflammatory and necrotic retinal changes caused by members of the Herpesviridae family. This case presentation involves a patient with ARN, which has a multifocal pathogenesis, creating diffuse necrosis that over time coalesces and increases the risk of rhegmatous retinal detachment. We report the case of a 56-year-old male with unc

Improved Multiscale Structural Mapping with Supervertex Vision Transformer for the Detection of Alzheimer's Disease Neurodegeneration.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) confirmation often relies on positron emission tomography (PET) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, which are costly and invasive. Consequently, structural MRI biomarkers such as cortical thickness (CT) are widely used for noninvasive AD screening. Multiscale structural mapping (MSSM) was recently proposed to integrate gray-white matter contrasts (GWCs) with CT from a single T1-weighted MRI (T1w) scan. Building on this framework, we propose MSSM+, together with surface supervertex mapping (SSVM) and a Supervertex Vision Transformer (SV-ViT). 3D T1w images from indiv

The Effect of Pupil Size on Cone Contrast Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Measuring contrast sensitivity for each of the three cone types separately allows for a more precise and clinically valuable assessment of color vision. This study examined how pupil size affects cone contrast sensitivity (CCS). METHODS: This study included 50 participants of equal gender. The mean age was 20.88 (±1.8) years. Using the ColorDx, a Landolt C stimulus of various sizes in an adaptive screening mode, we sequentially determined contrast sensitivity for long-, medium-, and short-wavelength stimuli. Two consecutive measurements were performed on participants, one with the

Predicting artificial visual field losses: A gaze-based inference study.

Visual field defects are a world-wide concern, and the proportion of the population experiencing vision loss is ever increasing. Macular degeneration and glaucoma are among the four leading causes of permanent vision loss. Identifying and characterizing visual field losses from gaze alone could prove crucial in the future for screening tests, rehabilitation therapies, and monitoring. In this experiment, 54 participants took part in a free-viewing task of visual scenes while experiencing artificial scotomas (central and peripheral) of varying radii in a gaze-contingent paradigm. We studied the

Clinical testing of accommodative facility: part III. Masked assessment of the relation between visual symptoms and binocular test results in school children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Accommodative facility is commonly assessed using +/- 2.00 lenses at 40 cm. Significant differences have been demonstrated on binocular facility testing between symptomatic and asymptomatic children; studies on adults have not replicated these results. We evaluate the relation between symptoms and binocular amplitude-scaled facility (equivalent stimulus for each subject based on individual amplitude). METHODS: Optometry students (N = 98) and school children IN= 152) participated in a vision screening. A 9-question standardized questionnaire quantified symptoms. Binocular accommoda…
