1. The mechanisms underlying gastrectomy osteopenia are not yet clear. The gastrectomy-associated cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency may favour osteopenia and skeletal fractures. Also, the exclusion of the duodenum from the food passage may contribute to gastrectomy osteopenia. To investigate this, rats were gastrectomized and the passage of nutrients restored either with the duodenum excluded (Roux Y) or included (Longmire). Sham-operated rats served as controls. In half of the rats in each gastrectomy group the serum B12 levels were normalized by parenteral administration of B12.2. Four mont

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in the elderly population and can cause severe complications. The use of certain medication has in previous studies been associated with vitamin B12 deficiency in the general population. To identify elderly patients at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency due to medication use, we evaluated the association between medication use and vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly population. METHODS: Hospitalized geriatric patients 65 years of age or over with a serum vitamin B12 measurement within one week of the admittance date were included. Patients were class

With a significant portion of the population adopting veganism and conflicting views among nutrition professionals regarding the necessity of vitamin B12 supplementation, this review aims to explore existing studies evaluating interventions through food supplementation. It focuses on the impact of vitamin B12 deficiency across different demographics. The present study seeks to understand how research has addressed the relationship between the rise in veganism and vitamin B12 deficiency over the past decade. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA flow diagram. Studies from 2010 to

BACKGROUND: Maternal nutritional deficiency is linked with several adverse outcomes in offspring but the link between maternal vitamin B12 levels and offspring schizophrenia remains unexplored.
METHODS: In this nationwide population-based nested case-control design, 1145 schizophrenia cases were born between 1987-1997 and diagnosed by 2017 and each case were matched with a control. Maternal vitamin B12 levels during the first and early second trimesters of pregnancy were measured using chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay from maternal sera. Conditional logistic regression was used to

The etiology of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is multifactorial. Although many acquired and genetic factors have been recognized as risk factors, hyperhomocysteinemia (hHcy) is independently associated with CVST. We describe three cases of CVST in this case series. All of them presented with headache. Two patients had papilledema and visual disturbances. On evaluation, there was CVST, and prothrombotic workup showed hHcy. In addition, two of them reported very low Vitamin B12 levels. All of them were treated with low-molecular-weight heparin followed by oral anticoagulation and Vitam

Vitamin B12 (B12), also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is a cofactor in DNA synthesis and is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, including the central nervous system. Those with a deficiency of B12 can present with peripheral neuropathy, pernicious anemia, or a cognitive disorder. Previous studies have revealed that a deficiency of B12 is associated with cognitive decline or Alzheimer disease. The data of 2991 people were evaluated from 2 years of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study, a nationwide multicenter survey. To assess cognitive function,

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent worldwide especially in vegetarian communities. Its deficiency in early childhood may result in serious neurological and cognitive deficits. It is important to know the prevalence among our infants and toddlers so that nutritional policy changes could be suggested in this regard.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the vitamin B12 status of apparently healthy Indian children between 6 and 23 months of age.
METHODS: Apparently healthy Indian children (n = 210), of age 6 to 23 months, attending pediatric outpatient department were recruited and samples obtain

The prevalence of a sub-clinical vitamin B12 deficiency in the vegetarians is high. Total serum vitamin B12 concentration alone does not reliably reflect vitamin B12 status. Holotranscobalamin (holo-TC) II is a bioactive B12 fraction promoting specific uptake of B12 by cells and the circulating concentration reflects the intake of B12, whereas total homocysteine (tHcy) indicates the metabolic ability. In this study, we investigated the diagnostic value of circulating holo-TC, B12, folate and homocysteine in vegetarians who were at risk of B12 deficiency. B12-related biomarkers were measured in

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) in dogs is a gastrointestinal condition leading to a severe impairment of nutrient absorption. The disease is frequently associated with vitamin disturbances especially regarding cobalamin and folate. Dogs with EPI need daily expensive supportive treatment. The aim of the present study was to identify prognostic factors for EPI in dogs, through a long-term survival study of 299 dogs, taking into account epidemiological, clinical, biological and therapeutic data, with particular emphasis on serum cobalamin and folate concentration. The prevalence of low s

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A high prevalence of vitamin B-12 (B-12) deficiency among young women of South Asian origin predisposes to significant health risks for these women and their future offspring. Vegetarian or low-meat based dietary practices contribute to B-12 deficiency. This study validated a nutrient-specific, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (B12FFQ), developed to estimate dietary B-12 intake in South Asian women.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The B12FFQ was developed, then tested in 60 apparently healthy South Asian women aged 18-50 years, living in Auckland, New Zealan

This study aimed at assessing the relationship between thrombosis, hyperhomocysteinemia and vitamin B12 deficiency using a case-control study carried out in 326 patients with thrombosis (case group) and 351 patients from the same hospital (control group). Apart from the classic risk factors, a number of hematological variables were evaluated, including serum vitamin B12 (B12), red cell folate (RCF), and serum homocysteine (Hcy). An evaluation of serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) and a clinical study were carried out to investigate B12 pathology. Results of univariate analysis demonstrated decreas
