Thyroarytenoid muscle activity and infraglottic aspect of canine vocal fold vibration.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of contraction of the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle on the location of the mucosal upheaval (MU) and to estimate the location of the MU in relation to the histologic structure of the vocal fold. BACKGROUND: The MU is a small mucosal ridge arising on the lower surface of the vocal fold during phonation and is thought to be the lower border of the vibrating structure. METHODS: Vibrations were elicited under three conditions: during bilateral TA muscle contraction, without TA muscle stimulation, and during vocal fold lengthening. The vibrations were recorded f

Evaluation of partial arytenoidectomy as a treatment for equine laryngeal hemiplegia.

The efficacy of partial arytenoidectomy was assessed in 6 Standardbred horses, with surgically induced laryngeal hemiplegia, at rest (Period A) and during exercise at speeds corresponding to maximum heart rate (Period C) and 75% of maximum heart rate (Period B). Peak expiratory and inspiratory airflow rate (PEF and PIF), and expiratory and inspiratory transupper airway pressure (PUE and PUI) were measured and expiratory and inspiratory impedance (ZE and ZI) were calculated. Simultaneously, tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) were acquired using a respiratory function computer. Indices de

Preferential denervation of the adductor muscles of the equine larynx. II: Nerve pathology.

The terminal branches of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) of three normal ponies and six horses with sub-clinical laryngeal disease were examined qualitatively and quantitatively in an attempt to explain the preferential denervation of the laryngeal adductor muscles in the neuropathy of idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia (ILH). The myelinated fibre spectra of all the motor nerve fibres in the left and right abductor and adductor branches of the RLN in three normal ponies were measured. The density of myelinated fibres was also calculated. There was no significant difference between the larger

An accurate method of Teflon injection using functional phonosurgery.

A technique for Teflon injection is described that allows the laryngologist to assess vocal fold vibration during general anesthesia. A tracheostomy tube fitted with a rostral air line allows translaryngeal airflow. During endoscopy with a bivalved laryngoscope, the cords are approximated manually. Vocal fold vibration is produced with the cords adducted. The precise site of defects in glottic closure is clearly seen and corrected with Teflon injection. In cases where standard Teflon injection has failed, utilization of this method has allowed substantial voice improvement. The ability to asse

Long-term implantation of a system of electrical stimulation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles in dogs.

Electrical stimulation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, synchronized with inspiration, was achieved in dogs utilizing a radio frequency stimulus triggered by a chest wall expansion transducer. This system brings about abduction of the paralyzed vocal cord for the entire duration of inspiration, which allows a normal flow of air through the larynx. The implantable part of that system was tested successfully in chronic experiments (up to 11 months) in dogs with experimental paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We feel that the system may be suitable for pacing the paralyzed human l

Respiratory rhythmically regulated electrical stimulation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles.

Electrical stimulation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, synchronized with inspiration, was achieved in dogs, utilizing a radio frequency stimulus triggered by a chest wall expansion transducer. This system brings about the abduction of the paralyzed vocal cord for the entire duration of inspiration, which allows a normal flow of air through the larynx. The stimulation system could be tested successfully in actual experiments in dogs with artificial paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Its effectiveness could be proved through observation of the vocal cord movements (photographic

Oxytocin receptors in the Magel2 mouse model of autism: Specific region, age, sex and oxytocin treatment effects.

The neurohormone oxytocin (OXT) has been implicated in the regulation of social behavior and is intensively investigated as a potential therapeutic treatment in neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by social deficits. In the Magel2-knockout (KO) mouse, a model of Schaaf-Yang Syndrome, an early postnatal administration of OXT rescued autistic-like behavior and cognition at adulthood, making this model relevant for understanding the actions of OXT in (re)programming postnatal brain development. The oxytocin receptor (OXTR), the main brain target of OXT, was dysregulated in the hippocampus

Persistent Auditory Nerve Damage Following Kainic Acid Excitotoxicity in the Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Permanent loss of auditory nerve (AN) fibers occurs with increasing age and sound overexposure, sometimes without hair cell damage or associated audiometric threshold elevation. Rodent studies suggest effects of AN damage on central processing and behavior, but these species have limited capacity to discriminate low-frequency speech-like sounds. Here, we introduce a new animal model of AN damage in an avian communication specialist, the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The budgerigar is a vocal learner and speech mimic with sensitive low-frequency hearing and human-like behavioral sensiti

Elevated paternal glucocorticoid exposure alters the small noncoding RNA profile in sperm and modifies anxiety and depressive phenotypes in the offspring.

Recent studies have suggested that physiological and behavioral traits may be transgenerationally inherited through the paternal lineage, possibly via non-genomic signals derived from the sperm. To investigate how paternal stress might influence offspring behavioral phenotypes, a model of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation was used. Male breeders were administered water supplemented with corticosterone (CORT) for 4 weeks before mating with untreated female mice. Female, but not male, F1 offspring of CORT-treated fathers displayed altered fear extinction at 2 weeks of age.

Clinical and histologic evaluation of an indwelling, inflatable, long-term laryngeal stent in the canine model.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was assessment of a revolutionary approach to laryngeal stenting. A radically designed, atraumatic, inflatable, low-pressure, high-volume, endoscopically inserted laryngeal stent for effective intralaryngeal support or long-term prevention of aspiration was prospectively evaluated in a canine model to reveal any significant short- and long-term anatomic and functional changes in the larynx. METHODS: A self-sustaining, tube-free, long-term flap tracheostomy was performed in 14 dogs, followed by endoscopic laryngeal stent insertion. The stents were inflated, and their intral

How should the psychological well-being of zoo elephants be objectively investigated?

Animal welfare (sometimes termed "well-being") is about feelings - states such as "suffering" or "contentment" that we can infer but cannot measure directly. Welfare indices have been developed from two main sources: studies of suffering humans, and of research animals deliberately subjected to challenges known to affect emotional state. We briefly review the resulting indices here, and discuss how well they are understood for elephants, since objective welfare assessment should play a central role in evidence-based elephant management. We cover behavioral and cognitive responses (approach/avo

Sensitivity of the human temporal voice areas to nonhuman primate vocalizations.

In recent years, research on voice processing in the human brain, particularly the study of temporal voice areas (TVAs), was dedicated almost exclusively to conspecific vocalizations. To characterize commonalities and differences regarding primate vocalization representations in the human brain, the inclusion of closely related nonhuman primates, namely chimpanzees and bonobos, is needed. We hypothesized that neural commonalities would depend on both phylogenetic and acoustic proximities, with chimpanzees ranking closest to Homo. Presenting human participants (N = 23) with the vocalizations of

Hearing sensitivity: An underlying mechanism for niche differentiation in gleaning bats.

Tropical ecosystems are known for high species diversity. Adaptations permitting niche differentiation enable species to coexist. Historically, research focused primarily on morphological and behavioral adaptations for foraging, roosting, and other basic ecological factors. Another important factor, however, is differences in sensory capabilities. So far, studies mainly have focused on the output of behavioral strategies of predators and their prey preference. Understanding the coexistence of different foraging strategies, however, requires understanding underlying cognitive and neural mechani

Foxp2 regulates anatomical features that may be relevant for vocal behaviors and bipedal locomotion.

Fundamental human traits, such as language and bipedalism, are associated with a range of anatomical adaptations in craniofacial shaping and skeletal remodeling. However, it is unclear how such morphological features arose during hominin evolution. FOXP2 is a brain-expressed transcription factor implicated in a rare disorder involving speech apraxia and language impairments. Analysis of its evolutionary history suggests that this gene may have contributed to the emergence of proficient spoken language. In the present study, through analyses of skeleton-specific knockout mice, we identified rol

Of hissing snakes and angry voices: human infants are differentially responsive to evolutionary fear-relevant sounds.

Adult humans demonstrate differential processing of stimuli that were recurrent threats to safety and survival throughout evolutionary history. Recent studies suggest that differential processing of evolutionarily ancient threats occurs in human infants, leading to the proposal of an inborn mechanism for rapid identification of, and response to, evolutionary fear-relevant stimuli. The current study provides novel data in support of this proposal, showing for the first time that human infants differentially process evolutionary threats presented in the auditory modality. Sixty-one 9-month-olds
