Investigation of impact of split treatment on finished water quality for the Ames water treatment plant.

In response to limited carbon dioxide availability and increasing costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, an investigation into split treatment was performed. A 2020 pilot study showed that a 5% raw water bypass and target caustic alkalinity range of 26-36 mg/L as CaCO3 resulted in 25% and 7% carbon dioxide and lime savings, respectively. Considering this promising outcome, the potential for scaling and corrosion within the plant was evaluated during a subsequent split treatment trial in this study. Mild steel scale coupons were assessed for scaling and corrosion at four different treatment condit

Unveiling p-phenylenediamine rubber antioxidants as precursors of disinfection byproducts: Kinetics, formation, and toxicity.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water represent a significant public health concern. The contribution of non-natural organic matter compounds, such as rubber antioxidants, as DBP precursors has not been unveiled. This study investigated the degradation of four commonly consumed p-phenylenediamine (PPD) rubber antioxidants under chlorination and chloramination, evaluating their roles as DBP precursors. Results showed that PPDs degraded rapidly in both disinfection processes, with chlorine exhibiting a higher reactivity (59.38 - 139.42 M-1s-1) than chloramine (0.69 - 1.36 M-1s-1). Th

Tuning the thermodynamic and kinetic performance of Fenton process - effects of dissolved anions/gases and temperature.

Inorganic anions such as chloride (Cl-), nitrate (NO3-), sulfate (SO42-), carbonate (CO32-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO4-), fluoride (F-) are ubiquitous in water matrices, play a significant role in the degradation of organic pollutants by Fenton process. In the present study, the performance of Fenton process in the presence of these anions was studied using phenol as a model compound along with the underlying mechanism and their tolerance limit. The presence of these anions affects the rate constant of the Fenton process and decreases in the following order, ClO4--NO3--S

Making waves: Overcoming toxicity and deactivation challenges in polymerization-based wastewater treatment.

Polymerization-based oxidation processes (PBOP) present a promising alternative to chemical and energy-intensive advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removing emerging pollutants in water treatment. By reducing oxidant consumption and minimizing carbon emissions, PBOP offers a more sustainable solution. However, the polymerization products generated in these processes pose significant sustainability challenges, including potential toxicity and catalyst deactivation. Firstly, the polymeric products formed during PBOP exhibit increased hydrophobicity (higher Kow), which correlates strongly wi

Iron oxide-MXene-based composite for the removal of copper ions from wastewater.

The present work primarily aims to evaluate the adsorption properties of MXene and its nanocomposite, Fe3O4@MXene, for removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets were combined with Fe3O4 nanoparticles through a hydrothermal synthesis process to create the Fe3O4@MXene nanocomposite. Characterization revealed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles self-assembled onto MXene sheets, forming a structure that enhanced the 2D structure of MXene, with nanoparticles uniformly distributed throughout the nanosheet network. Performance experiments demonstrated that Fe3O4

Moderate activation and mutual promotion of aluminum-iron covalent-bond coagulant with K2FeO4 for enhanced organic arsenic removal: Selective truncation-repolymerization of Fe(Ⅳ)/Fe(Ⅴ) and enhanced coagulation.

Ferrate (K2FeO4) enhanced organic arsenic removal when combined with Al/Fe coagulants. However, coagulants induced K2FeO4 activation was often suboptimal (too fast/slow), and hydrolysis products underutilized complexation sites. Optimizing this synergy was key for efficient organic arsenic oxidation and real-time capture of products, but its moderate activation mechanism remained unclear. This study explored moderate activation mechanism of covalent-bond coagulants (better stability and bridging than ionic Al/Fe salts) with K2FeO4 for enhanced organic arsenic removal. The results demonstrated

Efficient phosphonate degradation by Ti4O7 electrode under realistic conditions: Key contribution of HOCl and long-term stability.

Using phosphorus-containing scale inhibitors (i.e., phosphonates) in cooling water poses a significant challenge to water pollution and eutrophication during discharge. Here we report an efficient electrochemical oxidation (EO) process based on a low-cost titanium suboxide (Ti4O7) inert anode. We found that ubiquitous chloride ions (Cl-) in cooling water significantly promoted the transformation of methylene phosphonic acid (NTMP, a representative phosphonate) into orthophosphate. In the Cl--Ti4O7-AO system, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the primary reactive species responsible for the sequentia

Degradation of Indomethacin in Wastewater: Removal with Sodium Hypochlorite and Analysis of Degradation Byproducts.

Over the years, the frequent and continuous use of drugs has led to a high presence of emerging micropollutants in wastewater, increasing environmental and health concerns. Among these chemicals, Indomethacin (IND), a widely used anti-inflammatory drug, has been detected up to 150 ng/L in water bodies. Its presence in aquatic environments causes increasing concerns due to its high persistence, limited biodegradability, and resistance to conventional treatment processes. This study examined the degradation of IND via oxidation with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and the characterization of the deg

Chromium removal by biochar/nanoparticulate iron oxide mineral composites: mechanistic insights and performance under batch and column systems.

The overarching aim of the current study was to synthesize nanoparticulate iron oxides (NP-FeOx; nano-magnetite (n-Mg), nano-goethite (n-Gh), nano-ferrihydrite (n-Fh), nano-hematite (n-Ht)) and develop rice husk biochar/NP-FeOx-based composites (BC/NP-FeOx) to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from contaminated water. Batch sorption experiments revealed that Cr removal efficiency was in the order: n-Gh (97.5%) > n-Mg (95.8%) > n-Fh (94.1%) > n-Ht (79.5%) at pH 7.0, sorbent dose of 0.5 g L-1 and Co = 12 mg L-1. Desorption studies showed the reusability of n-Gh and n-Mg over three cycles (65%-

Regulated 1-2 Carbon Disinfection Byproducts do not Correlate with Cytotoxicity with Increasing Disinfectant Contact Time During Chlorination, Chlorination Followed by Chloramination or Granular Activated Carbon Followed by Chlorination.

Regulations typically use four trihalomethanes (THM4) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5) as metrics of consumer exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and their chronic health risks. Their use as exposure metrics assumes that their concentrations correlate with DBP-associated toxicity. For a chlorine-disinfected surface water, this study demonstrates that increasing chlorine contact time from 1 to 7 days was associated with a 62-76% increase in THM4 and HAA5 but a 40-47% decrease in total cytotoxicity. Thus, the use of THM4 and HAA5 may divert regulatory attention away from the low water age

Cellulose-based underwater superoleophobic coatings with robust anti-viscous oil-fouling property for complex oily wastewater remediation.

Underwater superoleophobic coatings, known for their anti-oil-fouling properties, have garnered significant interest in the context of oily wastewater remediation. However, these coatings encounter challenges in preventing viscous oil contamination and structural damage, and easily become ineffective when treating crude oil/water pollutants. Additionally, the non-renewable and non-biodegradable components pose a huge risk to environmental safety and sustainable development. Herein, a cellulose-based coating that combines robust underwater superoleophobicity with anti-viscous oil-fouling charac

Aquifer pollution by metal-antibiotic complexes: Origins, transport dynamics, and ecological impacts.

Aquifer pollution by metal-antibiotic complexes is a rising environmental and public health concern owing to their enhanced mobility and persistence in groundwater. The purpose of this review is to examine the origins, transport dynamics, and ecological impacts of complexes formed through interactions between metal ions and antibiotics in agricultural runoff, pharmaceutical effluents, and wastewater discharge. Metal-antibiotic complexes are more resistant to degradation and are more soluble than their components. This complicates the conventional water purification efforts. These complexes dis…

Application of a water-energy-carbon coupling index to evaluate the long-term operational stability of the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic-membrane bioreactor (A2/O-MBR) process under the influence of rainstorms.

In the context of global climate change, sudden rainstorms and typhoons induce fluctuations in hydraulic shocks to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in coastal areas, causing two challenges of stable effluent quality and low-carbon operation. We established a quantitative evaluation method for resistance of wastewater treatment processes to hydraulic shocks based on the water-energy-carbon nexus using operational data from a WWTP in southeast coastal China from July 2018 to December 2022. The effects of hydraulic shocks on the operational stability of the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic-membrane biore

Managing PFAS exhausted Ion-exchange resins through effective regeneration/electrochemical process.

This study proposes an integrated approach that combines ion-exchange (IX) and electrochemical technologies to tackle problems associated with PFAS contamination. Our investigation centers on evaluating the recovery and efficiency of IX/electrochemical systems in the presence of five different salts, spanning dosages from 0.1 % to 8 %. The outcomes reveal a slight superiority for NaCl within the regeneration system, with sulfate and bicarbonate also showing comparable efficacy. Notably, the introduction of chloride ion (Cl-) into the electrochemical system results in substantial generation of

Quantitative structure-activity relationships for the reaction kinetics of trace organic contaminants with one-electron oxidants.

Understanding the reactivity between trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) and radicals involved in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is necessary for a good process design, but the experimentally determined rate constants (k values) are not sufficient for numerous artificial TrOCs. Thus, the development of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for predicting k values may be an effective way to address this limitation. In this work, we developed QSARs for the reactions of TrOCs with AOP-related one-electron oxidants. Specifically, 15 QSARs using Hammett constants and 8 cross-cor
