BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) transplantation is a novel method transplantation method that carries a heightened risk of infection caused by the use of high immunosuppressant doses. This elevated risk is particularly concerning for viral infections, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the BK virus (BKV) increases. Herein, we present a case where high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) was effective in treating viral infections after transplantation.
METHODS: A 41-year-old man underwent an ABOi transplantation. The initial isoagglutinin titer was 1:32. The patient received 200 mg of ri

A 19-year-old male with therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation with reduced-intensity conditioning from his HLA-identical sibling whose ABO blood type exhibited major incompatibility with the patient. After post-transplantation 1 month, chimerism analysis of the bone marrow revealed mixed chimerism with 30% of recipient cells, and after post-transplantation 3 months, complete remission was maintained; however, recipient granulocytes were elevated up to 50% per the chimerism analysis. Next, pancytopenia developed following the rapid discontinua

Apheresis is an important treatment modality for the removal of pathologic antibodies and circulating proteins in kidney transplantation. The use of apheresis has been shown to be a necessary preconditioning component in ABO incompatible kidney transplant. Removal of pathologic anti-A and anti-B antibodies has been accomplished with a variety of apheresis modalities including plasma exchange, fractional plasma exchange, and immunoabsorption techniques. Using these modalities in conjunction with potent modern immunosuppression, ABO incompatible kidney transplants have achieved graft and patient

Rhesus macaques are the most common nonhuman primate model organism used in biomedical research. Their increasingly frequent use as subjects in studies involving transplantation requires that blood and other tissue antigens of donors and recipients be compatible. We report here an easy and rapid multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to determine the ABO blood group phenotypes of rhesus macaques that can be performed with only small amounts of DNA. We phenotyped 78 individuals and found this species to exhibit the A, B and AB phenotypes in frequencies that vary by geographic region. The pro

ABO blood group compatibility has been regarded as an essential prerequisite for successful adult living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Novel strategies for overcoming the ABO blood group barrier, however, have markedly improved the results of ABO-incompatible (ABOi) LDLT. We describe our strategies for dual graft LDLT to cope with ABO-incompatibility and small-for-size graft syndrome in 3 patients who underwent dual graft LDLT with ABOi and ABO-compatible (ABOc) grafts. One patient received a modified right lobe graft from an ABOi living donor and a left lateral section graft from an ABO

OBJECTIVE: Direct antibody titer-positive, blood group A or B neonates who are born to group O mothers may be at risk for hemolysis and hyperbilirubinemia. Immunoglobulin G1 and immunoglobulin G3 subclasses are associated with increased hemolysis relative to immunoglobulin G2 and immunoglobulin G4. We investigated whether identification of immunoglobulin G subclass 1 or 3 may be predictive of hemolysis and hyperbilirubinemia.
METHODS: Direct antibody titer-positive, blood group A and B neonates born to group O mothers were tested for the presence of immunoglobulin G subclasses 1 and 3 in umbi

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of ABO mismatch on clinical characteristics in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical courses of 148 recipients of allo-HSCT from ABO-incompatible donors, of whom 85 ABO-compatible recipients were used as control group.
RESULTS: In ABO major incompatible group, the time of erythrocyte recovery after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was delayed and more RBC transfusions were required as compared with ABO major incompatible peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). The inciden

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a human pathogen that causes chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers. Epidemiological studies demonstrated that individuals who are blood group 0 positive or represent non-secretors of their blood group antigens are more likely to develop peptic ulcers. The Lewis(b) blood group antigen has been reported to mediate the attachment of H. pylori to human gastric mucosa. The aim of this study was to examine the interrelation between Le(a-b+) phenotype, blood group 0, H. pylori infection, and peptic ulcer occurrence.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study population consiste

Since blood group B end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have less access to donor kidneys and a higher minority composition than any other blood group, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) approved a voluntary national kidney allocation variance to allow organ procurement organizations (OPOs) to preferentially allocate A2 and A2B kidneys to B candidates. The Midwest Transplant Network OPO has preferentially allocated and transplanted kidneys from blood group A2 and A2B donors to our blood group B waiting list candidates for more than 7 years to increase access to kidneys for the B c

Plasmapheresis therapies such as plasma exchange (PE), double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP), or immunoadsorption plasmapheresis (IAPP) have become therapeutic tools in critical care. PE or DFPP are limited by their non- or semiselective removal of all plasma components. Replacement fluids such as fresh frozen plasma and albumin are necessary during PE or DFPP. There is the risk of infection and allergic reactions whenever such fluids are used. On the other hand, IAPP is superior to PE and DFPP because it does not require any replacement fluid. There has been development of many adsorbent co

20 specimens of normal pleural mesothelium were investigated with six lectins using isolated cells and tissue specimens as well as two different fixation techniques (glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde) and 10 monoclonal antibodies (MAb) on cytologic preparations only. Lectin binding sites for ConA, WGA, and PNA were present in all cases, whereas binding sites for the lectins HPA, SBA, and UEA-I could never be found. There was no staining difference with the two preparation and fixation techniques proving that they may be used to compare directly histologic and cytologic studies. Ten of fourteen h

The A, B, O (H) blood group antigens (BGA) are glycolipids present in the plasma membranes of many different epithelial cells. Alterations in BGA expression have been described in malignant tumors and premalignant lesions. We have studied ABO (H) BGA expression in paraffin sections of gastric specimens using immunofluorescence techniques with monoclonal antibodies. 102 patients were studied. 15 with normal mucosa (NM); 16 with duodenal ulcer (DU); 23 with gastric ulcer (GU); 11 with pernicious anaemia (PA) and 37 with adenocarcinoma (AC). The expression of BGA in normal gastric mucosa is detec

The linkage between the dominantly inherited Dystrophia myotonica and ABH-Secretor locus is well known. It has been used as a genetic marker for the early detection of heterozygous patients. Genetic counselling, however, requires exact knowledge of the gene combination. 25 persons from a special ambulance, patients and their advice seeking relatives, were examined for ABH, Lewis, Kidd, and Lutheran blood groups. Secretor test was performed from saliva. In 42% of the patients the combination of Dystrophia myotonica to the (Se) or (se) allele could not be exactly determined, nor in any of their

An unusual IgG complement-binding antibody was observed in a 64-year-old man prior to surgery. This antibody was detectable by the indirect antiglobulin test when the red cells were suspended in saline, but not when they were suspended in acid citrate dextrose or albumin solutions. Positive reactions were obtained with the patient's own red cells and with the cells of all donors tested. In vivo chromium survival studies showed that donor cells and patient cells, when suspended in saline, had 1-hour survivals of 32 and 46%, respectively. In contrast, donor and patient cells suspended in ACD sol

Trypsinized human group O erythrocytes were found to be a suitable alternative to gander cells in hemagglutination (HA) and hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) tests for Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus. In the HAI test, no cross-reactions against JE virus were observed with immune sera containing antibody to taxonomically related or unrelated viruses, with mouse brain antigen, or with nonantibody serum inhibitors; specific antibody rise could be detected in an immunized rabbit. Gander and trypsinized human group O cells gave comparable titers in the HAI test, but the latter were preferable sinc

BACKGROUND: After allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) transplantation, a patient developed a severe hemolytic transfusion reaction due to passenger lymphocyte syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old woman with secondary acute myeloid leukemia transforming from a myelodysplastic syndrome received an ABO-compatible PBPC graft from her HLA-identical sister. For prophylaxis of GVHD, the patient was treated with cyclosporine and methotrexate. Eighteen days after the transplant, the patient experienced a severe hemolytic transfusion reaction due to an alloantibody (anti-Jk(a)) produced
