The management of osteoporosis in real-world clinical practice is highly heterogeneous, reflecting the complexity and variability inherent in therapeutic decision-making. Although artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools have been developed to support diagnosis, limited research has investigated their potential to elucidate the rationale underlying treatment choices. This study applied explainable machine learning to replicate and interpret pharmacological treatment decisions made by two board-certified osteoporosis specialists. We retrospectively analyzed 1481 patients who underwent dual-ener

INTRODUCTION: To diagnose osteoporosis, assess the risk of fragility fracture, and determine the necessity for treatment, bone mineral density (BMD) is mostly measured from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a gold standard. Due to the limited resources of DXA, we proposed the deep learning models to screen for osteoporosis and measure its accuracy on osteoporosis detection from lumbar spine radiographs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The models were developed from the training data set (2244 anteroposterior and 2368 lateral lumbar spine radiographs). We categorized patients into two groups ba

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer (PCa) is associated with an increased fracture risk. However, studies on the prevalence of low areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and vertebral fractures (VFs) at the initiation of ADT and data on bone microarchitecture and strength are scarce. The aims of this study were 1) to evaluate bone microarchitecture and strength in men with PCa at the initiation of ADT in a real-world cohort as compared to normative data, and 2) to investigate whether the presence of VF at the initiation of ADT is associated with bone microarchitecture and strength

INTRODUCTION: Whereas hypergonadotropic hypogonadism is incriminated for poor bone mass in adults with Turner syndrome (TS), studies are limited on bone mass acquisition in pubertal girls with this condition. In previous studies reporting low bone mass in pubertal girls with TS, the bone-mineral-density (BMD) was not adjusted for height, a major determinant of BMD in this group. The present study was designed to address this knowledge gap by looking at the effect of height-adjustment on BMD in pre-pubertal girls with TS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty pre-pubertal girls with TS aged 12-18 year

Osteoporosis, a bone disease characterized by decreased bone mineral density (BMD) resulting in decreased mechanical strength and an increased fracture risk, remains poorly understood in children. Herein, we developed/validated a deep learning-based model to predict pediatric BMD using plain spine radiographs. Using a two-stage model, Yolov8 was applied for vertebral body detection to predict BMD values using a regression model based on ResNet-18, from which a low-BMD group was classified based on Z-scores of predicted BMD. Patients aged 10-20-years who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiomet

Background/AimsData integrity in multicenter and longitudinal studies requires implementation of standardized reproducible methods throughout the data collection, analysis, and reporting process. This requirement is heightened when results are shared with participants that may influence health care decisions. A quality assurance plan provides a framework for ongoing monitoring and mitigation strategies when errors occur.MethodsThe Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (1983-1993) and its follow-up study, the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (1994-present), have chara

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and bone mineral density (BMD) have shown a controversial link in some studies. This research aims to study their association in males over 50 and postmenopausal females using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. Postmenopausal females and males over 50 were included in the study. MetS was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. BMD values were measured at the thoracic spine, lumbar spine, and pelvis as the primary outcome. Weighted multivariate general linear models have been employed to e

BACKGROUND: Individuals with high systemic bone mineral density (BMD) may have an increased risk of incident knee osteoarthritis (OA). Besides that, radiographic osteophytes are strongly associated with BMD. Because of these reasons, the aim of the study was to investigate the possible association between radiological subchondral bone cyst (SBC) grade and systemic BMD and vitamin D status in the postmenopausal female patients with knee OA in a crosss-sectional study.
METHODS: This study included of 48 osteoporosis treatment-free postmenopausal patients diagnosed with symptomatic medial compar

The important trace elements, copper and selenium, have diverse effects on human health. As well as other important roles in living tissues, these trace elements are toxic at high levels but are key constituents of various enzymes and proteins essential for maintaining physiological health. However, links between dietary intakes of these elements, particularly copper, and bone mineral density (BMD) in humans remain uncertain. This study aimed to investigate whether dietary intakes of copper and selenium are associated with BMD in women. Dietary intakes of copper and selenium were assessed for

BACKGROUND: The proximal humerus, a common site for osteoporotic fractures, is frequently overlooked in osteoporosis evaluations. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the conventional bone mineral density (BMD) measurement (at the lumbar spine and femur) and the BMD measurement at both proximal humeri (the asymptomatic side and the side with a rotator cuff tear [RCT]) in patients with unilateral RCT. Furthermore, we investigated clinical features indicative of osteoporosis in RCT patients and assessed the utility of proximal humerus BMD measurements.
METHODS: From April 2020

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) receptor signalling is important for skeletal development. The FGF19 subfamily which includes FGF19 and FGF21 are involved in bone metabolism, although their effects on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone strength remain unclear. To further characterise the influence of these two factors on the skeleton, we studied the association between circulating concentrations of FGF19 and 21 with BMD and parameters of hip geometry and strength in post-menopausal osteoporosis (PMO). The study cohort consisted of 374 women aged (mean [SD]) 68.7[12.3] years with PMO. FGF19 and

PURPOSE: One or more vertebrae are sometimes excluded from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) analysis if the bone mineral density (BMD) T-score estimates are not consistent with the other lumbar vertebrae BMD T-score estimates. The goal of this study was to build a machine learning framework to identify which vertebrae would be excluded from DXA analysis based on the computed tomography (CT) attenuation of the vertebrae.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 995 patients (69.0% female) aged 50 years or greater with CT scans of the abdomen/pelvis and DXA within 1 year of each other. Volumetric

Several techniques exist to measure fat-free mass (FFM). Accordingly, this study is based on data from our recent trial comparing the sensitivity of the main field methods available with that of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as reference and analyzing the cross-sectional accuracy of these field methods in recreationally resistance-trained males. We hypothesized that the use of these techniques would lead to varying estimates of FFM compared with DXA. Participants (N = 23; 21.4 ± 3.3 years) completed a 10-week resistance training plus diet intervention designed to optimize hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Body mass index (BMI) does not directly measure adiposity, whereas dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides valid direct estimates of adiposity. Therefore, this study evaluated usefulness of BMI as a measure of adiposity in serum metabolomics studies.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of 202 women aged 25 to 29 years in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children Follow-Up Study. Heights and weights were measured, and body composition was quantified using clinical DXA protocols. Serum metabolomic profiling was performed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spe

This paper aims to elaborate a decision tree for the early detection of adolescent swimmers at risk of presenting low bone mineral density (BMD), based on easily measurable fitness and performance variables. The BMD of 78 adolescent swimmers was determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans at the hip and subtotal body. The participants also underwent physical fitness (muscular strength, speed, and cardiovascular endurance) and swimming performance assessments. A gradient-boosting machine regression tree was built to predict the BMD of the swimmers and to further develop a simp

Due to disturbances in hormones and long-term glucocorticoid replacement therapy (GRT), congenital adrenocortical hyperplasia (CAH) patients are at risk of impaired bone structure and metabolism. This cross-sectional, case-control study aims to investigate for the first time bone microarchitecture features in 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD; N = 38) and 17α-hydroxylase deficiency (17OHD; N = 16) patients using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) by matching the same sex and similar age [21OHD vs. control: 29.5 (24.0-34.3) vs. 29.6 (25.9-35.2) years; 17OHD vs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) and radiographic and clinical outcomes of patients with varus knee osteoarthritis treated with open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO). We hypothesised that medial condyle BMD would decrease and lateral condyle BMD would increase after OWHTO.
METHODS: Overall, 51 patients (mean age: 65.3 years; female: 40, male: 11) treated with OWHTO were prospectively enrolled. Several angles using whole single-leg radiographs were measured preoperatively and up to 24 months postoperatively. Five square tibial regions of interest (ROI) located below the proxi

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory arthritis affecting 0.5-1.0% of the general population worldwide and although RA is properly considered a disease of the joints, it can cause a variety of extra-articular manifestations. This study was performed to find out any discrepancy in fracture risk estimates with and without bone mineral density (BMD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. This observational cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Rheumatology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh from July 2013 to July 2015. Total 6

Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS), a gray-level texture measure derived from spine dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) images, is a bone mineral density (BMD)-independent risk factor for fracture. An unresolved question is whether TBS is sufficiently responsive to change over time or in response to widely used osteoporosis therapy at the individual level to serve as a useful biomarker. Using the Manitoba DXA Registry, we identified 11,643 individuals age 40 years and older with two fan-beam DXA scans performed on the same instrument within 5 years (mean interval 3.2 years), of whom 6
