Accoustic immitance measures in infants with 226 and 1000 hz probes: correlation with otoacoustic emissions and otoscopy examination.

UNLABELLED: Audiological evaluation in infants should include the middle ear (immitance measures and otoscopy) and also a cochlear evaluation. AIM: To check which tympanometry tone test (226 Hz or 1000 Hz), transient otoacoustic emissions and otoscopy. METHODS: Transient otoacoustic emissions were taken from sixty infants ranging from zero to four months of age. The babies were assigned to two groups of 30 infants each, according to the presence or absence of otoacoustic emissions (OAE). All babies have undergone tympanometry with probe tones of 226 and 1000 Hz and ENT evaluation. RESULTS:

Olivocochlear efferents: anatomy, physiology, function, and the measurement of efferent effects in humans.

This review covers the basic anatomy and physiology of the olivocochlear reflexes and the use of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in humans to monitor the effects of one group, the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents. MOC fibers synapse on outer hair cells (OHCs), and activation of these fibers inhibits basilar membrane responses to low-level sounds. This MOC-induced decrease in the gain of the cochlear amplifier is reflected in changes in OAEs. Any OAE can be used to monitor MOC effects on the cochlear amplifier. Each OAE type has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most straightforward te

Intracochlear perfusion of pneumolysin, a pneumococcal protein, rapidly abolishes auditory potentials in the Guinea pig cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial meningitis and chronic suppurative otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae are associated with considerable otological morbidity. Specifically, sensorineural hearing loss is a permanent sequela in a third of those who contract pneumococcal meningitis. Pneumolysin, a pneumococcal protein, has been implicated as one of the main virulence/cytotoxic factors. Its pathogenicity is intimately dependent on an ability to form transmembrane pores on binding with cholesterol in target tissues. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We perfused wild-type pneumolysin, at a number of different

Clinical applications of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions in the pediatric population.

Our objectives were 1) to determine whether transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are affected by the status of the tympanic membrane (TM) and middle ear (ME) as determined by clinical examinations and tympanograms; 2) to determine the efficacy of TEOAEs in detecting hearing loss; and 3) to determine the relative effects of the ME status and hearing loss on TEOAEs. In a prospective observational study in a tertiary care children's hospital, 89 patients (169 ears; 9 ears eliminated from analyses) were examined by 2 attending pediatric otolaryngologists for otologic conditions and un

Role of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions for hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), which are known to be expressions of an intact cochlear function, could be useful for the rationale of hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma (AN) surgery. STUDY DESIGN: The TEOAEs were measured before, during, and after surgery in a consecutive series of patients affected by cerebellopontine angle tumors. SETTING: The study was performed at the Department of Otolaryngology, University "La Sapienza" of Rome. PATIENTS: Five patients with AN and one with a meningioma totally involving the Cochlear

[Effects of stimulus rate on the ABR of acoustic tumor patients].

The effect of stimulus rate on the ABR of acoustic tumor (AT) patients was studied. We delivered 90 dB nHL click stimuli to 23 AT patients at stimulus rates of 9.5 Hz, 20 Hz, 40 Hz and 90 Hz, and recorded the ABR at each rate. Normal hearing subjects (42 ears) and sensorineural hearing loss patients (30 ears) were also studied for normative data. The following two parameters were examined: the interpeak latency difference between wave I and wave V (IPL I-V) at each stimulus rate, and the increase in IPL I-V (delta IPL I-V) when the stimulus rate was increased from 9.5 Hz. The values of both pa

[Transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions in children with impaired middle ear ventilation].

Transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) has proven to be a useful clinical screening test for auditory dysfunction. Problems concerning the evaluation are mainly due to irregularities of the physiological middle ear functions. In this study different degrees of middle ear alterations were quantified by means of tympanometry, otoscopy and pure-tone audiometry and then related to the results of TEOAE registration which were classified by the coefficient of the cross correlation and the frequency response spectrum. Data were obtained from 82 ears of 41 children between the age of 3 and 7 ye

The structural dynamics of music drive acute stress recovery through functional reorganization of stress-regulation networks.

Music is widely utilized to support recovery from stress, yet the precise neural mechanisms driving this therapeutic effect remain poorly understood. Crucially, it has been unclear whether music provides unique neurobiological benefits or simply acts as a general, relaxing auditory stimulus. Here, we demonstrate that music selectively facilitates multisystem recovery from acute stress-enhancing positive mood (PM) and accelerating autonomic stabilization (electrodermal activity and heart rate)-significantly outperforming an active natural sound control. Using functional MRI and dynamic causal m

Opposite Effects of Alpha Oscillations on Mind-Wandering with Eyes Open and Closed.

Spontaneous fluctuations in brain activity are thought to underlie mind-wandering, moments when mental experience becomes unrelated to what one is currently doing. A large body of research has investigated ongoing neural oscillations in the alpha band (7-14 Hz), reflecting changes in arousal and attention. However, studies disagree whether the power of alpha oscillations increases or decreases during mind-wandering compared with on-task focus. We hypothesized that these opposite effects arise from differences in eye state across studies, as eye closure increases alpha power and can reverse alp

Temporal weighting functions for interaural time and level differences. VI. Effects of pulse rate on modulated envelopes.

Temporal weighting functions were measured for binaural lateralization of amplitude-modulated trains of narrowband clicks. When the envelope was one rise-fall cycle of a 20-Hz sinusoid and the interclick interval was 2 ms, temporal weighting functions revealed strong onset dominance in the form of maximal weight on the initial click, despite its low amplitude (-36 dB) relative to the envelope peak. Onset dominance was greater for lateralization based on interaural time differences compared to interaural level differences (ILDs), and was also reduced when the interclick interval was lengthened

Enhanced Time-Locked Decoding for Spoken Words but Not Environmental Sounds in Natural-Like Auditory Conditions.

Humans are especially sensitive to speech sounds even in complex acoustic environments, but it remains unclear whether speech is tracked differently from other meaningful sounds under such conditions. Magnetoencephalography recordings combined with machine learning have revealed that dynamic time-locking of cortical activation to unfolding speech is crucial for encoding its acoustic-phonetic features. Here we investigated whether a similar mechanism for speech encoding operates during concurrent processing of speech and nonspeech sounds. Twenty participants listened to superimposed spoken word

Neural tracking of auditory statistical regularities in adults with and without dyslexia.

Listeners implicitly use statistical regularities to segment continuous sound input into meaningful units, eg transitional probabilities between syllables to segment a speech stream into separate words. Implicit learning of such statistical regularities in a novel stimulus stream is reflected in a synchronization of neural responses to the sequential stimulus structure. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that neural tracking of the statistical stimulus structure is reduced in individuals with dyslexia who have weaker reading and spelling skills, and possibly also weaker statistical

The impact of thermal and auditory unpleasant stimulus on explicit motor imagery in healthy individuals: An experimental study.

Motor imagery is the ability to mentally simulate a motor task without actually performing it. Furthermore, pain is an unpleasant sensory experience that involves different dimensions - sensory-discriminative, motivational-affective, and cognitive-evaluative - that are known to interfere with motor imagery. However, it remains unclear which specific pain dimension most significantly impairs motor imagery vividness. This study aims to compare the effects of unpleasant auditory (primarily affective and cognitive) and thermal (primarily sensory) stimuli, which can be assimilated to pain, on discr

Precise spike-timing information in the brainstem is well aligned with the needs of communication and the perception of environmental sounds.

The dynamic fluctuations in the amplitude of sound, known as sound envelopes, are ubiquitous in natural sounds and convey information critical for the recognition of speech, and of sounds generally. We are perceptually most sensitive to slow modulations which are most common. However, previous studies of envelope coding in the brainstem found an under-representation of these slow, low-frequency, modulations. Specifically, the synchronization of spike times to the envelope was enhanced in some neuron types, forming channels specialized for envelope processing but tuned to a restricted range of

[Research Progress of Chirp ABR and Its Application in Forensic Auditory Identification].

The objective assessment of hearing loss is one of the critical components in forensic clinical research. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an important method for objectively assessing hearing levels. It is divided into various types based on different stimulus signals, each with its own characteristics and applications. Among them, narrow-band Chirp ABR, due to its frequency specificity, fulfills the basic requirements for objective assessment of forensic audiology, promising to be an important method of objective hearing assessment in forensic medicine. This article reviews the developme

A Multimodal Approach to Measuring Listening Effort: A Systematic Review on the Effects of Auditory Task Demand on Physiological Measures and Their Relationship.

OBJECTIVES: Listening effort involves the mental effort required to perceive an auditory stimulus, for example in noisy environments. Prolonged increased listening effort, for example due to impaired hearing ability, may increase risk of health complications. It is therefore important to identify valid and sensitive measures of listening effort. Physiological measures have been shown to be sensitive to auditory task demand manipulations and are considered to reflect changes in listening effort. Such measures include pupil dilation, alpha power, skin conductance level, and heart rate variabilit

Long-term training alters response dynamics in the aging auditory cortex.

Age-related auditory dysfunction, presbycusis, is caused in part by functional changes in the auditory cortex (ACtx) such as altered response dynamics and increased population correlations. Given the ability of cortical function to be altered by training, we tested if performing auditory tasks might benefit auditory function in old age. We examined this by training adult mice on a low-effort tone-detection task for at least six months and then investigated functional responses in ACtx at an older age (∼18 months). Task performance remained stable well into old age. Comparing sound-evoked respo

The Directional Effects of Marker Frequencies on Across-Channel Temporal Gap Detection Tasks: An Experimental Study.

INTRODUCTION: Gap detection tests are crucial clinical tools for identifying auditory processing disorders that result from abnormalities in the central auditory nervous system. These tests assess the ability to resolve temporal information in sounds, which aids in the diagnosis of auditory temporal processing issues. This study explores the directional effects of marker frequencies on gap detection tasks with respect to the conditions of long and short frequency disparity (separation). METHODS: We measured the gap detection thresholds (GDTs) using four across-channel narrowband noise conditi
