Exploring testicular miRNA profiles during developmental stages in Dezhou donkeys: A preliminary insight.

Testicular development and spermatogenesis are complex phenomena controlled by various genetic factors, including miRNA-based post-transcriptional gene expression regulation. Exploring the miRNA expression patterns during testicular development in Dezhou donkeys would enhance our understanding of equine fertility and spermatogenesis. In this investigation, we examined the testicular miRNA profiles at various stages of development. The experimental animals were divided into three groups based on their developmental stages: 2 months old (juvenile: n = 3), 12 months old (adolescent; n = 3) and 24

The community support and its role in adolescent pregnancy and school reintegration in rural Rwanda: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: In low-income rural Rwanda, adolescent pregnancy limits health and education, leading to poor health outcomes, high dropout rates, and restricted socioeconomic mobility. While previous studies have inspected the prevalence, stigma, and health-related aspects of adolescent pregnancy in Rwanda, research is needed to investigate the impact of parental support and reproductive health education in these communities. OBJECTIVES: This research investigates the connection between adolescent pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and parental engagement in reproductive health education in rural

Elevating and empowering reproductive futures: Pediatric and adolescent gynecology's specialized care across the globe.

Pediatric and adolescent gynecology (PAG) is an expanding subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that addresses the reproductive health needs of girls and young women worldwide. In regions with limited subspecialist healthcare providers, general obstetricians, gynecologists, and nurse-midwives, frontline healthcare providers provide essential PAG services. In this article, we examine the multifaceted role of PAG, encompassing preventive care counseling, clinical care, surgical expertise, endocrine management, genetic counseling, and advocacy, while offering resources for generalists. PAG sp

Adolescent pregnancy prevention: a review of interventions and programs.

Adolescent pregnancy is a significant social concern. Although rates of adolescent pregnancy have decreased in recent years, they are higher than in any other industrialized nation. Adolescent pregnancy increases the risk of negative consequences for mothers and their children. With little theory to guide practice, pregnancy prevention programs have had little success. The most effective programs have extended beyond reproductive health to include life options, such as education and job skills. Future research is needed to understand factors that predispose teens to early childbearing and to d

Differential Risk Factors for Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors by Sex and Weight Status Among U.S. Adolescents.

PURPOSE: To determine if previously reported risk factors for the development of unhealthy weight control behaviors differ by sex and weight status using a nationally representative longitudinal sample of adolescents followed through young adulthood. METHODS: We used nationally representative longitudinal cohort data collected from baseline (11-18 years old, 1994-1995, Wave I) and seven-year follow-up (18-24 years old, 2001-2002, Wave III) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). We examined potential risk factors (adverse childhood events and adolescent

Low-dose oral contraceptives in adolescents: how low can you go?

CONTEXT: The use of combined oral contraception (COC) before the accrual of peak bone mass in adolescents is common. Despite the tendency to prescribe lower ethinyl estradiol concentrations so as to reduce thromboembolic complications, concerns have developed as to whether low-dose COC provides sufficient estrogen supplementation for adequate adolescent bone development. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the available literature on bone mineral density (BMD) and low-dose COC in adolescents in an effort to determine whether adult-oriented recommendations for the lowest tolerated estrogen dose shou

Neonatal outcome: is adolescent pregnancy a risk factor?

It has been widely reported that adolescent mothers are more likely to experience poor pregnancy outcome, especially low-birth-weight and/or premature infants. Recent data suggest that this poor outcome may be attributed to confounding health and social characteristics of adolescent mothers. A study of maternal health and neonatal development at Boston City Hospital provided an opportunity to assess whether adolescent mothers deliver infants with poorer outcomes at birth than nonadolescents independent of numerous social and health differences between adolescent and nonadolescent mothers. A to

GLP-1 receptor agonists in adolescent obesity: Incretin-based therapies during a sensitive developmental period.

Adolescent obesity is a chronic disease associated with early cardiometabolic dysfunction and long-term health risk. Behavioral interventions alone produce modest and unsustained weight loss, leading to increasing use of pharmacotherapy. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have emerged as highly effective treatments for obesity, producing clinically significant reductions in body weight and improvements in glycemic control. Short-term safety profiles are characterized primarily by transient gastrointestinal symptoms and low rates of serious adverse events or psychiatric sympto

'It was riotous behaviour!': Mothers' experiences of adolescents' conduct while abusing drugs.

The impact of adolescent substance abuse is widespread and significantly compromises the psychosocial well-being of those closest to the adolescent. This is evidentially so for parents who are required to cope with the adolescent's misconduct. Using an interpretative phenomenological methodology, this article describes mothers' experiences of living with an adolescent who is dependent on drugs. Specifically, the article explores the mothers' accounts of the pernicious behaviours that the adolescents engage(d) in during their drug abuse period. Qualitative 1:1 interviews revealed two common for

Intergenerational Transmission of Rumination via Parenting Behaviors and Family Characteristics: The Impact on Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms.

The relationship between rumination and internalizing psychopathology across the lifespan is robustly documented, yet the development of rumination is not well understood. In a prospective study of adolescents (N = 629, M age = 13.05 years, 51.5% female, 48.3% African American/Black) and their primary female caregivers (90.6% biological mothers), self-report measures of rumination, parental behaviors, family characteristics, and internalizing symptoms were completed. Maternal rumination was not predictive of adolescent rumination, but was associated with less effective parenting and maladaptiv

Early Adolescent and Peer Drinking Homogeneity: Similarities and Differences Among European and North American Countries.

This study examined associations between perceived peer and adolescent alcohol use in European and North American countries. Self-reported monthly alcohol use and adolescents' report of their peers' alcohol use were assessed in nationally representative samples of students aged 11.5 and 13.5 years (n = 11,277) in Greece, Scotland, Switzerland, and the United States who participated in the 2005/2006 Health Behavior in School-Aged Children survey. Cross-national associations between perceived peer and adolescent alcohol use were examined using logistic regressions and interactions by gender and

Adolescent exhibitionists: theory and therapy.

In the absence of an agreed etiology or preferred treatment for exhibitionism the author reviews his clinical experience in working with adolescent boys who have indecently exposed themselves. A retrospective analysis indicates that the implicit theories that informed clinical practice construed exhibitionism as social behaviour rather than psychological symptom and placed it in a clear development context. It is argued that adolescent exhibitionism can be viewed as a "strategic interaction" that is characteristically adolescent. Using the individual adolescent's account of his misconduct it m

Insulin resistance in patients with post-adolescent acne.

BACKGROUND: Post-adolescent acne has been defined as acne in a patient aged >25 years. Acne vulgaris first develops at the onset of puberty as a result of hormonal changes. During puberty, there is a transient decline in insulin sensitivity. We hypothesized that insulin resistance might persist after puberty in patients with post-adolescent acne. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted in order to investigate the relationship between post-adolescent acne and insulin resistance. METHODS: The study population comprised 35 patients with post-adolescent acne and 35 healthy control subjects. The par

"She just wants to be a normal kid": Adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and their caregivers' transition from paediatric to adult care.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience disruptions to normal adolescent development. Lack of preparation for transition from paediatric to adult care can have negative biopsychosocial outcomes. We aimed to explore adolescents' perspectives on how IBD affects their lives. Additionally, we aimed to understand adolescents and their parents' views on transition from paediatric to adult IBD care. DESIGN: Qualitative study. Adolescents and parents participated in semi-structured interviews together. METHODS: Participants included eight adolescents with IBD (four f…

Early adversity, executive function, and the development of cognitive disengagement syndrome: a sex-specific mediating pathway.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), the developmental mechanisms linking early adversity to CDS symptoms remain largely unknown. This study addresses this gap by examining whether executive function (EF) serves as a cognitive mechanism linking cumulative adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to later CDS symptoms and whether this mediational chain differs by adolescent sex. METHODS: Data were drawn from the prospective longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study®. The final analytic sample included 4,678 adolescents (52.5% mal
