Parental history of alcoholism: a risk factor for alcohol-related peripheral neuropathies.

The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors of alcohol-related peripheral neuropathies. A case-control study was performed to compare two groups of alcoholic patients, one with peripheral neuropathy and the other without, but with alcohol-related cirrhosis, pancreatitis or cardiomyopathy. Ninety patients were recruited in four in-patient units of a French hospital: 32 patients had a peripheral neuropathy and 58 patients did not. Univariate analysis showed no differences between the two groups for sex, age, body mass index and duration of the alcoholic disease. Peripheral neuropathie

Attenuation of alcohol intake by ibogaine in three strains of alcohol-preferring rats.

Alcohol-preferring (P), Fawn-Hooded (FH) and alcohol-accepting (AA) rats were injected intraperitoneally (IP) or subcutaneously (SC) with different doses (10, 30, and 60 mg/kg) of Ibogaine or vehicle. In a separate experiment, FH rats were administered intragastrically (IG) with either 60 mg/kg of Ibogaine or vehicle for 5 days. In addition, the effects of Ibogaine on blood alcohol concentrations were measured. Our data show that, contrary to the SC administration of Ibogaine, IP administration of the agent significantly and dose-dependently reduced alcohol intake in these rats. Subchronic IG

Fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects. The University of Minnesota experience.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) describes a set of physical and neurologic defects that occur in the newborn as a direct result of maternal alcohol consumption. We report on a review of a series of patients seen at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic (UMHC) who were identified as having been exposed to alcohol in the prenatal period. Of 46 patients, 38 were found to have FAS, and seven were found to have a less severe set of abnormalities termed fetal alcohol effects (FAE). This series at UMHC demonstrated many shocking characteristics. The average IQ of the children with FAS was unde

Actions of alcohol on immunity and neoplasia in fetal alcohol exposed and adult rats.

Alterations of immune function can result not only from alcohol consumption by the adult human or animal, but also from fetal alcohol exposure (FAE). We have demonstrated long-lasting effects of FAE on T cell function and effects of adult ethanol (EtOH) consumption on tumorigenesis. Here, we present recent data that demonstrate that 1) FAE alters the biphasic pattern of thymocyte activation during peripubertal development probably due to effects other than the CD3 pathway; and 2) the long-lasting impaired proliferative response of splenocytes from FAE rats is not due to loss of their ability t

[Are children with alcohol embryopathy latent alcoholics? A study of the risk for developing dependence].

Within 3 years 48 caretakers and parents of children with fetal alcohol syndrome were asked about the childrens experience and contact with alcohol. The children were mainly raised in foster and adoptive families (40/48 cases), where usually moderate or restricted consumption of alcohol was common. The children were between 4-18 years (means = 7; 5) of age. In 5 children alcohol consumption was observed once or several times. Some children showed signs of increased desire for drinking alcohol. A substance related addiction was never observed until now. Nevertheless the risk of addiction develo

The diagnosis of alcohol and cannabis dependence in cocaine dependents and alcohol dependence in their families.

Genetic research in alcoholism has made major advances in recent decades. Twin, adoption, high-risk and familial studies have demonstrated an inheritance factor in alcoholism. Few studies have demonstrated a genetic predisposition to cocaine and cannabis dependence. Two hundred and sixty-three inpatients were given a structured psychiatric interview retrospectively (150) and prospectively (113) to obtain DSM-III-R diagnosis of cocaine, alcohol and cannabis dependence disorders in the inpatients and of alcohol dependence in family members. Our study reveals a large number of cocaine dependents

Alcohol and dietary intake in the development of chronic pancreatitis and liver disease in alcoholism.

Alcohol and dietary intake were determined in alcoholic patients with chronic pancreatitis and alcoholic liver disease. Patients with chronic pancreatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis ingested approximately 50% of their calories as alcohol, and all had low mean intakes of protein, carbohydrate, and fat as compared with control subjects. Patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis had the lowest intake of nonalcohol calories and protein. Women with chronic pancreatitis had ingested alcohol for a shorter period of time than men whereas women with alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis had ingeste

Hepatic glutathione content in patients with alcoholic and non alcoholic liver diseases.

Reduced and oxidized hepatic glutathione was evaluated during alcoholic and non alcoholic liver injury. We studied 35 chronic alcoholics, 20 patients with non alcoholic liver diseases, 15 control subjects. Hepatic glutathione was measured in liver biopsies and correlated with histology and laboratory tests. Alcoholic and non alcoholic patients exhibited a significant decrease of hepatic glutathione compared to control subjects (controls: 4.14 +/- 0.1 mumol/g liver; alcoholics: 2.55 +/- 0.1, p less than 0.001; non alcoholics 2.77 +/- 0.1, p less than 0.001). Changes in alcohol problems as a result of changing alcohol consumption: a natural experiment.

Alcohol consumption declined by about 10.5% in Quebec and 2.5% in Ontario but increased by 9.5% in Alberta in the years 1974-1983. This created a 'natural experiment' in which the effects of various changes in alcohol consumption on alcohol problems could be assessed. Declines in rates of most alcohol problems were found in Quebec and Ontario despite their different rates of decrease in consumption. However, there were declines in alcoholism rates, and deaths from liver disease and the alcohol dependency syndrome in Alberta. Some problems such as impaired driving and toxic or accidental deaths

The possible occurrence of "alcoholic hepatitis" in a patient with bulimia in the absence of diagnosable alcoholism.

A case of a 20-yr-old female with possible "alcoholic hepatitis" and a mixed micro/macronodular cirrhosis occurring in association with overt bulimia and a history of anorexia nervosa, but without any objective evidence of either alcoholism or alcohol abuse, is reported. The possible factors that may have contributed, either alone or in combination, to produce this unusual occurrence are discussed.

On the potential health effects of consuming "non-alcoholic" or "de-alcoholized" beverages.

This paper reviews the potential health risks for persons who consume the newly available "non-alcoholic" or "de-alcoholized" beverages which may contain trace amounts of ethanol (less than 0.5% by volume). The discussion includes relative risk rates for chemical dependency, fetal alcohol syndrome, chemical and natural hypersensitivity, cancer, cardiomyopathy, hypertension and cirrhosis for those who drink standard alcoholic drinks and "non-alcoholic" drinks. It is concluded that non-alcoholic drinks pose little risk for developing alcohol related problems based on our current physiological an

P300 and alcohol consumption in normals and individuals at risk for alcoholism. A preliminary report.

Pairs of college student subjects (36 male, 36 female) were matched on age, sex, and personal drinking history. One pair member had a parent who met the DSM III criteria of alcoholism, while the other pair member had no close alcoholic relative. The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was obtained from each subject with auditory stimuli in an "oddball" paradigm. Target stimuli occurred randomly on 20% of the trials in a frequency discrimination task, a relatively easy intensity discrimination task, and a more difficult intensity discrimination task. Subjects indicated when the target item

Blood alcohol concentration: a critical factor for producing fetal alcohol effects.

A dose of 6.6 g/kg of alcohol, delivered in 12 equally-spaced fractions each 24 hours via an artificial rearing procedure during postnatal days 4-10, produced mean blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) that were low (46.6 mg/dl), but stable with time. This relatively constant alcohol exposure did not limit brain growth in neonatal rats when measured on postnatal day 10. The same daily dose concentrated into 6 fractions over 12 hours (with 6 alcohol-free fractions the remaining 12 hours) resulted in cyclic BACs having high peaks (270.2 mg/dl). The cyclic regimen produced a significant reduction i

Serum alcohol levels, toxicology screens, and use of the breath alcohol analyzer.

The emergency physician sees a large number of patients with problems related to the ingestion of alcohol, drugs, and toxins, and must be prepared to deal with them in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This article discusses a rationale for ordering serum alcohol levels and toxicology screens, as well as use of the breath alcohol analyzer. A serum alcohol level should be reserved for patients in whom the alcohol level is necessary to confirm a diagnosis or to guide treatment. An alcohol level is indicated when alcohol use is combined with a significant alteration in mental status, multip

Alcoholic brain damage and neurological symptoms of alcohol withdrawal--manifestations of overhydration.

Central nervous system damage is a major complication of alcohol abuse. Vitamin deficiency, particularly thiamine deficiency, has a role in producing pathological and psychological changes of alcoholic brain damage, but it is likely that alcohol has a direct toxic effect on the brain. It is proposed that neuropathological abnormalities seen in alcoholics, and also neurological symptoms during alcohol withdrawal, may reflect cerebral edema caused by alcohol. The neurological symptoms of alcohol withdrawal show a similarity to those seen in hyponatremia or water intoxication. It is suggested tha

Nutritional status of alcoholic patients: it's possible relationship to alcoholic liver damage.

This study was performed to look for a possible relationship between the nutritional status and the presence of liver damage in alcoholic patients. One hundred chronic alcoholics admitted for treatment to the Alcoholism Ward, without clinical signs of liver failure, were studied. In 84, anthropometric nutritional indexes, liver function tests, and a liver biopsy were performed; in 69 patients a dietary survey was obtained. A dietary imbalance was observed in the total group; 65% of ingested calories were derived from ethanol. The intake of proteins, vitamins, and minerals was below the RDA, NA

Epilepsy and alcohol: the influence of social alcohol intake on seizures and treatment in epilepsy.

People suffering from epileptic seizures are often confronted with restrictions resulting from their attacks, such as exclusion from several professions and from some sports, not being allowed to drive a car, and prohibition of alcohol. Consultation of manuals to trace the literature studies on which this last prohibition was based was unsuccessful since there was no mention of the original research from which it appeared that alcohol was provocative of seizures. To be able to give a well-founded judgment on the influence of social alcohol intake on epilepsy, research was undertaken with epile
