Parenthood, gender, and turning points to crime for young people in Latin America.

In very different societal contexts, parenthood has been identified as a critical turning point in life course trajectories. In this qualitative study, we explore parenthood as a turning point for 40 young women and 40 young men in prisons across Latin America. We study the impact of parenthood on criminal trajectories, identify gender differences, and analyze the different mechanisms at work. The analysis distinguishes between positive (crime reducing) and negative (crime increasing) changes following parenthood. When participants felt that they had to change, "slow down" or obtain a more sta

Perspectives on Community Geriatrics: An Applied Proposal From Colombia, South America.

This essay argues for the urgent need to redefine the role of geriatricians, as medical speciality, beyond hospital settings, emphasizing the importance of community geriatrics (CG) in Latin America. Despite global discussions on integrating CG in geriatric practice, its presence remains marginal in low-income countries, where older adults face systemic barriers to health care access. The essay calls for a discussion of CG within geriatric training model, which often prioritizes hospital-based care, and advocates for a community-based approaches to aging. Using a geriatric program in Colombia

The Economics of Cardiac Rehabilitation in North, Central, and South America: A Narrative Review.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an effective strategy for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in individuals living with ischemic heart disease or heart failure, and among patients who have recently undergone cardiovascular surgery. Although CR is recommended by clinical guidelines and typically covered by payers, its uptake has been low. This is in part because of substantial economic barriers to accessing CR. Understanding the economics of CR from the perspective of various stakeholders -including patients, clinicians, health systems, and payers - is critical to developing stra

Cancer mortality predictions for 2025 in Latin America with focus on prostate cancer.

We provided cancer mortality rate estimates for the year 2025 in six Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico), focusing on prostate cancer. We extracted mortality data for all cancers combined and the most common sites from the WHO and population data since 1970 from the United Nations. Estimates for 2025 were computed applying a linear regression to the most recent segment identified through Poisson join-point regression. Avoided deaths number from 1991 to 2025 was estimated by applying the 1990 peak rate to population data. Mortality from all cancers is

Pediatric Kidney Care in Northern Central America: A Survey of Pediatric Nephrologists.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem worldwide. Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua are among the top six countries of the continent with high mortality and years of life lost attributable to CKD. The magnitude of the gap in delivering pediatric kidney care in northern Central America has never been systematically documented, hindering the possibility of planning prevention and effective management. A survey was sent to the directors of pediatric kidney care referral centers in the aforementioned countries to understand the epidemiology and current state of the p

Epitypification of Armillaria solidipes, a cause of Armillaria root disease in North America.

Although Armillaria solidipes was described in 1900, confusion has surrounded the appropriate use of this taxonomic epithet, largely because DNA sequence-based characterization and an associated culture were unavailable for the original holotype. An epitype for A. solidipes (previously known as North American Biological Species I) is established herein, along with morphological descriptions and genetic characterization that clearly distinguish A. solidipes, which is found in North America, from A. ostoyae (previously known as European Biological Species C), which is found in Eurasia. Prevalence of anxiety disorders in Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anxiety disorders among the adult population in Latin America (LATAM) and its association with development indicators is insufficiently characterised. We estimated pooled regional, country, and sex-specific prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in LATAM based on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria. Additionally, we examined the association between its prevalence and four country-level development indicators: Human Development Index (HDI), income inequality (Gini coefficient), Gender

Maternal Chronic Disease Prevention in Rural America: A Life Course Perspective.

PURPOSE: This commentary examines the complex maternal health landscape in rural America, highlighting the structural barriers to effective chronic disease management. We provide recommendations to center chronic disease management using a life course approach. CONCLUSIONS: Women in rural areas face significantly higher maternal mortality and morbidity rates than their urban counterparts, largely due to a disproportionate burden of chronic disease conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, cardiomyopathy, and mental health disorders. These disparities are deeply rooted in the uneq

Epidemiological Surveillance of Genetically Determined Microcephaly in Latin America: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Congenital microcephaly is a clinical manifestation with a heterogeneous etiology, and its epidemiological surveillance relies on the systematic identification of cases and investigation of their underlying causes to inform preventive strategies and improve prognostic assessments. In Latin America, despite the existence of congenital anomaly reporting programs since 1967, the surveillance of microcephaly only gained substantial attention following the Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in 2015. Since then, efforts have predominantly concentrated on cases of infectious origin, of

Current epidemiological overview of glomerulonephritis in Latin America: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Glomerulonephritis (GN) is a group of kidney disorders marked by glomerular damage, leading to proteinuria, hematuria, hypertension, and impaired kidney function. Despite advancements in diagnostics, kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis. The prevalence of GN varies globally, with Latin America showing a significant increase in incidence rates. METHODS: This systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and included observational studies from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and SciELO databases. Studies were selected based on their focus on the prevalence of GN and its

Haemoproteus syrnii and other haemosporidians infecting owls from North America.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidians (Haemosporida, Apicomplexa), which include malaria parasites, are found in nearly all terrestrial ecosystems. Avian haemosporidians have been extensively studied; however, there is limited information on parasites in owls (order Strigiformes). Here, haemosporidians infecting North American owls were characterized using an integrative methodology. METHODS: Taking advantage of injured/dead owls from rehabilitation centres in the central and northeastern USA, 53 individuals of Bubo virginianus, Strix varia, Megascops asio, Bubo scandiacus, Aegolius acadicus, and Tyto

The Spread of the Mosquito-Transmitted West Nile Virus in North America and Europe.

West Nile virus (WNV) disease, a mosquito-transmitted Flavivirus infection, represents a substantial public health research interest. This virus was unknown in the Western hemisphere until it was introduced in 1999 into an immunologically naïve population. WNV caused an epizootic and epidemic in New York City. The infection then swept over North America, causing mass mortality in birds and cumulatively 60,000 human cases, half of whom were hospitalised, mostly with neurological symptoms. The virus closely resembled a goose virus isolated in Israel in 1998. Mosquitoes of the genus Culex were id

Hearing Loss: Genetic Testing, Current Advances and the Situation in Latin America.

Congenital hearing loss is the most common birth defect, estimated to affect 2-3 in every 1000 births, with ~50-60% of those related to genetic causes. Technological advances enabled the identification of hundreds of genes related to hearing loss (HL), with important implications for patients, their families, and the community. Despite these advances, in Latin America, the population with hearing loss remains underdiagnosed, with most studies focusing on a single locus encompassing the GJB2/GJB6 genes. Here we discuss how current and emerging genetic knowledge has the potential to alter the ap
