Comparison of the efficacies of three heartworm preventives against experimentally induced infections with Ancylostoma caninum and Toxocara canis in pups.

Forty 11- to 12-week-old helminth-naive Beagles were categorized by sex and weight and randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups (group 1, ivermectin/pyrantel pamoate; group 2, milbemycin oxime; group 3, untreated control; group 4, diethylcarbamazine/oxibendazole). Each pup was inoculated PO with approximately 100 infective Ancylostoma caninum larvae and 100 larvated Toxocara canis eggs on day 0, and repeatedly at 7-day intervals thereafter until day 56. Administration of anthelmintics also began on day 0, and subsequent treatments were administered according to label recommendations at 30-day i

Seasonal influence on human enteric infection by Ancylostoma caninum.

Ancylostoma caninum, the cosmopolitan canine hookworm prevalent in domestic pets throughout northeastern Australia, has been identified as a cause of obscure abdominal pain. To investigate the influence of climate on putative and confirmed human infections, a retrospective study of patients with eosinophilic enteritis and established infections was undertaken to identify the monthly and seasonal rates. The numbers seen each month were maintained throughout most of the year but decreased in June and remained low during winter. An increased rate of enteritis occurred during spring, which precede

An investigation of hookworm infection and reinfection following mass anthelmintic treatment in the south Indian fishing community of Vairavankuppam.

Hookworm infections, as assessed by counting worms expelled following anthelmintic treatment and by egg output, were found to be of low prevalence and intensity in a South Indian fishing community. The initial overall prevalence of infection in the community was 43%, and the average burden was estimated at 2.2 hookworms per person. The age profiles of prevalence and intensity differed between males and females, with the latter harbouring significantly higher levels of infection. Children of both sexes under 10 years of age rarely harboured hookworms. Treatment with pyrantel pamoate was estimat

Effectiveness of a novel orally administered combination drug product containing milbemycin oxime and lotilaner (Credelio® Plus) for the treatment of larval and immature adult stages of Ancylostoma caninum in experimentally infected dogs.

BACKGROUND: The hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, is a common and important zoonotic intestinal nematode parasite that infects dogs globally. Both the immature and adult stages of A. caninum ingest large volumes of blood during the feeding process and can cause severe anemia and death in young dogs, even before patent infections can be diagnosed using routine faecal examination methods. Thus, effective treatment of any pre-patent stages of immature hookworms can reduce or eliminate the risk of clinical disease in infected dogs and additionally reduce environmental contamination of eggs and infect

A novel, species-specific, real-time PCR assay for the detection of the emerging zoonotic parasite Ancylostoma ceylanicum in human stool.

BACKGROUND: Molecular-based surveys have indicated that Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a zoonotic hookworm, is likely the second most prevalent hookworm species infecting humans in Asia. Most current PCR-based diagnostic options for the detection of Ancylostoma species target the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions of the ribosomal gene cluster. These regions possess a considerable degree of conservation among the species of this genus and this conservation can lead to the misidentification of infecting species or require additional labor for accurate species-level determination. We have develo

Real-time PCR demonstrates Ancylostoma duodenale is a key factor in the etiology of severe anemia and iron deficiency in Malawian pre-school children.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections are an important cause of (severe) anemia and iron deficiency in children in the tropics. Type of hookworm species (Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus) and infection load are considered associated with disease burden, although these parameters are rarely assessed due to limitations of currently used diagnostic methods. Using multiplex real-time PCR, we evaluated hookworm species-specific prevalence, infection load and their contribution towards severe anemia and iron deficiency in pre-school children in Malawi. METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS: A. duodenale an

Systemic efficacy of nodulisporic acid against fleas on dogs.

Nodulisporic acid A (NSA) is a novel natural product from a new structural class that was shown previously to have insecticidal activity against blowfly larvae. To determine if there was useful systemic efficacy against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis). NSA was evaluated in an artificial membrane flea feeding device and in dogs. In the artificial membrane flea feeding device, adult C. felis were allowed to feed on bovine blood containing various concentrations of NSA through a Parafilm membrane. NSA killed the fleas with a 50% lethal concentration of 0.68 microg/ml and was approximately 10-fold m

Hookworm control as a strategy to prevent iron deficiency.

The hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale infect approximately 1 billion people worldwide. The prevalence of hookworm infection increases with age in children, typically reaching a plateau in late adolescence, whereas the intensity of infection may continue to increase throughout adulthood. Hookworms cause intestinal blood loss in amounts proportional to the number of adult worms in the gut. The relationship between hookworm infection intensity and hemoglobin concentration is evident in epidemiologic studies, but may be apparent only above a threshold worm burden that is relat

Molecular approaches to vaccinating against hookworm disease.

Anthelminthic drug chemotherapy has failed as an acceptable approach to hookworm control in the less developed countries of the tropics. The development of a genetically engineered vaccine against hookworm infection would be a major advance in our efforts to control this parasitic disease. We have produced several lead recombinant hookworm vaccine antigens. Their development is based on scientific principles that were generated almost 70 years ago when investigators first began to attenuate living infective hookworm larvae. Those early studies on attenuated live vaccines highlighted the import

Hookworm disease: nutritional implications.

Iron-deficiency anemia resulting from intestinal blood loss is the major consequence of hookworm infection. Development of the anemia can be prevented, and it can be treated by administration of iron. Hypoproteinemia, often associated with hookworm infection, may be the result of either protein malnutrition or increased intestinal loss of protein. It is unlikely that the worms cause diffuse morphologic or functional alterations of the intestine. Fortification or supplementation with iron is a practical method to control hookworm disease in endemic areas.

Intestinal parasite infections in Western Australian Aborigines.

Giardia intestinalis (15.2%) and Hymenolepis nana (20.4%) were the two most frequently reported species in a study of intestinal parasites from 1683 Aboriginal people in Western Australia. Concurrent infection with the two species was statistically significant in the 0 to three years age group only (P < 0.01), and it is suggested that in older age groups the presence of one of these parasites may in some way inhibit the development of the other. Hymenolepis nana infection was more common in males than in females (P < 0.001). Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis infections were confined to th

Mass control of ascariasis with single oral doses of levamisole. A controlled comparison in 3,056 subjects between three incomplete population coverages.

Ninety-, 60-, and 40-percent population coverages with levamisole 2.5 mg/kg of body weight were compared for their effects on Ascaris lumbricoides, ancylostoma, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Trichuris trichiura infections. They were shown to be effective in maintaining a reduced prevalence of A. lumbricoides in the treated subjects for 9, 6, and 3 months, respectively. Nine months after treatment, the prevalence of ascariasis was still lower than before treatment both in the levamisole and in the control subjects, regardless of the population coverage. This was probably because the egg output

Anthropozoonotic helminthiases in Australasia: Part 3: - studies on the prevalence and public health implications of helminth parasites of dogs and cats in urban environments.

Man has acquired helminth infections at different times during his evolutionary history and animals have and do serve an important role in supplementing these acquisitions. Helminth species are divided into those which accompanied man as he emerger as a species and those which he has since acquired from domestic, wild and domiciliated animals by breakdown of ecological, physiological and immunological barriers (Sprent 1969). With particular reference to helminth zoonoses transmitted through domesticated animals, the role played by dogs and cats in disease transmission to man (in urban environm
