BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that the appendix may be a priming site of ulcerative colitis (UC). Appendectomy is inversely associated with the development of UC, and is suggested to have a beneficial effect on the disease course in patients with refractory disease.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to assess histological features of appendices from patients with UC and their clinical relevance.
METHODS: Patients with UC in remission and active UC (therapy refractory) that underwent appendectomy between 2012 and 2019 were included. Histological features of UC appendic…

BACKGROUND: The ability to predict whether a child has complicated appendicitis at initial presentation may influence clinical management. However, whether complicated appendicitis is associated with prehospital or inhospital factors is not clear. We also investigate whether hyponatremia may be a novel prehospital factor associated with complicated appendicitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all pediatric patients (≤12 y) with appendicitis treated with appendectomy from 2000 to 2013 was performed. The main outcome measure was intraoperative confirmation of gangrenous or per…

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing acute appendicitis (AA) in children can be challenging due to atypical symptoms and the difficulty in obtaining a comprehensive history. This study aimed to evaluate the value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in diagnosing AA in the pediatric population.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study involved 200 pediatric patients aged between 0 and 14 years of both sexes, who underwent appendectomy for suspected acute appendicitis. Data of patients were retrieved from the hospital's patient administration system database. We categorized patients into thr…

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells that have properties of both neuronal and endocrine cells. NETs are most common in the small intestine, rectum, and the appendix and frequently termed carcinoid.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 30-year-old male presented with abdominal pain and tenderness in the RLQ. Computerized tomography revealed findings consistent with acute appendicitis. The patient underwent an uneventful laparoscopic appendectomy for an acutely inflamed appendicitis. Histopathological examination, showed a 0.5 cm well-differentiated …

PURPOSE: Presence of the vermiform appendix in an inguinal hernia sac is known as Amyand's hernia. This may present as a tender inguinal swe … es, one perforated appendix, and three appendices adherent to the hernia sac. Eighteen patients had appendectomy during hernia repair, and the other 33 had hernia repair without appendectomy. None of the patients developed recurrent hernia or appendicitis within the follow-up period.
CONCLUSION: In Amyand's hernia the appendix should be examined carefully. A …

BACKGROUND: The appendix is a vestigial organ which is infiltrated by faecal material, microbes and parasites. The most important aetio-pathology of appendicitis is obstruction of its lumen, by a faecolith. This results from accumulation and inspissation of faecal matter around vegetable fibres. The cause for appendicitis is numerous and one among them is parasitic infestation.
AIMS: To analyze the faecolith present in the appendectomy specimen for parasites and to compare the results in fresh and preserved specimens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with acute/chronic appendicitis were subje…

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is the most frequently observed disease requiring emergency surgery. The role of parasites in its pathogenesis has long been discussed. The signs of the parasitic infestations can mimic the signs of acute appendicitis. Therefore, it can cause a negative laparotomy.
AIM: To evaluate the parasitic infestations of the appendix vermiformis whether increas the rate of negative laparotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The histopathology results of a total of 3863 patients who underwent appendectomy with clinically acute appendicitis were evaluated retrospectively. All app…

The optimal surgical management of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN) remains nuanced, requiring a balance between recurrence risk and operative morbidity. Although right hemicolectomy is frequently recommended, accumulating evidence suggests that simple appendectomy is adequate in well-defined circumstances. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with common cardiac comorbidities who presented with symptoms resembling acute appendicitis and was found to have a 10 cm LAMN. Given the intraoperative findings an intact appendix, a healthy appendiceal base, and absence of extra-append…

The de Garengeot hernia is a femoral hernia in which the appendix migrates into the hernia sac. It is usually diagnosed intraoperatively due to its rarity and lack of clinical presentation typical to acute appendicitis. Although most cases need emergency operation due to incarceration, no standard procedure exists. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a de Garangeot hernia preoperatively by contrast-enhanced computed tomography. She underwent one-stage laparoscopic surgery via a totally extraperitoneal approach followed by laparoscopic appendectomy. She recovered un…

Perforated appendicitis within a hernia of any localisation is found in paediatric patients and in the elderly. Despite all modern diagnostic bias, it still may be found unexpectedly during operation. The fore most aim of surgical treatment has to be protection of the intra-abdominal cavity during appendectomy. Thus we provide it for contamination and avoid additional injury of the old and weak patient. The reported case fits in the history of unusual appendectomies.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the colon. Its pathogenesis has been linked to chronic intestinal inflammation … unological and microbial hub. Epidemiological data demonstrate an inverse association between early appendectomy and UC risk, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic strategy. According to recent ACCURE (2025) and COSTA (2026) clinical trials, improved remission outcomes were observed post-appendectomy in selected patients, particularly in patients unrespons …

Acquired diverticula of the vermiform appendix are rare and arise as a result of different pathogenetic mechanisms. One of the etiologies includes proximally located, often unsuspected small neoplasms. Although the association of appendiceal diverticulosis and neoplasia is known, it remains underemphasized in the teaching and practice of surgical pathology. To investigate the frequency of appendiceal neoplasms with acquired diverticulosis, we conducted a retrospective analysis of all appendectomy specimens received in our institution for a 55-month period (January 2002-July 2006). A total of 1…

The association of Enterobius vermicularis infestation with acute appendicitis varies from 0.2-41.8% worldwide. Our purpose was to determine the significance of Enterobius-associated appendicitis by retrospective review of appendectomies performed during a 5-year period at a major children's hospital. The Surgical Pathology database at Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, was reviewed for appendiceal specimens found to have Enterobius infestation. Corresponding patient charts were evaluated for age, gender, presenting symptoms, laboratory data, operative findings, and clinical course. Of the 1

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, Von Recklinghausen disease) is an autosomal dominant disease with a birth incidence of 1/2500-3000. The most common presentations of NF1 are cutaneous presentations like café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. 5%-25% of patients with NF1 have gastrointestinal manifestations of the disease. Appendiceal neurofibroma are extremely rare and only a few cases are described in literature. An appendectomy is indicated because of high risk of appendicitis and malignant transformation. We report the case of a 74-year-old male patient with a history of NF1 with chronic right …

BACKGROUND: Stump appendicitis is an underreported and poorly defined condition. It is the development of obstruction and inflammation of the residual appendix after appendectomy. This is a review of the basic clinical, pathological, and surgical significance of stump appendicitis, and the "critical view" required for prevention.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed MEDLINE search was performed using terms "stump appendicitis" and "retained appendix" to obtain reported cases of stump appendicitis. Sixty-one cases were identified. Each case was charted based on 14 variables. Data were analyzed.
CONCLUSIONS: …
