[Vitamin and mineral deficiency in Mexico. A critical review of the state of the art. II. Vitamin deficiency].

We carried out a review of the studies related to vitamin deficiencies in the Mexican population published since 1950. Forty four studies were published from which we can conclude that: a) dietary intake data suggest that ascorbic acid, riboflavin and retinol intake are deficient: reported intakes were 40-70%, 35-64% and 20-72% of the recommended daily amounts respectively; niacin intake was also deficient in some studies; b) about 10% of Mexican children in rural areas had deficient values of plasma retinol (< 100 ng/ml) and about 25 to 30% had low values (100-200 ng/ml); this prevalence is r

[Scurvy presenting with low-extremity necrotic and purpuric ulcers: Two cases].

BACKGROUND: Scurvy is a clinical syndrome resulting from ascorbic acid deficiency. Although presently rare in the developed world, it continues to occur within certain susceptible populations, particularly the elderly and those with dietary habits with low vitamin C intake. CASES: Two men aged 87 and 69 were referred with multifactorial, progressive ulceration of the lower limbs, without scarring, in a context of arterial disease and other associated comorbidities. In both cases, the level of vitamin C was undetectable. An improvement in the necrotic component and in the purpura was promptly …

Aromatase activity and progesterone metabolism in ovaries of scorbutic mutant rats unable to synthesize ascorbic acid.

Aromatase activity and progesterone metabolism were studied in ovaries of scorbutic ODS rats hereditarily unable to synthesize ascorbic acid (AsA). When ODS rats were kept on an AsA-deficient diet for 23 days, the scurvy developed with undetectable levels of AsA in ovaries. A significant increase in ovarian aromatase activity was observed in scorbutic ODS rats. However, there was no difference in the production of testosterone from progesterone between ovaries of scorbutic and ascorbutic ODS rats. These data suggest that AsA may play a role as a modulator of aromatase activity in vivo.

Scurvy presenting in a homeless 32-year-old male: a case report.

Vitamin C deficiency, otherwise known as scurvy, is one the oldest known diseases. Although its prevalence has substantially diminished, certain populations such as smokers, alcoholics, elderly, and those with malabsorptive syndromes remain at risk. Deficiency presents with perifollicular hemorrhage, corkscrew hairs, and petechiae that can evolve into ecchymoses and purpura. Diagnosis starts with clinical suspicion and is confirmed with plasma and leukocyte ascorbic acid levels. Early suspicion is key. Treatment with vitamin C offers an excellent prognosis and avoids unnecessary workup for dif

Iron deficiency anaemia and Helicobacter pylori infection.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common form of anaemia world-wide. IDA is the simple result of an imbalance between iron loss and absorption. Gastric function with hydrochloric and ascorbic acid is essential for iron absorption. Some strains of Helicobacter pylori are able to acquire iron, competing with the host. A large percentage of patients with atrophic body gastritis (ABG) develop IDA and 61% of them are H. pylori positive. Recent evidence suggests that H. pylori infection could cause IDA in the absence of peptic ulcer or other upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding lesions

Endogenous ochronosis.

Endogenous ochronosis or alkaptonuria is a rare, autosomal recessive disease of tyrosine metabolism that is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme homogentisic acid oxidase. The disease results in the accumulation and deposition of homogentisic acid in the cartilage, eyelids, forehead, cheeks, axillae, genital region, buccal mucosa, larynx, tympanic membranes, and tendons. The disease generally presents in adults with arthritis and skin abnormalities; occasionally, involvement of other organs may be seen. A 49-year-old man was referred to our clinic with verrucous lesions on his hands. On physic

L-dehydroascorbic acid can substitute l-ascorbic acid as dietary vitamin C source in guinea pigs.

Vitamin C deficiency globally affects several hundred million people and has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in numerous studies. In this study, bioavailability of the oxidized form of vitamin C (l-dehydroascorbic acid or DHA)-commonly found in vitamin C containing food products prone to oxidation-was studied. Our aim was to compare tissue accumulation of vitamin C in guinea pigs receiving different oral doses of either ascorbate or DHA. In all tissues tested (plasma, liver, spleen, lung, adrenal glands, kidney, muscle, heart, and brain), only sporadic differences in vit

Ozone-induced tissue injury and changes in antioxidant homeostasis in normal and ascorbate-deficient guinea pigs.

It has been reported previously that ozone (O3) toxicity from acute (4 hr) exposure is enhanced by ascorbate (AH2) deficiency in guinea pigs. We hypothesized that lung injury from continuous 1-week O3 exposure would also be increased under conditions of AH2 deficiency because of (1) a diminished antioxidant pool to counteract the oxidant challenge, (2) impaired reparation of tissue injury, and/or (3) altered antioxidant redox homeostasis. Female Hartley guinea pigs (260-330 g) were made AH2 deficient by providing a diet similar to guinea pig chow, but having no AH2. The dietary regimen was sta

Haemolysis and methaemoglobinaemia following naphthalene ball ingestion.

Naphthalene poisoning is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of haemolysis and methaemoglobinaemia due to severe oxidative stress. We report a case of a previously healthy man in his 30s who presented at the emergency department with scleral icterus, peripheral oxygen saturation of 85% on pulse oximetry, haemoglobinuria and chocolate-coloured blood following the accidental ingestion of a 'white air freshener ball'. Arterial blood gas analysis revealed elevated methaemoglobin (MetHb) levels. Laboratory results showed severe haemolysis. Bedside solubility and flotation tests on the whi

Exploring the Possible Link Between Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, and Methemoglobinemia.

One of the most widespread enzymopathies affecting human beings is glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, which is brought on by inherited mutations in the X-linked gene. Red blood cells (RBCs) with a G6PD deficiency are more sensitive to oxidative assault and consequently to hemolysis. There are more than 200 known G6PD mutations, of which around half are polymorphic and thus prevalent in a variety of populations. We present a case of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), with severe hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, treated for

[Enzymatic activity of the microsomal fraction of the mucosa of the small intestine in guinea pigs with vitamin D and C deficiencies].

The influence of vitamin D and C deficiency on the kinetic parameters of sucrase and alkali phosphatase activities was studied in the microsomal fraction of the small intestinal mucosa of guinea pigs. It was found that Km values for these enzymes did not depend on the animal providing with these vitamins. Deficiency of one of these vitamins did not influence sucrase activity, however, simultaneous elimination of vitamins D and C resulted in the activity rise by 92%. Alkali phosphatase and Ca-ATPase activities proved to be similarly dependent on providing with vitamin D in the presence of vitam

Vitamin C: the nontoxic, nonrate-limited, antioxidant free radical scavenger.

The amount of oral ascorbic acid that a patient can tolerate without diarrhea, increases somewhat proportionately to the "toxicity" of his disease. Clinically, in a disease ameliorated by ascorbate, there is a suppression of symptoms only with very high doses and approximately to that extent which a nonrate-limited, antioxidant free radical scavenger, might be expected to affect that disease process if all harmful free radicals and highly reactive oxidizing substances were quenched. In most pathologic processes, the rate at which free radicals and highly reactive oxidants are produced, exceeds

Role of biological antioxidants in benzanthrone toxicity.

Previous studies indicate that benzanthrone, an anthraquinone dye intermediate, caused significant depletion of ascorbic acid (AsA). In this investigation the effect of benzanthrone on the status of different forms of AsA and other bio-antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH) was studied. Oral administration of benzanthrone (50, 125 or 250 mg/kg body weight) resulted in a significant increase of urinary AsA levels with a concomitant decrease in the urinary dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) content in both rats and guinea-pigs. Benzanthrone caused a dose-dependent decrease in hepatic, adrenal and serum

Is GERD a Factor in Osteonecrosis of the Jaw? Evidence of Pathology Linked to G6PD Deficiency and Sulfomucins.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a rare side effect of bisphosphonate therapy, is a debilitating disorder with a poorly understood etiology. FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) provides the opportunity to investigate this disease. Our goals were to analyze FAERS data to discover possible relationships between ONJ and specific conditions and drugs and then to consult the scientific literature to deduce biological explanations. Our methodology revealed a very strong association between gastroesophageal reflux and bisphosphonate-induced ONJ, suggesting acidosis as a key factor. Overgrowth

A combined deficiency of vitamins E and C causes severe central nervous system damage in guinea pigs.

A short period of combined deficiency of vitamins E and C causes profound central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction in guinea pigs. For this report, CNS histopathology was studied to define the nature and extent of injury caused by this double deficiency. Weanling guinea pigs were fed a vitamin E-deficient or -replete diet for 14 d. Then vitamin C was withdrawn from the diet of some guinea pigs. Four diet groups were thus formed: replete, vitamin E deficient, vitamin C deficient, and both vitamin E and C deficient. From 5 to 11 d after institution of the doubly deficient diet, 9 of 12 guinea pi
