[Posturographic biofeedback training in equilibrium disorders].

In addition to the usual physical training for treatment of ataxia, individually adaptable biofeedback training programs by means of a stationary posturographic platform and feedback via the screen of a connected microcomputer were developed, including not only static, but especially dynamic exercises. Through an open randomised study of 72 patients with ataxia of cerebellar, brainstem and vestibular origin the effect of this training was examined by analysing the training courses parameters, which were compared with the courses of 10 normal subjects, and by the patient and the physician ratin

Chronic pain: its treatment in geriatric and younger patients.

The response of geriatric patients to a multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program was measured by comparing outcome data on 17 older patients (55 to 78 years) to data on 20 younger patients (29 to 48 years) treated in the same program. Pretreatment data were obtained at an initial evaluation, and posttreatment data were obtained at the most recent follow-up contact, usually at 12 months after treatment. Treatment outcome was assessed on the basis of eight quantitative measures: pain ratings; health care utilization; activity tolerance; daily "up time"; hours per week spent in paid

Long-term treatment of severe dysarthria: a case study.

This case study describes the long-term treatment and changing symptoms in a single subject with dysarthria secondary to basilar artery thrombosis. Initially, the subject was anarthric. Treatment efforts thereafter were directed toward modifying speech respiration, velopharyngeal function, articulatory precision, speech intensity, and speech intelligibility. A variety of treatment and measurement techniques are illustrated. The behavioral change resulting from each of the treatments was small. However, when combined, these small gains in conjunction with some neurological recovery resulted in

Coping with oral surgery by self-efficacy enhancement and perceptions of control.

Recent work has suggested that patients' coping could be improved in stressful dental situations if perceptions of self-efficacy and control could be enhanced. To test this hypothesis, 70 first-time third-molar extraction patients were randomly assigned to one of four surgery preparation conditions: standard preparation, oral premedication, relaxation, and a relaxation+efficacy-enhancing feed-back condition in which subjects were given false galvanic skin response (GSR) biofeedback leading them to believe that they were highly skilled at relaxing. Analyses indicated that: (1) all treatments we

[Multimodal therapy of functional gastrointestinal disorders].

A multimodal approach is state-of-the art for effective treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGD) like irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. Based on the now established view that the pathogenesis of FGD is multicausal, evidence-based therapeutic options comprise education about the nature of the disorder, dietary modifications, relaxation techniques, behavioral changes, and pharmacological treatments. These therapies are variously combined depending on the severity of the FGD and the individual needs of the patient. Our overview portrays the options for the therapy

Efficacy of Game-Based EMG-Biofeedback Therapy in Post-Stroke Dysphagia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of game-based electromyography (EMG)-biofeedback therapy on swallowing functions and quality of life in patients with post-stroke dysphagia. This prospective, assessor-blind, randomized controlled trial included 33 patients with post-stroke dysphagia. The study group performed the Mendelsohn maneuver and effortful swallow using game-based EMG-biofeedback, while the control group performed the same tasks with only verbal feedback for 30 min across a total of 15 sessions. In addition, both groups received oral motor exercises and thermal-tacti

Immediate Biochemical Changes After Gait Biofeedback in Individuals With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

CONTEXT: Gait biomechanics are linked to biochemical changes that contribute to the development of posttraumatic knee osteoarthritis in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). It remains unknown if modifying peak loading during gait using real-time biofeedback will result in acute biochemical changes related to cartilage metabolism. OBJECTIVE: To determine if acutely manipulating peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during gait influences acute changes in serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein concentration (sCOMP) among individuals with ACLR. DESIGN: Cros

Efficacy of biofeedback, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and pelvic floor muscle training for female neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic bladder dysfunction is prevalent in female patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), and previous guidelines have recommended pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) for first-line conservative treatment. However, the actual regimen of PFMT varies widely and the single treatment does not satisfy the need of some patients. Therefore, this study aims to provide a detailed rationale and methodology for comparing the effectiveness of PFMT, biofeedback and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as adjunct treatments for neurogenic bladder dysfunction. METHODS AND AN

Enhancing the efficacy of integrative improvisational music therapy in the treatment of depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Not all people with depression respond adequately to standard treatments. An innovative therapy that has shown promising results in controlled trials is music therapy. Based on a previous trial that suggested beneficial effects of integrative improvisational music therapy (IIMT) on short and medium-term depression symptoms as well as anxiety and functioning, this trial aims to determine potential mechanisms of and improvements in its effects by examining specific variations of IIMT. METHODS/DESIGN: A 2 × 2 factorial r

Lumbatex: A Wearable Monitoring System Based on Inertial Sensors to Measure and Control the Lumbar Spine Motion.

Measuring the curvature of the lumbar spine is an important challenge in disciplines related to physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine seeking to solve the incidence of the low back pain and other spinal disorders in the population. In clinical practice, most of the methods used are manual or depend on the trained eye of the specialist who is measuring. We have developed Lumbatex: an integrated system based on inertial sensors integrated into a wearable textile device. This device is connected via Bluetooth to software, which interprets data from the sensors and provides real-ti

Home-based versus office-based biofeedback therapy for constipation with dyssynergic defecation: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Office-based biofeedback therapy is effective for constipation with dyssynergic defecation, but must be performed by skilled staff, is only available in selected centres, and requires multiple visits. The efficacy of home-based biofeedback therapy is unknown. We compared clinical and subjective outcomes with home-based and office-based approaches. METHODS: In this randomised controlled trial, eligible patients were adult outpatients (age 18-80 years) who met the Rome III criteria for functional constipation and who had been referred to a tertiary-care centre after non-response to

Constipation: Pathophysiology and Current Therapeutic Approaches.

Chronic constipation is a common, persistent condition affecting many patients worldwide, presenting significant economic burden and resulting in substantial healthcare utilization. In addition to infrequent bowel movements, the definition of constipation includes excessive straining, a sense of incomplete evacuation, failed or lengthy attempts to defecate, use of digital manoeuvres for evacuation of stool, abdominal bloating, and hard consistency of stools. After excluding secondary causes of constipation, chronic idiopathic or primary constipation can be classified as functional defecation d

A Human-Humanoid Interaction Through the Use of BCI for Locked-In ALS Patients Using Neuro-Biological Feedback Fusion.

This paper illustrates a new architecture for a human-humanoid interaction based on EEG-brain computer interface (EEG-BCI) for patients affected by locked-in syndrome caused by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The proposed architecture is able to recognise users' mental state accordingly to the biofeedback factor , based on users' attention, intention, and focus, that is used to elicit a robot to perform customised behaviours. Experiments have been conducted with a population of eight subjects: four ALS patients in a near locked-in status with normal ocular movement and four healthy contro

Haptic feedback enhances grip force control of sEMG-controlled prosthetic hands in targeted reinnervation amputees.

In this study, we hypothesized that haptic feedback would enhance grip force control of surface electromyography (sEMG)-controlled prosthetic hands for targeted reinnervation (TR) amputees. A new miniature haptic device, a tactor, that can deliver touch, pressure, shear, and temperature sensation, allows modality-matching haptic feedback. TR surgery that creates sensory regions on the patient's skin that refer to the surface of the missing limb allows somatotopic-matching haptic feedback. This paper evaluates the hypothesis via an sEMG-controlled virtual prosthetic arm operated by TR amputees

Treatment of interstitial cystitis with hydrodistention and bladder training.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hydrodistention (HD) and bladder training for interstitial cystitis (IC). From 1997 to 2006, 361 consecutive IC patients were treated by HD, followed by bladder training. Each patient was followed up using a diary for 8 weeks after HD weekly and monthly thereafter. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated using the average of the voided volumes and the voiding frequency. The mean +/- standard deviation of the pre-HD daytime voided volumes and voiding frequency were 110.0 +/- 47.0 ml and 14.7 +/- 11.0, respectively. Furthermore, the nocturnal valu
