OBJECTIVE: Long-term stable fixation of the leg to the remaining ilium or sacrum following internal hemipelvectomy including resection of the acetabulum.
INDICATIONS: Bone sarcomas, soft tissue sarcomas infiltrating the bone, solitary late metastases, acetabular reconstruction failure.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Palliative treatment goal, mutilating resection (especially when the tumor extends beyond the midline of the sacrum).

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of distraction osteogenesis of mandibular ramus in correcting hemifacial microsomia.
METHODS: From December 1997 to March 2000 two kinds of mandibular distractors made in Germany and China were used in 11 cases with hemifacial microsomia aged 4.5 approximately 23 years (on average 14.1 years). External fixation has long been used for limb lengthening but can result in many complications, such as tethering of the soft tissues, pain, decreased joint motion, scarring, and nerve injury. Six consecutive patients with infected intra-articular fractures of the distal tibia were studied. They were treated with resection of all infected or necrotic bone, systemic antibiotics, and instrumentation with a small pin fixator (Ilizarov external fixator).
