Computed Tomographic Patterns of Traumatic Brain Injury in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where road traffic accidents constitute a significant public health burden. Neuroimaging, especially computed tomography (CT), plays a pivotal role in the early diagnosis, management, and prognostication of TBI. Understanding the spectrum of neuroimaging findings in affected patients is essential for improving patient care and resource allocation, which is the aim of this study. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective descriptive study reviewed cranial

Cellular inflammatory response associated with breakdown of the blood-brain barrier after closed head injury in rats.

This study reports a widespread microglial response characterized by an upregulation of surface antigens, such as complement type 3 receptors (CR3) and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigens on these cells following closed head injury. Increased expression of CR3 (OX-42) and MHC class II antigens (OX-6) was observed in rats killed at 1, 3, and 5 days after injury. Intense OX-42 immunoreactivity was observed in microglial cells throughout the brain with a smaller number of them being OX-6 positive. In addition to microglial reaction, astrocytic activation reflected in cellular

Microstructural brain changes following prospective memory rehabilitation in traumatic brain injury: An observational study.

Prospective memory (PM) impairment is a common consequence of moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Compensatory strategy training and rehabilitation (COMP) is the usual treatment of PM deficits through environmental modification and the use of assistive methods such as diaries and routines. The study intends to examine the changes in white matter integrity, as measured by advanced diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) following COMP intervention in moderate-severe TBI patients. Nine COMP intervention and twelve routine care comparison cohort moderate-severe TBI patients were rec

[Dynamics of morphofunctional state of central nervous system in white rates exposed to vibration].

The authors presented results of experimental studies assessing influence of vibration on white rats. Dynamics of morphologic changes development in brain of experimental animals exposed to vibration were shown. Exposure to vibration in white rats daily during 4 hours over 15 days causes astrogliosis--compensation process in response to brain injury; over 1 month--causes morphologic brain changes (vacuoles formation in neuropile, decrease in astroglia cells number); over 2 months--causes lower plasticity of brain neurons, preserved astrogliosis; over 4 months--causes perivascular edema. Change

Reading impairment after neonatal hypoglycemia with parieto-temporo-occipital injury without cortical blindness: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal brain injury may lead to later neurodevelopmental disorders, whose outcomes may vary due to neuroplasticity in young children. Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that the left parietotemporal area (which includes the left inferior parietal lobe) is associated with phonological awareness and decoding skills, which are essential skills for reading acquisition in children. However, the literature on the effect of perinatal cerebral injury on the development of phonological awareness or decoding ability in childhood is limited. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of an 8-ye

Chronic neurological deficits in mice after perinatal hypoxia and ischemia correlate with hemispheric tissue loss and white matter injury detected by MRI.

We investigated the effects of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) on brain injury and neurological functional outcome at postnatal day (P)30 through P90. HI was induced by exposing P9 mice to 8% O(2) for 55 min using the Vannucci HI model. Following HI, mice were treated with either vehicle control or Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 1 (NHE1) inhibitor HOE 642. The animals were examined by the accelerating rotarod test at P30 and the Morris water maze (MWM) test at P60. T(2)-weighted MRI was conducted at P90. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was subsequently performed in ex vivo brains, followed by imm

Assessing human scalp and brain blood flow sensitivities via superficial temporal artery occlusion using speckle contrast optical spectroscopy.

Cerebral blood flow is a critical metric for cerebrovascular monitoring, with applications in stroke detection, brain injury evaluation, aging, and neurological disorders. Noninvasively measuring cerebral blood dynamics is challenging due to the presence of scalp and skull, which obstruct direct brain access and contain their own blood dynamics that must be isolated. We developed an aggregated seven-channel speckle contrast optical spectroscopy (SCOS) system to measure blood flow and blood volume noninvasively. Each channel, with a distinct source-to-detector distance, targeted different depth

Quantitative diffusion tensor imaging in cerebral palsy due to periventricular white matter injury.

Periventricular white matter injury (PWI) is a major form of brain injury observed in congenital hemiparesis. The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fibre tracking in delineating the primary and secondary degenerative changes in cerebral white matter and deep grey matter in patients with spastic cerebral palsy due to PWI and to look for any possible reorganization of the axonal architecture. Five hemiparetic cerebral palsy patients (median age 14 years) with known PWI were prospectively studied with DTI of the brain at 1.5T and quantitatively

Etiology of impaired selective motor control: emerging evidence and its implications for research and treatment in cerebral palsy.

Selective motor control (SMC) impairment involves movement patterns dominated by flexor or extensor synergies that interfere with functional movements in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Emerging evidence on neural correlates of impaired SMC has important implications for etiology and for the treatment for children with CP. Early evidence on the microstructure of brain white matter assessed with diffusion tensor imaging in adult patients after stroke suggests that the rubrospinal tract may compensate for injury to the corticospinal tract. Furthermore, the observed changes on diffusion tensor

Morphological and hemodynamic magnetic resonance assessment of early neonatal brain injury in a piglet model.

PURPOSE: To investigate the utility of functional and morphological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the extent of brain injury in a hypoxia-ischemia (HI) piglet model and further to validate that the desired ischemic injury was successfully induced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI was performed at 1.5 T in anesthetized piglets (N = 10, age = 12-36 hours). Relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF), time-to-peak (TTP) contrast, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were estimated at different time points pre-, during, and post-HI. The effect following bilateral clamping of the carotid arteri

A Case of Delayed-Onset Posthypoxic Leukoencephalopathy in a Pediatric Patient.

We present a 16-year-old female status post traumatic brain injury from severe motor vehicle crash with prolonged extrication. Initially with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 4 and blood pressure of 80/40, she required emergent intubation. Head computed tomography was notable for skull fracture with hematoma, diffuse axonal injury, and 6-mm midline shift with right uncal herniation. On hospital day 1, she underwent decompressive R hemicraniectomy. She received neuroprotective treatment including a hypocarbic, hypernatremic state with close blood pressure monitoring for appropriate cerebral perfusion. O

Connectivity of the ventral visual cortex is necessary for object recognition in patients.

The functional profiles of regions in the ventral occipital-temporal cortex (VTC), a critical region for object visual recognition, are associated with the VTC connectivity patterns to nonvisual regions relevant to the corresponding object domain. However, whether and how whole-brain connections affect recognition behavior remains untested. We directly examined the necessity of VTC connectivity in object recognition behavior by testing 82 patients whose lesion spared relevant VTC regions but affected various white matter (WM) tracts and other regions. In these patients, we extracted the whole-

Probabilistic mapping and automated segmentation of human brainstem white matter bundles.

Brainstem white matter (WM) bundles are essential conduits for neural signals that modulate homeostasis and consciousness. Their architecture forms the anatomic basis for brainstem connectomics, subcortical circuit models, and deep brain navigation tools. However, their small size and complex morphology, compared to cerebral WM, makes mapping and segmentation challenging in neuroimaging. As a result, fundamental questions about brainstem modulation of human homeostasis and consciousness remain unanswered. We leverage diffusion MRI tractography to create BrainStem Bundle Tool (BSBT), which auto

Brain MR Elastography Metrics Associated with Alterations in Learning and Memory in People with HIV.

High prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment persists despite effective antiretroviral therapy. While conventional neuroimaging often fails to fully explain cognitive deficits in virally suppressed people with HIV (PWH), magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) offers a novel approach to quantify microstructural tissue coherence through brain biomechanics. This study investigated whether MRE-derived biomechanical metrics exhibit a pathological, group-specific relationship with cognitive performance in PWH, and compared their sensitivity against advanced diffusion MRI and peripheral
