Porous keratin scaffold-promising biomaterial for tissue engineering and drug delivery.

A porous keratin scaffold, prepared from the reduced keratin solution, has shown good cell viability which makes it a potential candidate for cell seeding. An aqueous solution of reduced keratin was extracted from horn meal using a mixture of urea, sodium dodecyl sulfate, mercaptoethanol, and water at 60 degrees C. The molecular mass of the extracted keratin is found to be ranging between 225 and 150 KDa. The CD spectrum of aqueous solution of keratin shows the presence of infinity-helical structure with beta-turns as negative absorption band at 225 nm and as positive absorption band at 195 nm

Formulation and physicochemical characterization of microemulsion system using isopropyl myristate, medium-chain glyceride, polysorbate 80 and water.

The phase behavior of the system isopropyl myristate/medium-chain glyceride/polysorbate 80/water forming both w/o and o/w microemulsions has been studied to develop microemulsion comprising of pharmaceutical excipients. The pseudo-ternary phase diagrams with large monophasic zones and gel formation were realized and several compositions were identified in the phase diagram for rheological, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and calorimetric measurements. The identified systems at different temperatures behaved as Newtonian fluid and the activation parameters for their viscous flow were evaluated.

Platelet and adipocyte thermogenesis in hypothyroid patients: a microcalorimetric study.

Direct microcalorimetry was used for measurements of heat production in cell suspensions of platelets and adipocytes, obtained from hypothyroid patients before and after 3 months on full L-thyroxine substitution. Platelet heat production was significantly lower than normal before treatment and increased in all 10 patients studied; the mean value increased from 51.3 +/- 1.6 fW/cell before to 57.1 +/- 1.8 fW/cell after therapy (P less than 0.001).
