This study deals with the enteropathy recently identified in diabetes-prone BB rats (BBdp). Diabetes-resistant BB rats (BBc) and BBdp rats were fed from days 32-39 onward either a protective diabetes-retardant hydrolyzed casein diet (HC) or a plant-based diabetogenic (NTP) diet. In this paper we show that the cleavage of fodrin to a 150 kDa fragment is an early proteolytic event in radiation-induced apoptosis in the Burkitts' Lymphoma cell line BL30A and requires 100 microM zVAD-fmk for inhibition. Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) is the most common of the human mandibulofacial dysostosis disorders. Recently, a partial TCOF1 cDNA was identified and shown to contain mutations in TCS families. Here we present the entire exon/intron genomic structure and the complete coding sequence of TCOF1. TCOF1 encodes a low complexity protein of 1,411 amino acids, whose predicted protein structure reveals repeated motifs that mirror the organization of its exons. Extracellular proteases of Actinomyces pyogenes were assayed by zymography on SDS-polyacrylamide gel with the concentrated culture supernatant of 7 isolates from pigs and cows. An anticoagulant proteinase, lebetase, was isolated from the venom of Vipera lebetina by gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography. The proteinase consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 23,700. Amino acid analysis indicates that lebetase contains 214 residues. A high molecular weight protease inhibitor was purified from the egg white of Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer). It inhibited the casein hydrolyzing activity of trypsin, subtilisin and papain. Charcoal-yeast extract agar is a new bacteriological medium that supports excellent growth of the Legionella pneumophila.
