The effect of naloxone, opiate antagonist, was investigated on systemic arterial blood pressure(BP), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cerebral oxygen consumption in the cat brain following occlusion of the middle cerebral artery(MCA). Conjunctival swab specimens were obtained from both eyes of 43 horses, 25 cows, 50 dogs, and 25 cats without keratitis or other ophthalmologic problems. Fungi were isolated from 95% of the horses, 100% of the cows, 22% of the dogs, and 40% of the cats. Aspergillus spp were isolated from 56% of the horses, 12% of the cows, 8% of the cats, and none of the dogs. Penicillium spp and Cladosporium spp were isolated ubiquitously. Collectively, 28 species from 209 isolants were identified.

The effect of an intracerebroventricular injection of an antimuscarinic drug, ganglionic blocking agent, alpha and beta adrenergic blocking drug, antiserotonin agent or antihistamine upon salivation produced by nicotine similarly injected in the cat was investigated. Endogenous opiates have been reported to have detrimental effects on the circulatory system during hemorrhagic shock. However, the specific opiate receptor subtype which mediates these actions has not been defined. In the present study, we have utilized the mixed agonist/antagonist, nalorphine (N-allylnormorphine), which exhibits kappa (kappa) and sigma (sigma) receptor agonism as well as mu (mu) receptor antagonism, to investigate the role of the mu receptor in hemorrhagic shock. Small intestinal blood flow was measured by carbonized microsphere distribution and electromagnetic flowmetry. Hemorrhage, 15 ml/kg induced a rapid fall of blood pressure in intact and anephric cats, but only intact cats demonstrated significant blood pressure recovery following bleeding. Naloxone, 0.1 mg/kg x min, i.v., had a mild promoting effect on blood pressure recovery in the intact cats whereas, in the hemorrhaged anephric cats naloxone re-established an almost complete recovery of blood pressure. These results suggest that endogenous opioid substances play a significant depressor role in hemorrhagic shock, especially in anephric animals.

Three Siamese cats were found to have a progressive neurological disease that became obvious when they were 4 to 5 months of age. Their brains contained an excess of GM2 and GM3 gangliosides, and their livers a nine- to tenfold excess of sphingomyelin and cholesterol. A total deficiency of lysosomal (pH 5.0) sphingomyelinase was found in the leukocytes, liver, and brain of the cats, although the activity of the microsomal (pH 7.4, magnesium-dependent) sphingomyelinase was normal in brain. These cats appear to have a genetic disease identical to Niemann-Pick disease type A.

Information of the frequency and morphological characteristics of spontaneous hemoblastoses in dogs and cats observed in 1966-1978 are presented. Hemoblastoses were diagnosed in 90 dogs and 12 cats.
