Synthesis and application of cucumber extract-loaded hydrogels based on oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose and alginate as vitreous replacements.

Retinal detachment is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, with current treatments using silicone oil or expanded gases to facilitate reattachment. Polymeric hydrogels are a promising alternative due to their optical clarity, rheological properties, and biodegradability. In this study, we synthesized polymeric hydrogels by crosslinking oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate with calcium chloride and introduced cucumber extract, a plant-based antioxidant rich in flavonoids and phenolics, known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The resultant hydrogels demonstrated a swelling…

Optimisation of the Ethanol Fermentation Process Using Hydrothermal Pretreatment of Cellulose Waste-Effect of Fermentation Pattern and Strain.

Suitable fermentation substrates and fermentation modes can effectively improve the fermentation ethanol yield. In this study, we optimised the hydrothermal pretreatment conditions by orthogonal optimisation using waste tissue paper as substrate. These conditions consisted of 50 min duration in a high-pressure reactor with pure water as solvent at a temperature of 160 °C. The biomass to water ratio was maintained at a constant level. The cellulose content of the pretreated TP was 81.19 ± 4.06%, which was an increase of 21.59% compared to the blank control. The 72 h reducing sugar yield of pret…

Aggressive osteoblastoma of the cervical spine and resultant complication due to swollen oxidized regenerated cellulose: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteoblastomas, although rare, are benign primary bone tumors, with cervical spine involvement being exceptionally uncommon. Late diagnosis, especially in aggressive cases, can lead to surgical challenges. Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) used for hemostasis may result in complications if left in the surgical field. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old female presented with six months of intractable neck pain accompanied by swelling, hindering proximal right upper extremity evaluation. Motor strength was intact distally, with normal reflexes and no hypoesthesia. Imaging revealed a …

Exploring Microemulsion Systems for the Incorporation of Glucocorticoids into Bacterial Cellulose: A Novel Approach for Anti-Inflammatory Wound Dressings.

The effective pharmacological treatment of inflamed wounds such as pyoderma gangraenosum remains challenging, as the systemic application of suitable drugs such as glucocorticoids is compromised by severe side effects and the inherent difficulties of wounds as drug targets. Furthermore, conventional semi-solid formulations are not suitable for direct application to open wounds. Thus, the treatment of inflamed wounds could considerably benefit from the development of active wound dressings for the topical administration of anti-inflammatory drugs. Although bacterial cellulose appears to be an i…

A fractionation strategy of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from wheat straw via the biphasic pretreatment for biomass valorization.

Developing an environmentally friendly and efficient pretreatment to utilize wheat straw is essential to a sustainable future. An acid biphasic system with 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) organic solvent and dilute p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) were employed for the simultaneous fractionation of three components. Results showed that the biphasic system had excellent cellulose protection and high removal of hemicellulose and lignin. In detail, Under the optimal conditions (0.1 M p-TsOH, 2-MeTHF: H2O = 1:1 (v:v), 140 °C, 3 h), mostly cellulose retained in the residues (95.69%), 57.18% of lig…

Chitosan Reinforced with Kenaf Nanocrystalline Cellulose as an Effective Carrier for the Delivery of Platelet Lysate in the Acceleration of Wound Healing.

The clinical use of platelet lysate (PL) in the treatment of wounds is limited by its rapid degradation by proteases at the tissue site. This research aims to develop a chitosan (CS) and kenaf nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) hydrogel composite, which intend to stabilize PL and control its release onto the wound site for prolonged action. NCC was synthesized from raw kenaf bast fibers and incorporated into the CS hydrogel. The physicochemical properties, in vitro cytocompatibility, cell proliferation, wound scratch assay, PL release, and CS stabilizing effect of the hydrogel composites were ana…

Metal nanoparticles supported chitosan coated carboxymethyl cellulose beads as a catalyst for the selective removal of 4-nitrophenol.

In the area of water pollution treatment, the coupling of biopolymers with metal/metal nanoparticles is getting a lot of interest these days. Herein, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) beads and chitosan (Cs) coated CMC beads were employed as a support for copper nanoparticles, (Cu/CMC) and (Cu/Cs@CMC), respectively. Following that, a reducing agent (NaBH4) was used to convert Cu/CMC and Cu/Cs@CMC beads to zero valent. The developed beads were employed for catalytic reductions of nitrophenol, dyes, and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) in their mixed solution with NaBH4. Cu/Cs@CMC beads were more ef…

Dual-drug delivery system based on the hydrogels of alginate and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose for colorectal cancer treatment.

To improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and relieve the pain associated with colorectal cancer, a dual-drug delivery system (DDDS) is proposed. In this system, methotrexate (MTX) loaded CaCO3 (CaCO3/MTX) and aspirin (Asp) are co-entrapped in the hydrogels of alginate (Alg) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) crosslinked with Ca2+. The hydrogels can protect the anti-cancer drug of MTX from being absorbed in stomach and small intestine and ensure their efficacy at the target site of colorectum. More importantly, dual pH-responsive drug delivery can be achieved by the DDDS. Because the pH va…

Habituation to thaxtomin A in hybrid poplar cell suspensions provides enhanced and durable resistance to inhibitors of cellulose synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Thaxtomin A (TA), a phytotoxin produced by the phytopathogen Streptomyces scabies, is essential for the development of potato common scab disease. TA inhibits cellulose synthesis but its actual mode of action is unknown. Addition of TA to hybrid poplar (Populus trichocarpa x Populus deltoides) cell suspensions can activate a cellular program leading to cell death. In contrast, it is possible to habituate hybrid poplar cell cultures to grow in the presence of TA levels that would normally induce cell death. The purpose of this study is to characterize TA-habituated cells and the mec…
