OBJECTIVE: Association between Intellectual disability (ID) and psychiatric disorders in children & adolescents is well established but there is a paucity of published studies from Pakistan on this topic. The main aim of the study was to assess the frequency of ICD-10 psychiatric diagnosis in the hospital outpatient sample of children with ID in Lahore, Pakistan as well as to find out which challenging behaviors, caregivers find difficult to manage in this setup.
METHODS: Socio-demographic information was collected, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised & ICD-10 diagnostic criteria

Exploratory play is one of the most vital ways in which children learn about their environment and develop. It is well documented that limited mobility restricts a child's ability to engage in their environment through exploratory play. In this study, a qualitative, collective case study design explored the impact of powered mobility on the exploratory play of two children with physical disabilities. Data were collected from the children, their parents and their siblings through participant observation and in-depth, informal interviews. This paper focuses on two themes: Opportunity to Play rev

BACKGROUND: Wheelchairs for disabled children (≤ 18 years) can provide health, developmental and social benefits. World Health Organisation and United Kingdom Government reports demonstrate the need for improved access to wheelchairs both locally and internationally. The use of health economics within this field is lacking. Provision of wheelchairs based on cost-effectiveness evidence is not currently possible. We conducted the first systematic review in this field to incorporate evidence of effectiveness, service user perspectives, policy intentions and cost-effectiveness in order to develop

BACKGROUND: People with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PMLD) have communication impairments as one defining characteristic.
AIMS: To explore speech and language therapists' (SLTs) decision making in communication interventions for people with PMLD, in terms of the intervention approaches used, the factors informing the decisions to use specific interventions and the extent to which the rationales underpinning these decisions related to the components of evidence based practice (EBP), namely empirical evidence, clinical experience and client/carer views and values.

The current study investigated morphological differences in the corpus callosum in children ages 8 to 18 years old with nonverbal learning disability (NLD; n = 19), high-functioning autism (HFA; n = 23), predominantly inattentive ADHD (ADHD:PI; n = 23), and combined type ADHD (ADHD:C; n = 25), as well as those demonstrating typical development (n = 57). Midsagittal area of the corpus callosum and five midsagittal anterior-to-posterior corpus callosum segments were examined using magnetic resonance imaging. Controlling for midsagittal brain area and age, no group differences were found for tota

BACKGROUND: Children are motivated to engage in stereotypic and repetitive behaviours for a number of reasons. Their motivation seems to change according to context, but little empirical evidence supports that observation. Interventions designed to reduce the behaviours may be improved by an increased understanding of the interaction between motivation and context.
METHOD: Using Rasch analysis, we analysed data describing stereotypic behaviours from 279 Revised Motivation Assessment Scales (MAS:R). Data were gathered from two groups of children: Group 1 with intellectual disability (n = 37) a

BACKGROUND: Pediatric rehabilitation considers Family-centered service (FCS) as a way to increase participation of children with a physical disability in daily life. An important principal is that parents greatly contribute to their child's participation at school, at home, and in the community. However, it is unclear what kind of information is available from literature about what parents actually do to support their child's participation and what problems and needs they experience? Hence, the aim of this study was to provide an overview of the actions, challenges, and needs of parents in ena

BACKGROUND: No studies have prospectively examined disabling sequelae and quality of life in children with bacterial meningitis in Sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Objectives were to (i) follow-up pediatric bacterial meningitis surveillance system children from urban Dakar, Senegal; (ii) use standardized tools to classify disabling sequelae (Global Burden of Disease classification system) and quality of life (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory tool); and (iii) compare these sequelae with an age- and community-matched control group.
RESULTS: Sixty-six cases and 66 controls had follow-up examinat

Prenatal tobacco smoke exposure has been implicated as a risk factor for cognitive deficits in children. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between prenatal tobacco smoke exposure and diagnosis of intellectual disabilities (ID) among 8-year-old children living in Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Utah. In 2002 and 2004, 965 ID case children were identified through a surveillance network and compared with the population of children born in the surveillance region during the same period (n = 104 607). Prenatal tobacco smoke exposure was determined from birth certificates

Unintentional injury is one of the leading causes for mortality in childhood. Choking or the interruption of respiration by internal obstruction of the airway, usually by food or small toys, is such a case. The present study was conducted to examine choking-related deaths from 1991-2005 among children with intellectual disability younger than 18 years of age living in residential care centers in Israel. The data for this study were obtained from the Office of the Medical Director (OMD), Division for Mental Retardation (DMR), Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services. Every case of death i

OBJECTIVE: To identify child and family factors that predict DSM-IV disorders in children with intellectual disability.
METHOD: In 1997, a total of 968 6- to 18-year-olds were randomly selected from Dutch schools for intellectual disability (response 69.3%). Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist, Developmental Behavior Checklist, Vineland Screener, and instruments addressing their child's physical health, family functioning, and parental mental health. One year later, parents of 474 children, randomly selected from the 1997 participants (response 86.8%), completed the anxiety, mood,

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of event-related potential (ERP) of reading disabilities (RD) in children under the condition of continuous performance test (CPT) and their possible neurological basis.
METHODS: Using ERP technique with CPT conditions, such as semantics, direction and pitch identification, 16 RD boys and their matched normal boys were tested. A comparative study was conducted to analyze these indicators of accuracy, reaction time, false alarm, wave amplitude and latency between the two groups.
RESULTS: Among the three kinds of identification tests, RD children h

The present study assessed 486 first-quarter first graders on their reading and phonological-processing skills and intelligence. Based on this assessment, and using the classification data from Hurford et al.'s (1993) study, 99 children were identified as being at risk for reading difficulties: 53 children at risk for reading disabilities (RD) and 46 children at risk for becoming "garden-variety" poor readers (GV). Half of the RD and GV groups received the phonological-processing intervention. Posttraining assessment indicated that the training procedure not only was effective in increasing th

In two experiments, critical a priori tests compared four competing LD theories of maladaptive language lateralization (Poor Structural Lateralization; Excessive RH Activation; Excessive LH Activation; Excessive LH or RH Activation). In Experiment 1, 32 auditory-linguistic LD children from public schools were compared to 32 high-achieving, age-matched controls. Experiment 2 replicated the main findings of Experiment 1 by comparing 14 LD children to 14 controls attending a private school. The effect of priming or ear order was analyzed in a directed attention, dichotic paradigm with strings of

The effects of various combinations of modalities with the dimensions of space and time on reproduction of stimulus patterns by 162 normal and 83 reading-disabled children aged 6 to 12 yr. was studied. Scores on three subtests with three different combinations of modalities with space and time dimensions were analyzed. They were visual temporal input, vocal temporal output; auditory temporal input, vocal temporal output; and visual spatial-temporal input, vocal temporal output. Visual spatial-temporal input was superior to the other subtests. Auditory temporal input was superior to visual temp

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed unprecedented service interruptions in many sectors including services for children and youth with neuro-developmental disabilities (NDD). We examined the experiences of service providers as they supported this population during the pandemic. Five focus groups were convened with 24 service providers offering support to children/youth with NDD and their families. Results highlight substantial service changes and challenges, as observed by service providers. Service closures and program delivery modification resulted in the rapid adoption of virtual services and

The present study investigates the development of advanced theory of mind (AToM) among typically developing (TD) children, children with mild intellectual disability (MID), and deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children. The 2-year longitudinal study comprised three waves and included a large sample of children from Poland in middle childhood aged around 7.5-9.5 years (N = 779; M = 7.7, SD = 0.92 at wave 1). The analysis of children's understanding of second-order false belief and the Faux-Pas Recognition Test showed that TD children outperformed children with MID and DHH children on both measures
