One of the weak points in face lifts is their failure to fully correct the ptosis of the labial commissures. This article illustrates a new technique to optimize this commissural repositioning in face lifts by using the muscular balances of the lower half of the face. Horizontal strabismus, the most common type of strabismus, can be complicated by the disorder of inferior oblique muscle or superior oblique muscle. It may cause problems such as compensatory head posture, vertical diplopia, torsional diplopia, and abnormal binocular fusion. In horizontal strabismus cases, the disorder of oblique muscles should be recognized, and appropriate surgical methods should be chosen, so that the best postoperative ortho and binocular vision could be obtained. Traditional examinations of serum are of limited help in diagnosing these diseases and are sometimes misleading. Examinations of pathogen DNA, antibodies and cytokines in the intraocular fluids including aqueous humor and vitreous humor can help clinicians get in situ information and hereby confirm diagnosis rapidly.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2018, 54: 551-556).

Congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles is a rare hereditary strabismus disorder. A case of congenital fibrosis of the inferior rectus muscles with severe chin-up posture and bilateral limitation of up gaze is reported. Bilateral large recessions of the tight inferior rectus muscles provided only partial improvement. Residual head posture and hypotropia were successfully corrected with bilateral horizontal rectus muscle transpositions toward the superior rectus muscles, despite persistently tight inferior rectus muscles at the time of surgery.

We present a 22-year-old male with a subacute course of chin numbness, ophthalmoplegia, headache and left leg numbness in the setting of fever, chills and night sweats. Initial imaging investigations revealed cauda equina enhancement plus an infiltrative process at the basis of the skull associated with extensive bone marrow infiltration and lymphadenopathy elsewhere. We discuss the localization, differential diagnosis, and appropriate investigations for this unique clinical scenario. Important laboratory findings and treatment considerations are reviewed for this unusual final diagnosis.

A 57-year-old woman on leflunomide with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and rheumatoid arthritis presented with multiple flesh-colored to hyperpigmented dome-shaped papules, scattered comedones, and underlying scarring on bilateral cheeks and chin. These dermatologic manifestations, laboratory evaluation, and punch biopsy led to a final diagnosis of acneiform or comedonal discoid lupus erythematosus (ACDLE). For patients with acneiform or comedonal lesions, ACDLE should be considered if the lesions do not improve with conventional treatment for acne vulgaris.

Secondary optic neuropathy of optic nerve abnormalities is the leading cause of persistent visual impairment. Previous ocular neuroprotection studies have proved that the nerve growth factor and other agents are of significant in the preservation of optic nerve axon and retinal ganglion cells. However, finding novel safe and effective approach as well as the appropriate applications of optic neuroprotection should be highly emphasized and would be very helpful in the treatment of optic neuropathy.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 881-884).

This article reviews the anatomy of the lower face in light of approach and techniques for prejowl implant. Implant sizing, patient selection and analysis, technique, and complications are presented. The author cites the manner of aging in the lower face and discusses the concept of augmenting the mandible to re-establish a youthful contour by correcting the prejowl sulcus and chin for rejuvenation. Because the prejowl sulcus and jowling camouflage the jawline, recontouring the mandible with implants restores the smooth jawline to provide optimal result by restoring the oval face shape.

We describe a case of first-trimester diagnosis of micrognathia. A transvaginal ultrasound scan performed at 13 weeks' gestation revealed an abnormal fetal facial profile consisting of a small mandible and a receding chin. A subsequent amniocentesis at 15 weeks' gestation revealed a normal karyotype. A morphology scan and subsequent postmortem examination at 19 weeks confirmed the first-trimester findings and revealed, in addition to the facial pathology, a complex cardiac abnormality and unilateral talipes equinovarus. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of Pierre Robin syndrome.

We report on a patient with deletion 13q33.3-->qter having growth retardation but no severe mental retardation. He was microcephalic and had hypotonia, large, low set ears, depressed nasal bridge, hypertelorism, small chin, high and broad forehead and bilateral simian creases. FISH was carried out using a telomeric probe of chromosome 13. Only one chromosome 13 showed a signal. Whole chromosome 13 probe showed that there was no 13q material on another chromosome. The karyotypes of the parents were normal.

Twelve cases of mental nerve neuropathy observed over a 20-month period are reported. Although benign in appearance, the condition frequently is of somber significance being most often, and sometimes initially, associated with malignant diseases. Cancer, and in particular breast cancer, is the most common cause, but malignant blood diseases may also be responsible. Metastatic lesions of the mandible and/or the mental nerve most probably explain why paresthesia and pain in the chin are relieved by local radiotherapy, combined or not with chemotherapy.

Hypertrophic scars and contractures following 3rd degree burns originate in an excessive production of myofibroblasts from the granulation tissue. Early tangential excision and grafting helps in fighting the multiplication of these cells and hence some later complications. Conservative treatment of the scars is achieved by "Jobst" compressive masking and neck splints. Corrective surgery is accomplished by means of skin grafts or flaps. The authors' own methods are described for reconstructing destroyed organs such as scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, lips, chin, ears and nose.
