Epidemiology of male urethritis in Nigeria.

One thousand and seventy-two symptomatic male cases of urethritis were investigated. Of these, 643 (60%) had gonococcal aetiology; 579 (54%) of all cases were in the 21-30-year age group while only 21 (2%) were above 50 years and 654 patients were married, 418 unmarried. Traders, civil servants and students accounted for 33.8, 29.5 and 26.7% of cases respectively. Sokoto state of Nigeria was less affected with the disease than other areas. Three hundred and eighty-six patients gave a history of previous therapy and only 183 of these yielded gonococci. Seventy-two per cent of gonococcal isolate

HIV antibody testing: who benefits and who loses?

From a public health perspective, a significant milestone in the AIDS crisis so far has been the development of serologic tests to detect exposure to the HIV. With AIDS now reported in more than 124 countries and in every state of the Union, with the possibility that in excess of two million Americans have been infected and in the absence of a cure or vaccine, the issue of testing cannot be ignored anymore. Unfortunately, the testing debate has generated more heat than light. This paper examines the proposed "benefit" to public health in testing certain target groups deemed "at risk", and also

Sexual surgery in late-nineteenth-century America.

This article describes how the tendency of post-Civil War medicine accorded with general social tendencies. Doctors' attitudes toward women reflected their anxiety about female emancipation and changing sex roles. The specialty of gynecology emerged in significant part as a reaction to female emancipation. The strong surgical emphasis in American gynecology practice has continued. The operations, clitoridectomy and female castration, were intended to reimpose the traditional sexual order (the term "castration" and "female circumcision" implied women had become men). The paper goes on to descri

Digital surveillance or objective evidence? Wearable-derived data in insurance and legal medicine: A narrative review and medico-legal perspective.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices increasingly generate longitudinal data on physical activity, sleep, heart rate, falls, and other behavioral or physiological parameters. In insurance and legal medicine, these data may appear attractive as real-world evidence of functional capacity, disability, recovery, rehabilitation adherence, claimant behavior, or legally relevant factual circumstances. Their apparent objectivity, however, raises complex medico-legal questions. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review examines the potential evidentiary value and medico-legal limitations of wearable-derived data in in

Gender differentials in death registration completeness in Gujarat, India: a policy analysis of structural, economic, and socio-cultural barriers.

BACKGROUND: Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems are fundamental to evidence-based governance and public health. In India, a persistent gender disparity exists in death registration: approximately 73% of male deaths are officially recorded compared to only 64% of female deaths nationally (NFHS-5). Gujarat, despite its relatively advanced socio-economic standing and near 93.1% overall death registration rate (CRS 2023), continues to exhibit this troubling gap. OBJECTIVE: This study analyses the structural, economic, and socio-cultural drivers of gender disparities in death re

Structural Optimization of a High-Performance Green Sandwich Made of Sisal Reinforced Epoxy Facings and Balsa Core.

Within the range of composite laminates for structural applications, sandwich laminates are a special category intended for applications characterized by high flexural stresses. As it is well known from the technical literature, structural sandwich laminates have a simple configuration consisting of two skins of very strong material, to which the flexural strength is delegated, between which an inner layer (core) of light material with sufficient shear strength is interposed. As an example, a sandwich configuration widely used in civil, naval, and mechanical engineering is that obtained with f

Mapping a research-advocacy-policy agenda on human rights and albinism: a mixed methods project.

BACKGROUND: Persons with albinism face challenges to their wellbeing, safety, and security, ranging from vision impairment and skin cancer to stigma and discrimination. In some regions, they also face human rights atrocities including mutilation and murder. Research on human rights and albinism is a relatively new field that has gained momentum since the United Nations appointment of an Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism. In this paper, we present the results of a mixed methods study undertaken to identify priorities for research, advocacy, and policy

Trends and Contributing Factors in Medicolegal Cases Involving Spine Surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe closed medicolegal cases involving physicians and spine surgery in Canada from a trend and patient safety perspective. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spine surgery is a source of medicolegal complaints against surgeons partly owing to the potential severity of associated complications. In previous medicolegal studies, researchers applied a medicolegal lens to their analyses without applying a quality improvement or patient safety lens. METHODS: The study comprised a 15-year medicolegal trend analysi

Emergency Supply Policy of Cryopreserved RBC and PLT: The Czech Republic Concept.

Supply of blood for urgent substitution is a strategic logistical problem for the military medical services across the world. The limited shelf life of blood- derived bioproductsin the liquid state and the need for special transport and use conditions, apart from donor and donations availability are among the causes for concern. To solve these problems many national health-care authorities implemented the national emergency blood crisis policy, to get a large amount of blood at any time at any place in the case of disaster, terrorist attack or war. The civil therapeutic problems in immunohemat

An outbreak of relapsing fever unmasked by microbial paleoserology, 16th century, France.

OBJECTIVES: Depicting past epidemics currently relies on DNA-based detection of pathogens, an approach limited to pathogens with well-preserved DNA sequences. We used paleoserology as a complementary approach detecting specific antibodies under a mini line-blot format including positive and negative control antigens. METHODS: Mini line blot assay incorporated skim milk as negative control, Staphylococcus aureus as positive control, and antigens prepared from lice-borne pathogens Rickettsia prowazekii, Borrelia recurrentis, Bartonella quintana, and Yersinia pestis. Paleoserums were extracted f

Influence of health rights discourses and community organizing on equitable access to health: the case of HIV, tuberculosis and cancer in Peru.

BACKGROUND: The right to health is recognized as a fundamental human right. Social participation is implied in the fulfillment of health rights since Alma Ata posited its relevance for successful health programs, although a wide range of interpretations has been observed for this term. While Peruvian law recognizes community and social participation in health, it was the GFATM requirement of mixed public-civil society participation in Country Coordination Mechanisms (CCM) for proposal submission what effectively led to formal community involvement in the national response to HIV and, to a less

Social Capital and Disaster Preparedness of Farmers in Severe Earthquake Areas: The Mediating Role of Risk Perception.

Improving household disaster preparedness is one of the most effective ways to reduce disaster risk. Based on a survey of 327 farmers in the areas worst hit by the Wenchuan and Ya'an earthquakes, this study systematically analyzed the impact of social capital on disaster preparedness, and the specific mechanism of action between the two was further analyzed using the intermediary effect model. The results show that (1) faced with the threat of earthquake disasters, farmers are not sufficiently prepared to avoid disasters, with only about 25% having made preparations. Farmers' social capital ab

A Preparedness Model for Mother-Baby Linked Longitudinal Surveillance for Emerging Threats.

INTRODUCTION: Public health responses often lack the infrastructure to capture the impact of public health emergencies on pregnant women and infants, with limited mechanisms for linking pregnant women with their infants nationally to monitor long-term effects. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in close collaboration with state, local, and territorial health departments, began a 5-year initiative to establish population-based mother-baby linked longitudinal surveillance, the Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Mothers and Babies Network (SET-NET). OBJECTIVES: The
