The development, comparative anatomy, and function of the oropharynx are briefly described. The text book descriptions of the anatomical boundaries of the oropharynx are commented on and an attempt is made to define these boundaries more rigidly and accurately. Although the advantages and limitations of the UICC classification of oropharyngeal cancer is accepted, an alternative classification is suggested based on the function of the site involved rather than its descriptive anatomy. The forward sequential selection and backward sequential rejection algorithms and the optimal branch and bound algorithm were evaluated in selection of features for classification of electrocardiograms of 237 patients with old myocardial infarction and 299 subjects without infarction. A classification of anatomic defects of the rectovaginal septum secondary to obstetric and/or surgical trauma is presented. Five distinct types are described on the basis of the location of the fistula and the associated anatomic alteration. A review of 57 patients based on this classification showed its applicability to preoperative management and surgical technique utilized.

In order to differentiate between the manifold phenomena of haemophilic arthropathy, and to treat them suitably, the author suggests a classification of haemophilic arthropathies. Qualitatively speaking, it is possible to differentiate between 6 forms of bleeders-joint: the virginal, restituted, acute, florid, latent and activated form. Quantitative subdivision is effected according to two criteria: the extent of actual destructive activity of the joint being one criterion of classification, the other one being the extent of permanent damage to the joint.

A simultaneous clinical and histological study in 82 new, untreated leprosy patients was undertaken using the criteria of Ridley and Jopling. The disparity between the clinical and the histological diagnosis was abundantly clear, because in only 35 patients the two conformed with each other while in others there was a shift of one step towards either the tuberculoid or the lepromatous end of the spectrum. In 18 patients from other groups of leprosy, histologic delineation had features of indeterminate leprosy.

A variety of depressive classifications were used to predict response to four weeks' treatment with phenelzine. Better response was found in outpatients rather than inpatients, in atypical depressives, in less severe depressives with a pattern of anxiety and other neurotic symptoms, and in groups characterized as hostile and agitated. The findings, although a little patchy, gave clear support to the concept of a specific clinical group responsive to MAO inhibitors.

Anomolies of the first branchial groove cleft are common and variable. There has been, however, a tendency in the literature to refer to only one or two types as the first branchial cleft syndrome. A classification of first groove anomalies is offered to clarify this topic. Anomalies can be divided into aplasia, atresia, stenosis, and duplication.

We believe the Tessier classification system facilitates the description of complicated facial clefts, and we describe its use in 4 cases--all of whom had variations of a Tessier-3 cleft. Microphthalmia is associated with the Tessier-3 cleft. Computerized axial tomography may be helpful in differentiating an extreme microphthalmia from a true anophthalmia, and in detecting bony clefts not seen on roentgenographic studies. Seventy-one cases of ankle fractures in children were studied. An analysis of the fracture lines involving the distal tibial and fibular epiphyses were done.
