These things take time: what is the role of the hippocampus in recognition memory over extended delays?

In a clever experimental design, Tallman, Clark, and Smith (this issue) tested the changes in fMRI activation and functional connectivity in the hippocampus and cortex as a function of memory age. They found that activation changed according to a power function (both increasing and decreasing) in several cortical regions but not within the hippocampus or medial temporal lobe (MTL). Further, functional connectivity increased with memory age between cortical regions but decreased for the hippocampus. Taken together, these results offer strong support for the standard consolidation model. However

What does the hippocampus do during working-memory tasks? A cognitive-neuropsychological perspective.

In this commentary, we highlight the role of the hippocampus as a binding device that may explain its recruitment during associative working-memory paradigms. Furthermore, we argue that both functional neuroimaging research, as presented in Slotnick (this issue), and carefully designed lesion studies in patients with selective bilateral hippocampal damage are crucial for advancing our understanding of the neural structures and processing involved in human memory in general and disentangling the role of the hippocampus proper and other medial temporal lobe structures in working-memory function

Selective directed forgetting is mediated by the lateral prefrontal cortex: Preliminary evidence with transcranial direct current stimulation.

Recent research has shown that providing a cue to selectively forget one subset of previously learned facts may result in specific forgetting of this information. Behavioral evidence suggests that this selective directed forgetting effect relies on executive control and is a direct consequence of active, rather than passive, mechanisms. To date, however, no previous research has addressed the neural underpinnings of selective directed forgetting. Since the lateral prefrontal cortex is thought to mediate motivated forgetting by exerting top-down control over the brain structures that underpin m

6 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation of mPFC improves sustained attention and modulates alpha phase synchronization and power in dorsal attention network.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation tool appropriate to modulate cortical oscillations and activity via the application of weak currents. The major goal of this study was to investigate the effects of medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) stimulation on sustained attention task performance measured by Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVIP) task and the brain networks assumed to be critical to sustained attention. mPFC has been shown to be involved in sustained attention performance and as a main hub in default mode network (DMN). mPFC activity m

Cognitive demand modulates connectivity patterns of rostral inferior parietal cortex in cognitive control of language.

The inferior parietal cortex (IPC) is involved in different cognitive functions including language. In line with the correlated transmitter receptor-based organization of the IPC, this part of the brain is parcellated into the rostral, the middle and the caudal clusters; however, the tripartite organization of the IPC has not been addressed in studies with a focus on cognitive control of language. Using multiband EPI, in this study we investigated how the rostral IPC contributes to this executive function in bilinguals. In doing so, we focused on the functional connectivity patterns of this pa

Social power and frontal alpha asymmetry.

Recent studies have shown that the states of high and low social power (the ability to control or influence another's thoughts, feelings, or behaviours) are related to left and right frontal hemisphere activity, respectively, suggesting a connection with two neurobiological motivational systems-the Behavioural Activation and Inhibition Systems. However, an important and outstanding question is which state of social power is associated with differences in hemispheric activity. In the current study, we addressed this outstanding issue by examining differences in frontal alpha asymmetry while par

Decoding intransitive actions in primary motor cortex using fMRI: toward a componential theory of 'action primitives' in motor cortex.

Multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) over functional MRI data can distinguish neural representational states that do not differ in their overall amplitude of BOLD contrast. Here we used MVPA to test whether simple intransitive actions can be distinguished in primary motor cortex. Participants rotated and flexed each of their extremities (hands and feet) during fMRI scanning. The primary motor cortex for the hand/wrist was functionally defined in each hemisphere in each subject. Within those subject-specific ROIs, we found that the average amplitude of BOLD contrast for two different movements of

Differential effects of 10-Hz and 40-Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on endogenous versus exogenous attention.

Previous electrophysiological studies implicate both alpha (8-12 Hz) and gamma (>30 Hz) neural oscillations in the mechanisms of selective attention. Here, participants preformed two separate visual attention tasks, one endogenous and one exogenous, while transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), at 10 Hz, 40 Hz, or sham, was applied to the right parietal lobe. Our results provide new evidence for the roles of gamma and alpha oscillations in voluntary versus involuntary shifts of attention. Gamma (40 Hz) stimulation resulted in improved disengagement from invalidly cued targets in t

Processing of configural and componential information in face-selective cortical areas.

We investigated how face-selective cortical areas process configural and componential face information and how race of faces may influence these processes. Participants saw blurred (preserving configural information), scrambled (preserving componential information), and whole faces during fMRI scan, and performed a post-scan face recognition task using blurred or scrambled faces. The fusiform face area (FFA) showed stronger activation to blurred than to scrambled faces, and equivalent responses to blurred and whole faces. The occipital face area (OFA) showed stronger activation to whole than t

Lateral asymmetry in saccadic eye movements during face processing: the role of individual differences in schizotypy.

Healthy individuals with high as compared to low levels of schizotypal personality traits make more first saccades to the left side of faces, suggesting increased right hemisphere (RH) dominance for face processing. Patients with schizophrenia, however, show attenuated or reversed RH dominance for face processing. It is unclear whether the increased RH dominance found in high schizotypes is specific to face processing or whether it is also observable for other stimuli matched in terms of low-level visual properties. We measured gaze to faces and symmetrical fractal patterns and found higher Ma

Implicit awareness in anosognosia: clinical observations, experimental evidence, and theoretical implications.

Unawareness  of deficits caused by brain damage or neurodegeneration, termed anosognosia, has been demonstrated in a number of different neurological conditions. Clinical observation suggests that unawareness paradoxically can be accompanied by signs of understanding or representation of deficit, but not explicitly expressed. Such "implicit awareness," an apparent oxymoron, is implied by or inferred from actions or statements of the person with neurological disorder. In the current paper, we review clinical observations and experimental evidence which suggest the occurrence of implicit awarene

On the contribution of unconscious processes to implicit anosognosia.

Mograbi and Morris present a review of the literature on anosognosia of hemiplegia and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Their review focuses on aspects of implicit anosognosia. The authors' viewpoint is supported by the presentation of a general model on implicit anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease. The notions have important implications for clinical management, in particular, failure of treatment in Alzheimer's patients.

The interaction between implicit and explicit awareness in anosognosia: emergent awareness.

The dissociation between implicit and explicit forms of awareness has been described in various neurological diseases. The way in which these forms of awareness integrate in order to permit the necessary unitary experience of self remains unclear. Here, the hypothesis that a form of emergent awareness (i.e., the emergence of a verbal acknowledgment of deficits as a consequence of attempting to act) may represent a link between implicit and explicit components is proposed for discussion.

Denial, anosodiaphoria, and emotional reactivity in anosognosia.

A central flaw in models of anosognosia is to consider metacognitive awareness and affective regulation and responsiveness as separate functional modular subsystems. This line of reasoning leads to an "either or" conceptualization of the probable causes of implicit awareness in anosognosic patients. Neuroscience research and clinical observations of patients suggest that anosognosia is often associated with a change in the affective status of the individual as well as a change in their explicit verbal descriptions of themselves. Studying anosognosic patients over time and including measures of

More work on lack of awareness and insight in healthy people and psychiatric patients will assist model building.

We comment on the work of Mograbi and Morris and their newly developed Cognitive Awareness Model in terms of metacognition and awareness of disability in health aging, dementia, and psychosis. It is suggested that further research comparing implicit awareness of disability and objective metacognitive processes would be useful for theory development, as well as further understanding cognitive models of insight in the clinical domain.

Health professionals are unaware of anosognosia.

"Implicit awareness" may be inferred from compliance with medical treatment, even when the patient explicitly denies the need for treatment. Such compliance may cause medics and other health professionals to underestimate the frequency of anosognosia and its effects on the lives of patients and carers. We report survey data showing that health professionals do indeed consider anosognosia following stroke to be relatively uncommon and unimportant, in contrast with evidence on its true frequency and impact. Mograbi and Morris' emphasis on the distinction between implicit and explicit awareness m

Similarities and differences between normal urges and the urge to tic.

Abstract Investigations into the neurobiological substrates underlying urge are important for developing better understanding and treatment for impulse-control disorders. We characterize the phenomenon based on normal bodily (interoceptive) urges. Features include the following: a preceding awareness of an uncomfortable bodily sensation, a sense of urgency that action must be taken, rising distress when action is delayed, a temporary (e.g., a few minutes in length) ability to suppress or manifest the action voluntarily, subsequent relief once action is taken, association with an action that is

Resolving confusions about urges and intentions.

In our article we considered the nature and the functional anatomy of "urges-for-action," both in the context of everyday behaviors such as yawning, swallowing, and micturition, and in relation to clinical disorders in which the urge-for-action is considered pathological (e.g., Tourette syndrome), and we argued for a key role for the insular and cingulate cortices in experiencing the urge-for-action. Here we seek to address some of the key points raised within several of the interesting commentaries on, and challenges to, our paper.

The urge for self and species preservation.

Besides sneezing, yawning, and scratching, other types of more complex behaviors can be considered urges for action, in that they are both compelling and can be overtly inhibited. Many behaviors increasing the survival rate of self and species have this instinctual (although not compulsory) nature. We feel a terrible urge to catch a newborn falling from a table, although we could choose not to do so. The hypothesis is advanced that both insula and cingulate cortex participate in social behaviors such as contagious yawning, laughing, and crying, but are not necessarily involved in the urge to c

How neuroscience will change our view on consciousness.

Is there consciousness in machines? Or in animals? What happens to consciousness when we are asleep, or in vegetative state? These are just a few examples of the many questions about consciousness that are troubling scientists and laypersons alike. Moreover, these questions share a striking feature: They seem to have been around forever, yet neither science nor philosophy has been able to provide an answer. Why is that? In my view, the main reason is that the study of consciousness is dominated by what we know from introspection and behavior. This has fooled us into thinking that we know what
