Intestinal coinfection with Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Cryptosporidium in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected child with chronic diarrhea.

The microsporidian Enterocytozoon bieneusi has been recognized as an important cause of chronic diarrhea in severely immunodeficient adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We report the first case of intestinal E. bieneusi infection in a child. The 9-year-old boy with connatal HIV infection presented with failure to thrive, chronic diarrhea, and intermittent abdominal pain. His CD4 lymphocyte count was 0.05 x 10(9)/L and dropped to 0.01 x 10(9)/L. No HIV-associated opportunistic infection other than oral hairy leukoplakia and oral candidiasis had been found before microsporid

Clinical and Laboratory Profile of Patients with Tropical Coinfections Admitted at a Tertiary Care Center in North India.

BACKGROUND: Tropical coinfections (CI) are the simultaneous occurrence of two or more vector-borne diseases in a single host. The prevalence of such illnesses is not uncommon among tropical and subtropical regions such as India; however, these CIs have not been systematically studied prospectively. Mixed infections can prove potentially detrimental if underdiagnosed or undertreated. We undertook this study to estimate the prevalence and compare the clinical profile, laboratory characteristics, and various outcomes among the patients with tropical CI who presented with acute undifferentiated fe…

Coinfection of Gynura bicolor with a New Strain of Vanilla Distortion Mosaic Virus and a Novel Maculavirus in China.

In recent years, symptoms suggestive of viral infection have commonly occurred in Gynura bicolor in China. However, no viral genome infecting G. bicolor has been reported. This study applied high-throughput sequencing to plant samples with chlorotic spots in Sanya, Hainan. Viral sequences were confirmed using RT-PCR and RACE. Complete genomes of vanilla distortion mosaic virus (VDMV, Potyvirus vanillae) and an unknown virus were obtained. Sequence analysis indicated that the VDMV isolate from the G. bicolor is a novel variant. It shares 81.13% identity with its closest known strain. The unknow

Serum amyloid A concentration in naturally infected cats with Hepatozoon felis alone or coinfected with other pathogens.

Feline hepatozoonosis, caused by Hepatozoon felis and occasionally other Hepatozoon species, is a vector-borne disease transmitted through the ingestion of infected arthropods, primarily ticks. This study investigates serum amyloid A, a major acute-phase protein, in cats naturally infected with H. felis or co-infected with other vector-borne pathogens. A total of 41 asymptomatic, infected cats were categorized into single or co-infection groups, alongside 12 healthy controls. Serum amyloid A levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and analyzed statistically. Results showed
