In this study, we investigated individual traits that influence the frequency of involuntary musical imagery (INMI) and the emotional valence of these occurrences using the experience sampling method (ESM) that measures INMI in daily life at the moment they occur. As individual traits, the effects of non-clinical obsessive-compulsive (OC) tendencies, personality traits, and musical expertise were examined. Among them, we were particularly interested in the effect of OC tendencies that are assumed to be related to INMI but are yet to be fully examined using ESM. A total of 101 university studen

IntroductionCapgras syndrome (CS) is characterized by the delusional belief that a person, usually a close relative, has been replaced by an imposter. This study focuses on the co-occurrence of CS and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in children.MethodsWe present two cases of children diagnosed with CS and OCD treated at our inpatient child psychiatric unit.Cases presentationWe describe the cases of an 11-year-old male who believed his parents were demonic entities and a 12-year-old female who believed her parents were robots. Both children exhibited additional psychiatric manifestations su

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a tremendous psychiatric illness with a variety of severe symptoms. Feelings of shame and guilt are universal social emotions that fundamentally shape the way people interact with each other. Mental illness is therefore often related to pronounced feelings of shame and guilt in a maladaptive form.
METHODS: A total of 62 participants (38 women and 24 men) were clinically and psychometrically investigated.
RESULTS: The OCD patients (n = 31) showed a maladaptive guilt and shame profile, characterized by increased interpersonal feelings of gui

Cognitive theory, postulates that dysfunctional cognitions play a maintaining or even aetiological role in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In this study it was hypothesised that if distorted cognitions play a central role in OCD, there should be a relation between cognitive measures and the severity of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a childhood OCD sample. A group of 39 children and adolescents with a primary diagnosis OCD was measured on the CY-BOCS, and on the cognitive questionnaires the MTQ, and the CATS. The findings suggest no relation between the severity of the OCD and magic

Psychotherapies are first-line treatments for most mental disorders, but their absolute outcomes (i.e., response and remission rates) are not well studied, despite the relevance of such information for health care users, providers and policy makers. We aimed to examine absolute and relative outcomes of psychotherapies across eight mental disorders: major depressive disorder (MDD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and borderline personality disorder (BPD). We

BACKGROUND: There is little research describing the clinical use of a ketogenic diet in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or inflammatory bowel disease. We describe the first clinical application of a ketogenic diet in adult OCD with ulcerative colitis (UC) resulting in complete remission of OCD, clinical remission of UC, and improved metabolic health.
METHODS: A 37-year-old obese woman with longstanding OCD and ulcerative colitis was treated for 12 weeks with a personalized whole-food ketogenic diet (KMT 1:5:1 ratio) in a specialized metabolic psychiatry clinic. Adherence was assessed by c

Background and Objectives: Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating, compulsive buying, and other related behaviors are well-known distinct non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Some large-scale studies present a prevalence of at least 10%, however, there are other reports providing much higher rates. The majority of the conducted studies investigating ICDs focus mainly on pharmacological factors, however, from a psychological perspective, there is yet enough room for investigation. In order to address the above issues, we de

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in patients being followed for schizophrenia and their first-degree relatives (mother, father, siblings, and children) and the relationship between OCS and clinical/subclinical psychotic symptoms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 110 schizophrenia patients followed up in a community mental health center and their first-degree relatives. Patients and relatives were evaluated using the SCID-I (Structured Clinical Interview Form for DSM-IV Axis-I Disorders) to ascertain their diagnosis and exc

BACKGROUND: The first 2 years of life are a particularly sensitive period for the parent-child relationship as well as a healthy, age-appropriate child development. Both have been shown to be linked to postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms, while the role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, which are also common, is still largely understudied. In addition, fathers have been neglected in this area of research. This study, which includes both mothers and fathers, aims to investigate the longitudinal associations between postpartum obsessive-compulsive symptoms and different domains of child d

BACKGROUND: Intensive Outpatient Program Exposure and Response Prevention (IOP EX/RP) is a highly effective intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), especially for those with greater support needs than outpatient therapy but less than residential treatment. However, patients exhibit heterogeneity in their treatment response to IOP EX/RP. This study aimed to characterize distinct patterns of obsessive-compulsive symptom change during IOP EX/RP and to identify clinical predictors of trajectory membership.
METHODS: We explored weekly obsessive-compulsive symptom trajectories among 5

In the present study, 43 obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients receiving cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT)/exposure and response prevention (ERP) in an intensive residential treatment program responded to an open-ended question about causal attributions (i.e., personal explanations for the etiology of their OCD) at baseline and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) at baseline and treatment discharge. Baseline self-reported responses about causal attributions were qualitatively coded to derive predictors (biological/genetic, environmental, psychological, and interactional at

Our study aims to assess the prevalence of behavioural addictions in an adolescent population, evaluating the effects of gender and age, and to assess the correlations among different behavioural addictions. 2853 high school students were assessed in order to evaluate the prevalence of behavioural addictions such as Pathological Gambling (PG), Compulsive Buying (CB), Exercise Addiction (EA), Internet Addiction (IA), and Work Addiction (WA), in a population of Italian adolescents. The South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised Adolescent (SOGS-RA), the Compulsive Buying Scale (CBS), the Exercise Addict

BACKGROUND: Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) seem to offer comparable results to the traditional hospitalization model, at a lower cost and offering greater flexibility and scope. However, in Madrid, its implementation in Mental Health did not occur until the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this work we analysed the effectiveness of a mental health CRHT unit promoted during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the degree of satisfaction of patients and their families.
METHODS: 90 patients were treated by the CRHT unit in the period between October 2020 and June 2022. All patients met t

Because eating disorders (EDs) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) co-occur at high rates and can have functionally similar clinical presentations, it has been suggested that both constructs might be part of a common spectrum of disorders. Identifying the relationship between EDs and OCD may lead to the discovery of important shared core disease processes and/or mechanisms for maintenance. The objective of this paper is to understand the relationship between EDs and OCD by systematically reviewing epidemiological, longitudinal and family studies guided by five models of comorbidity posited

1. To distinguish GAD from panic disorder is not difficult if a patient has frequent, spontaneous panic attacks and agoraphobic symptoms, but many patients with GAD have occasional anxiety attacks or panic attacks. Such patients should be considered as having GAD. An even closer overlap probably exists between GAD and social phobia. Patients with clear-cut phobic avoidant behavior may be distinguished easily from patients with GAD, but patients with social anxiety without clear-cut phobic avoidant behavior may overlap with patients with GAD and possibly should be diagnosed as having GAD and no

Tourette syndrome (TS) is often accompanied by other symptoms and syndromes. The two best-known co-morbidities are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but also other conditions like rage-attacks, depression, and sleeping disturbances are frequent in persons with TS. Both in clinical cohorts and in population-based cohorts the prevalence of co-morbidities is high. The presence of co-morbid ADHD and/or OCD has an impact on psychosocial, educational, and neuropsychological consequences of TS and it is associated with higher rates of other co-mo

The disorders classified as control of the impulses; explosive intermittent disorder, pathological gambling, kleptomania, pyromania, pathological gambling, hair pullers, compulsive purchases, skin picking and onychophagia are a heterogeneous set of clinical entities, most of them with little prevalence. Nevertheless, they cause important personal and social dysfunctions and present great comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. Antipsychotics, antidepressive agents, serotoninergic agonists, naltrexone, beta blockers antiandrogen, lithium and anticonvulsants have been used in their pharmac

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is an original cognitive approach developed in Canada that provides an effective alternative for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is better tolerated than Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the core CBT technique and gold-standard treatment for OCD. I-CBT targets inferential confusion, a central concept in which the person places more trust in imagined possibilities than in directly observable reality. I-CBT aims to deconstruct this confusion. Key therapeutic steps help the patient step out of the story created by OCD an
